I see Reisman withdrew in Senate district 29. Any talk on who is going to run for Raye's seat?
I found an answer to my own question . . .
Washington County GOP lawmaker eyes Senate seat in 2012
Rep. David Burns, R-Whiting, has announced his candidacy for . . . District 29 . . . in the Maine Senate, a district that encompasses all of Washington County and small portions of Hancock and Penobscot counties.
The seat currently is held by Senate President Kevin Raye of Perry, who is term-limited and has announced plans to run against Mike Michaud for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Burns is in his second term in the Maine House. . . .

Brian Duprey has withdrawn from the Senate 33 race, paving the way for Andre Cushing in the GOP Primary and will run instead for the seat vacated by Cushing in House 39 which is the seat he held prior to Cushing.
From the Quick Candidate List with 2012 candidates checked, or from the the Advanced Candidate List with 2012 candidates selected and the "Filing Status" box checked, I see two more withdrawals, both in districts coving part or all of Saco. State Rep. George Hogan (D-Old Orchard Beach) has withdrawn from the Senate District 5 race (so the two remaining candidates right now are both State Representatives from Saco), and Roger Gay (D-Saco) has withdrawn from the House District 134 race, perhaps yeilding to Mr. "Youth in Politics" Justin Chenette.
Just an update on the special election for Senate District #20.
Dana Dow (HD 50) has also been a candidate seeking to replace Trahan. He and Les Fossel (HD 53) were in a caucus contest held tonight by the Lincoln County GOP. Mr. Dow won and now squares off against the Democrat candidate in the Feb 14 special election.
Mr. Fossel will continue to serve from HD 53.
I'm getting ready to run for HD 50. It may be a contested primary, I spoke with a lady tonight that expressed interest in running as well. More on that as it developes.

Termed-out State Senator Nancy Sullivan (D-York County (Biddeford)) is the first current State Senator to register to run for the State House this election cycle. If she wins and goes on to win reeelection in 2014, she would become (possibly along with John Martin and perhaps others) the first person to serve more than 8 consecutive terms in the Maine Legislature since Beverly Daggett became the first Maine Legislator to be termed out a second time in 2004 (Daggett had served a partial term and four full terms in the House before becoming part of the first group of Maine Legislators to be termed out in 1996 and running successfully for the State Senate). The current Represenatative for House District 137, Alan Cassavant (D-Biddeford), is only in his third term, but he might not have been planning to run for reelection anyway now that he is the Mayor of Biddeford.
Henry,
Do you know if it's clear that there will or won't be a special election in House District 50 if Dow wins on February 14 and resigns from the House shortly thereafter to take his Senate seat? From an article I read somewhere late last year it seemed to be taken for granted that there wouldn't be, but I'm not sure. I know there have been special elections where vacancies arose in January of an even year (as the one in Senate District 20 did, arguably, but I mean when someone died in January like Senator Joel Abromson in 2002, rather than a vacancy that had been anticipated), but I'm not sure about February. If anyone else is knows what would happen they can certainly respond also.
Update: I was reminded this afternoon that the Maine Constitution gives more descretion on if and when House vacancies are filled ("Whenever the seat of a member shall be vacated by death, resignation, or otherwise the vacancy may be filled by a new election." (emphasis mine)) than it does for Senate vacancies ("All vacancies in the Senate arising from death, resignation, removal from the State or like causes, and also vacancies, if any, which may occur because of the failure of any district to elect by a plurality of votes the Senator to which said district shall be entitled shall be filled by an immediate election in the unrepresented district."). With that information, and since I imagine Dow won't resign from the House before the special election takes place in mid-February, it seems pretty clear that there won't be a special election for the House District 50 seat this year, at least not as a direct result of Dow being elected to the Senate.
Mike, Kevin and others -
Great thread. Thank you for your work on this.
Best,
skf
Just something I'm throwing out there: There are several Maine house/senate seats that I think Republicans do not have any shot of winning, barring some situation like the New Orleans Democratic Rep. found with illicit cash in his freezer. These seats include highly urban ones in places like Portland and Lewiston: House 118, 119, 120, 72 and 73 and Senate 8 (http://www.maine.gov/sos/cec/elec/apport/house%20maps.htm). What are people's thoughts on Republicans running as Independents in those areas?
For example: In 2010, House District 118 went 68% - 13% for the Democrat, while Senate District 8 went 75% - 20% for the Democrat. In the former the GOP candidate was beaten by the Green Party (http://www.maine.gov/sos/cec/elec/2010/staterep2010.html).
Your suggestion seems based on a theory that people will vote for someone with the same principals if only there is a different label. I don't buy it. The Democrats will also not ignore what is going on.
Independents rarely win legislative races. In the last 30 years, only 5 people have been elected as Independents who were not previously elected as members of a party.
John Ring is an interesting GOP candidate for House District 29. He's a former Pittsfield mayor who ran against Stacey Fitts as a Democrat a few years ago.
As noted in one of the updated lists, above.
*************
The return of the Double-Dipping Legislator.
She's running against Alan Casavant, D-Biddeford, House Rep. for District 137, which is Biddeford and part of Kennebunkport.
http://www.maine.gov/legis/house/hsebios/casaam.htm
Is Sullivan going to be retired from teaching at Saco schools, and giving up that double-dip paycheck, at long last?
______________
Also - Ed Legg (D) is running again for House 141, after being trounced by Paul Bennett, R-Kennebunk two years ago. Somehow, I don't think Ed will have a "Legg" to stand on, based on Bennett's performance and hard work in Augusta.
Many thanks to Mike, Kevin, and everyone else contributing so much time and effort to this thread.
Knox Village Soup: Former senator wanted to see prison investigation completed
Augusta — David Trahan, who resigned Dec. 31 as a state senator, said he stayed in the Legislature as long as he could to protect people that reported possible criminal activities at the Maine State Prison. He wanted to be their advocate, and see the completion of an investigation into allegations of harassment and retaliation.
I am a bad Dem. I voted for all Lepage and Scontras in the last election because I liked wht that had to say and offered to do. I still think they are doing great for our State. Being a City Councilor over the last almost 5 years (presently serving my third term) in Biddeford. I am considering an Indy bid for House District 136 again. I ran in the Democratic Primary in 2010 for the seat and lost by 66 votes. Many people have been asking me to run again.
Obviously, I am way too conservative for the Dems and I "suppose" too liberal (not really) by the Republicans. I am open to your thoughts on an Indy bid. Cutler's www.OneMaine.org seems to be gathering steam.

