"LIMA (Reuters) - As wheat and rice prices surge, the humble potato -- long derided as a boring tuber prone to making you fat -- is being rediscovered as a nutritious crop that could cheaply feed an increasingly hungry world."

"To focus attention on this, the United Nations named 2008 the International Year of the Potato, calling the vegetable a "hidden treasure".

Maybe Maine can Cash IN on this.

Not this year EJ..my friends report still 4-6 feet of snow on the fields and slow melting..usualy the spuds are being planted over the next few weeks. If the weather does not dramtically change there will be no way to get the potatoes in the ground in time - there's either too much snow or will just be too muddy causing them to rot and not grow.

Look for many potato farmers to turn to corn this year due to the situation.

That is not fun.

I had the chance to go pick rocks one weekend up in the county while in college. Once is enough.

My farmer friends, used to kid that they always wondered how come so many more rocks would show up year after year.

It could be an economic catastrophy for the county this year, I only hope that government officials keep an eye on the situation and assist where neccesary.
