School officials across the state are hoisting flags and tacking up copies of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights to meet requirements of a new law going into effect on Sunday.

Every public classroom in every school, from Grade 7 up to the college and university level, must display an American-made American flag along with the documents.

This is indeed wonderful news. I wish every state had such a requirement.

I know I'm going to get heat for this opinion, but what about making the requirement a little more context oriented? For example in every social studies, or government classroom or classrooms where the documents might actually pertain to the subject content? Why post them in industrial arts classes or art rooms or music rooms?

This mandate will cost money, you know.

I wonder if it applies to home schoolers and private schools. That could be interesting.

You won't get heat from me. There's no reason that Maine couldn't adapt the program to be more cost-effective, yet get those documents into classrooms where they would be read.

I do agree that every classroom should have a flag, however.

If I had my choice, I would cast the 10th amendment into an 8-lb brass plaque and hang it around the neck of every federal official by a chain of such length that the plaque would strike them in the privates every time they walked.

Isn't that a bit harsh? Could be a deterrent to pursuing a life in public service.

Let's leave that for the parochial schools, OK?

Hmmm... No Declaration of Independence?

I love the idea of flags, The Constitution, and The Bill of Rights being in every classroom applicable. Should have been done long ago imho... But...

Wow... Truly, you feel as though state governments should MANDATE such a thing...??? Were you reading the bible while attending your American Government 101 course, cause it appears you may have missed something...?

Is there a pool yet on when the teachers' unions, backed by the ACLU, will contest this law?
