MACHIAS - About 25 handguns are missing from the evidence room at the Washington County Sheriff's Department and it looks as if it may be an inside job.

The Attorney General's Office has been notified and an investigator is expected to be in Machias the first week in May.

Two of the weapons that had been in the evidence room can be traced to one person, Sheriff Donnie Smith said Wednesday. He did not elaborate.

Calvin, you beat me to it. Though, it can't very well be Jeff Bishop, since he no longer works there.

What's going on Dale?
It's embarrassing to say the least. Of course if the courts would allow proper identification of evidence those guns could have been returned to the proper owners if the were originally stolen property. Guns used in a crime of course would be different.

MACHIAS - The inventory is complete and the news is appalling. Seventy firearms — 45 more than originally reported last week — are missing from the evidence locker at the Washington County Sheriff’s Department.

Of those, at least 25 are handguns.

"That’s ridiculous," former Sheriff Joseph Tibbetts, who is now a state representative, said Monday when he learned that 70 guns were missing.

The same old story! The nanny state fails us yet again. These are the people that the liberals and anti gunners rely on to protect us in times of need. Does anyone wonder about our esteemed law enforcement whenever certain news video shows many police standing about with smiles when a serious incident goes down. I have oftened wondered why so many and why are they not doing something productive at that time.

Oh, but I forget this is a blue nanny state and the majority of the voters want it kept that way. How friggen sad!

They want us to lock up our guns and create gun free zones and they can't even keep track of guns in the sheriffs office. The Keystone Cops did a better job than this and that is what the people of Washington County ought to change the name to. The Washington County Keystone Cops!!! Ha, Ha, Ha!

The former sheriff says it's a paper-trail problem. Evidently the AG has their doubts.
The former sheriff said he was certain that it’s a "paper error" problem. "There are no 70 firearms [missing]; that’s completely, utterly ridiculous," he said.
How can these cops be expected to protect the property of we the people, when they cannot even protect their own property from their own people?

Too bad that the Tardy amendment failed in the last legislature. If you remember; Josh Tardy proposed an amendment to a domestic violence bill requiring that law enforcement officers take proper care of firearms confiscated due to court restraining orders.

From what I've heard, these were just guns that were either returned or destroyed, and somebody didn't bother to file the proper paperwork explaining their disposal. Paper pushers fail to push?