Senate District 19 candidate Jeffrey Pierce is a Republican, according to the Ethics Commission's Public Campaign Finance Page.
Is Senate District 4 candidate David Dutremble (D-Biddeford), who is apparently running against State Representative Stephen Beaudette in the Democratic Primary, any relation to former State Senate President and 1994 ME-01 Democratic nominee Dennis "Duke" Dutremble and former State Representative Lucien "Babe" Dutremble (Duke's father IIRC)? Can anyone handicap that primary or venture a guess as to how it turns out? Are any other Democrats (like recent Biddeford Mayor, former State Representative Joanne Twomey, who unsuccessfully challenged the now termed out incumbent in 2006, or former Biddeford Mayor and State Senate candidate and quixotic 2010 Gubernatorial candidate Donna Dion) rumored to be running? Any word on who the Republicans might put up?
Senate 18 - Thomas Saviello (Democratic) - MCEA DOI
When did he switch parties?
Mike L.
No that was a typo as was the Senate 19 listing - I have corrected them.
Thanks,
MB
Biddeford Democrats will be taking on Biddeford Democrats in at least two legislative races during the June 2012 Primary.
In District 136, Perennial candidate and current city councilor Bob Mills will be challenging incumbent State Rep. Megan Rochelo;
In District 137, Newly eelected mayor Alan Casavant will be fending off a challenge for his House Seat by State Sen. Nancy Sullivan, who is facing term limits.
So far, no Republicans have joined the fray, however, Perry Aberle, a former city councilor, may run as a Republican against incumbent Paulette Beaudoin in District 135.
Deleted....duplicate info
"In District 136, Perennial candidate and current city councilor Bob Mills will be challenging incumbent State Rep. Megan Rochelo;"
Perennial Candidate? First time I have been called that by a "anonymous blogger". For the record: I have been elected to the City Council three times (2007, 2009, and 2011) and elected to the City Charter Commission (2005).
Before being on the council I ran for County Commissioner in 2006 ( garnering 15% of the vote as an Indy). In 2008, I challenged the incumbent York County Register of Probate (garnering 46,000 York County votes or 46% votes). In 2010, I ran in the Democratic Primary against Meagan losing by a mere 66 votes (garnered 44% of the vote).
Of course and naturally, I would challenge her again. Especially when my supporters overwhelming have asked me to run again for the seat.

I've finally finished my update, unless I notice some mistakes later.
Termed-out Senator Deb Plowman just showed up on the grid as running for House District 39. Looks like Brian Duprey isn't getting a free ride to the GOP nomination after all.
Rod Hathaway from Veazie has his papers out to run for Senate District 30 as a republican candidate. Emily Cain has her papers out too (as indicated above) if anyone wants to help Rod let me know.
What does DOI stand for?
It stands for "Declaration of Intent", meaning that the candidate has filed a "Declaration of Intent ..." (I forget the title of the form, but basically a declaration of his or her intent to run as a Maine Clean Elections Act candidate) but has not yet qualified for MCEA funding (those candidates are listed as "MCEA"). Mike Beardsley had used "MCEA DOI" instead of just "DOI", but now that candidates have begun to qualify for MCEA funding I figured I'd use the same "DOI" designation the Maine Commission of Governmental Ethics and Election Practices uses in it's candidate lists as "MCEA" stands out better from "DOI" than from "MCEA DOI".
List of candidates who are either shown as of the weekend of February 11-12, 2012 as having registered with the Maine Commission of Governmental Ethics and Election Practices, or who have filed nominating petitions with the Office of the Secretary of State as of 4:00 (presumably p.m.) Thursday, February 9, 2012 - new additions and financing statuses since my last update in bold, withdrawals in italics, and SOS-filed candidates underlined:

*Incumbent Democratic York County Judge of Probate candidate Donna Bailey listed as having filed a Declaration of Intent to run as a Maine Clean Election Act candidate, but that act does not cover elections for county offices (and never has), so, in effect, she’ll be privately financed. More accurately, it seems, she won’t be financed at all, as she is listed as being “Exempt” from campaign finance reporting requirements, which I believe means she has pledged not to raise or spend any money on her campaign. Republican Knox County Commissioner District 2 candidate Richard Parent is also listed as “Exempt”, although he, unlike Bailey, is listed as being privately financed.

Raye is termed out. He has formed an exploratory committee for a potential run against Michaud in 2012.
