Abu Musab al-Zarqawi Killed in U.S. Air Strike
By PATRICK QUINN, AP

BAGHDAD, Iraq (June 8) - Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, al-Qaida's leader in Iraq who led a bloody campaign of suicide bombings and kidnappings, has been killed in an air strike, U.S. and Iraqi officials said Thursday, adding his identity was confirmed by fingerprints and a first-hand look at his face. It was a major victory in the U.S.-led war in Iraq and the broader war on terror.

This is excellent news, but, will this be the turning point in Iraq, or will someone as bad or worse arise from the ashes? We can but hope this is the turning point.

I expect that short term, things will get worse. There WILL be reaction, both as an attempt to prove that Zarqawi's death had no effect and as an attempt at revenge.

However, I also expect that this will be comparatively short-lived. Terrorist strikes will continue but I expect they will start to diminish in frequency and effectiveness in fairly short order, and will continue to decline thereafter. I doubt Iraq will be free of terror strikes for some time now, but they will become less of a problem.

Predicting the course of this occupation is like watching somebody heard butterflies.

The left views this like winning the lottery, and worrying about the tax implications instead of enjoying the new found wealth.

I am not so sure about that. They killed a lot of other barbarians in the same strike. Al-Zakawi also controlled the money and communications systems. I expect the random terror to be limited to Iranian supported sectarian violence for a while till al Qaeda gets its act together again,if they can. The iraqi intel folk are getting pretty good making new terror networks much more chancy,

WLOB @ 8:41 a.m. - Fox TV reporter tells Ray/Ted that two 500-lb bombs were dropped on the safe house (ha!) holding Zarqawi.

Man, reading the thread at DU was certainly amusing. reading it, I certainly got a clear picture that the members there are not happy with this news. I could even come to the conclusion that the only thing which would make them happy was for the insurgents to win in Iraq, and for the Bad ol' President to be the one who was killed.

Yes, Democrats and so-called Liberals everywhere, even in Lewiston, are in mourning... their hero, a true Bush-hater, is gone.

I am already loving the video of Iraqi policemen dancing in the streets. Hopefully, that image will replace the one I have in my head of the Palestinians dancing on 9/11.

As noted on the Beck show, the Palestinians were dancing in the street to celebrate the murder of 3000 people. We're happy to see the death of a mass-murderer.

Yup. Happy to implant the memory of the missle hitting that building as a replacement image!
