Big Power Outage in Bangor Area

WVOM reporting major power outages. Cause not determined at 8:47 pm. Based on call-ins the outages seem to be limited to Bangor Hydro customers.

Bangor Hydro spokeswoman Susan Faloon on WVOM at 8:54 a.m. today said: Nearly all Bangor Hydro customers in the dark. Expect all customers back up by noon. The "logical cause" seems to be a lightning strike. There is no service out of Bangor Hydro's Orrington substation.

Back up in this section of the Occupied Salmon Territories as well. Here's something from the Governor's office:

The following news from Maine.gov has been released:

Governor Urges Calm as Bangor Hydro Works to Restore Power
Agency: Governor's Office

July 24th, 2008

AUGUSTA According to the Maine Public Utilities Commission, the Bangor Hydro Electric Company’s entire electricity delivery system is currently down.

The black-out began at approximately 7:50 a.m. The PUC reports that the company estimates that service will be restored in about two hours.

The outage affects the whole Bangor Hydro service area with the exception of a small section of Eastport that is running off a small generator.

“The first priority is to get power restored,” Governor Baldacci said. “Once electricity service is repaired, we can begin to investigate what happened.”

“The most important thing right now is for folks to remain calm. This is a large outage, but it’s expected to only last a couple of hours. Emergency personnel are standing by to assist people who need help, and the Maine Emergency Management Agency is monitoring the situation,” Governor Baldacci said. “Everyone should stay calm as Bangor Hydro works to quickly repair this problem.”

The ENTIRE system went down? Wow! Maybe that explains the lack of a BDN website this morning?

Gee - in addition to his recommendations for "calm," did he manage to work in the exhortations about "Yankee Spirit"?

It was aiming for the Blaine House, but the operation was a miss.

Three serious thunderstorms went through last night, but it was just a light rain when the power went kaput this morning. We had only momentary outages before that.

More than 118,000 without power in eastern Maine

By Associated Press
July 24, 2008 8:48 AM

BANGOR, Maine — Most of eastern Maine was left in the dark Thursday after Bangor Hydro Electric's system went down from a suspected lightning strike as strong thunderstorms rumbled across the state.

More than 118,000 customers lost their electricity shortly before 8 a.m.... Bangor Hydro's service area covers Penobscot County, most of Hancock and Washington counties and part of Piscataquis County.

"Street lights, traffic lights, you name it," said Faloon.

Scott, you missed the opening paragraph:

Any Bangor AMG'er confirm this?

It took a little over an hour here, about half way between Ellsworth and Machias.

Butch, why is Washington County out? I thought Jonesboro was online.

No idea Calvin. I don't even know if Jonesboro is online right now...

I do know there were some serious thunder, enough to shake the whole house more than these so-called earthquakes have ever done.

We have noticed that thunder storms this week have been just a little more severe than "normal".
