Smear Campaign? Not Hardly
Submitted by Al Diamon on Fri, 03/16/2012 - 12:52pm.
The Maine Wire..., is apparently unfamiliar with standard journalistic practice. The Wire seems to think it’s unethical for reporters to thoroughly investigate rumors they hear or tips they receive. Which is odd, because that’s where a significant percentage of all news comes from.
Earlier this week, the Maine Wire posted a scathing attack on the Portland Press Herald and reporter David Hench for inquiring about...gossip that...Gov...LePage had been arrested for drunk driving....

Never forget that, at heart, Al's a leftie. Every now and then it pops right into the open; otherwise he keeps it in check fairly well.
Besides having no problem with publishing unfounded rumors about Lepage, the PPH is certainly noted for its lack of interest in doing any kind of investigative reporting on the Dems.
I have no problem with reporting this as long as they give the whole story and treat liberal, moderate and conservatives the same, which of couse we know they don't come any where close.
Yeah, but are they gonna investigate the rumors about baby snatching by one of the D house candidates?
Wow, taking journalistic integrity tips from the king of rumor mongering and half truths who has been fired from every paper in Maine??
that's like me giving dieting advice...
Well????
I can't wait for details on that alleged baby-snatching, Mel. Should be good.
:)
Al is no lefty. He's a libertarian/libertine with a healthy skepticism of all government operations and his modus operandi is skeptical satire directed at all politicians. In this, and his hostility to "the religious right," he is completely consistent.
Ditto. And being fired by every newspaper in Maine is not really a bad reference. Sorta like being run out of the Communist Party - repeatedly.
Now I'd like to hear some dieting advice from Stavros. Even knowing what NOT to do would be useful from a brain as big as his:-)
I would make the same observation about Diamon... He's equal opportunity when it comes to politicians. Left, Right, Middle, they're all fair game.
I'd be curious to think who he does think has done a good job in the past 4 decades?
Anyone who lives where it snows 10 months a year and has a residence in a beer keg can't be all bad. It takes a certain twisted view of Maine media and politics to write as he does. It is obvious that the media is prejudice and will only investigate those who they distain and look the other way regarding the sins of those they protect.

I would argue that Diamon is correct from the standpoint that a responsible media outlet would investigate the yarn.
I would disagree with him insofar as a responsible media outlet wouldn't publish such a story without verifying facts - or making it clear that the story was a dry hole. In the case of the latter, a responsible media outlet would report how and why the story came to its attention in the first place.
