I took a walk with the dogs in the woods today. The black fly hatch has started in our neck of the woods. I think it's a little earlier than previous years.

Are the black flies out in your area yet?

I, and the black flies, played nine at Fox Ridge this afternoon. I made 2 birdies. They got 6 mouth fulls. They won.

They have been out for more than a week here with the exception of the storm early in the week. Gosh if feels like they have been out for about two or three weeks here and they very well could be.

I forgot how many black flies could be stirred up whilst gardening... I got lots done, but for an uncomfortably itchy price.. : D

Here in Jonesport my wife and I were doing some yard work this afternoon and they ate her up pretty good. Fortunately for me, my flavor doesn't seen to be to their liking.

Been out for a week or so here..They are a bit early but the numbers seem down so far compared with an average year...

I gave a pint of blood to the Red Cross Thursday and another pint to the black flies while mowing Saturday. They are really nasty up here. Time to dig out the Skin So Soft.

See Domino, now with a little substitution, you can learn how we feel.

I forgot how many (blood sucking Tax Profiteers) could be stirred up whilst (engaging in the market sector)...I got lots done, but for an (unneccessary burdensome, wasteful, bothersome, irritating, unjust, and economically destructive) price.

Knock on wood I have not seen any on the Island, we have been painting buoys and repairing traps and have noticed none. If I mow the lawn today it may be a different story.

They've been out here for over three weeks, but not too many. I am hoping they depart as early as they showed up, and take their skeeter brethren with them. The skeeters are just starting to appear at the Bunker.

Best investment ever! Bug Suit We each have one, have had them for 5+ years now and, even with a small hole or two here and there, they are a sanity/skin saver for the outdoorsman/woman.

Thanks for the link KathyP.

How breathable are those bug suits? Do they retain moisture? I'd consider getting something like that for gardening but only if it didn't make me feel like I'm in Florida while wearing one.

Very breathable! Even my husband who is, er, circumferentially challenged, wears his in the hottest of hot summer days and he says it's even wearable when muggy. It's a super light screen/mesh so the breeze goes right through it and it does not retain any moisture. He's on blood thinners and bleeds something awful with even the teensiest bug bites, so this has especially been a huge help for him...an absolute must-have item for fishing too!

It truly is a magic time of year, rivaled only by the waning days of leaf season when the mosquitos hvae died off.

Mike, rather than the Skin so Soft (which never has worked for me) I recommend the bug dope made right in Corinna - originally called Buzz Off, but changed to something else due to patents. It was invented by an American Indian woman and includes such things as lemon grass, wheat germ oil, and other good smelling stuff that really keeps the bugs away, for us anyway. Great on the dogs, too, and they smell so good. If anyone has other tips, please send them on. Kathy that suit looks good too, especially for someone out for an extended time.

I went outside to check the garden here in Newburgh and the black flies and no-seeums decided they like Italian food as they swarmed on me. I ran inside and got out my netsuit like you saw pictured above. Quite comfortable. However, don't wear sunglasses because the mesh darkens out most sun and with shades on it is too dark to see.

Also, check your dogs. We find black fly embedded in their eyelids when they come in and are constantly clearing their eyes.

Black flies are into their 3rd week here in China. Tell ya what else? Ticks! I've been bitten twice and found more on clothing. Please be aware. They are really thick this year.

When my parents found the first tick on their Sheltie, they got him his usual hair cut...which was the next day and the pet care center also bathed him to make sure there were no others on him and five others fell off...then they also applied a flea and tick treatment afterwards. It is the same treatment they have used the past couple of years.

Yes first tick was found on one of the humans in the house and then on the dog. So she has her flea collar on now and a few have been found on her dead.

They're out in force in Somerville. Last Thursday, the second I stepped out of my car to fish the Sheepscot River, there were hundreds on me. I had to hop back in the car, drive to Hussey's and pick up some Ben's bug spray. Even Ben's didn't deter all of them...
