Some booking photos just make you feel good:

The officers located Birtz, who was not cooperative, and when they tried to pat him down to look for the knife, he became irate and started fighting them, the sergeant said.

“He began to flail and fight with the officers,” Edwards said. “Birtz was trying to punch and swing at the officers” and after a scuffle “they finally got him to the ground.”

Lincoln County News Waldoboro

Lincoln County News

Waldoboro Police Officer Jeremy Joslyn was commended Feb. 26 for his efforts to save the life of a man during the Feb. 9 blizzard.

"On this date a citizen walked into the woods on Winslow Mills Rd. during blizzard like conditions," Labombarde read. "He had not been seen or heard from since. Upon being thoroughly briefed, you arrived on scene, entered the woods on snow shoes, and followed his tracks through the woods for over two (2) hours in a tireless attempt to rescue the citizen from the elements"

Officer Joslyn had to be ordered off the search! He would have stayed out there all night had he not been told to stop.

Arrrggg! I agree with a Bill Nemitz column! The end must be near!

Bill Nemitz: Suspect owes her life to Saco officers' restraint

Even I, in this case, would have a hard time critizing the use of deadly force, and the officers took mortal risks in this situtation.

What I find hopeful is the mentality that even dangerous confrontation does not have to be met by a hail of bullets. Aside from the particular circumstances of any confrontation, that is what I hope will be changing.

Great story and he made an important distinction: legally justified vs absolutely necessary.

Of course, he couldn't help but take a jab at Zimmerman. Stripes unchanged.

Nick Ague, a police officer

Nick Ague, a police officer in Pennsylvania, went above and beyond the call of duty while responding to a car accident report.

... So he lifted the 75-pound dog and carried her 100 yards to safety. A photo on the police department's Facebook page earned him kudos from fellow dog lovers.

Rockland police disarm man

Rockland police disarm man downtown with gun who sought suicide by cop

Great job - smart, quick-thinking and aware.

Here's a thought. When I looked over the story quickly, I thought one of the police officers was a woman - and the thought popped into my head - " a woman cop didn't just start blasting away? That doesn't make sense." Then I looked again and saw all the officers are male, and my instinctive response was: "Well, now THAT makes more sense."

Then I caught myself - why would I believe that a woman cop was incapable of subduing a suspect without shooting him?
