BREAKING: Frary to primary Saviello for State Senate

UPDATE - Frary has withdrawn from the primary - see below http://www.asmainegoes.com/comment/698394#comment-698394
from over the AMG transom -

Professor John Frary, conservative columnist and 2008 second district Republican congressional candidate, will challenge fellow republican Senator Tom Saviello this spring in a primary for Maine Senate District 18. Word on the street is that Frary is supported in this effort by conservative activist Mary Adams, a close ally of Governor LePage.

Saviello is a former Democrat who switched parties to join the GOP. Speculation of another potential party shift has already begun.

I'm hearing that the Governor is behind this effort to unseat Mr. Savello. Circular firing squad as usual.

This is good news indeed.

I would sooner think that voters in Senate District 18 are behind this. This is good news indeed.

Saviello pays little heed to the wishes of his constituents and has proven more than once that his beliefs do not echo those of fiscal conservatives.

That is the old map. The numbers happen to just change from 18 to 17.

http://www.maine.gov/sos/cec/elec/2013/Senate/ss17.pdf This one actually shows both distrcts. Tom lives in Wilton and John live in Farmington (I think).

When does this change take

When does this change take effect? I was told it's not until next fall. It's a bit confusing at this point in time.

Technically the change took

Technically the change took affect on January 1, 2014. The candidates are collecting signatures to run in their new districts. Other than the issue of be districted out of your district* it really has no affect on the sitting legislaturers.

* This presumbably did not happen or we would have heard from the persom districted out.

Saviello is not a terrific Republican. He could get defeated.
But, can Frary win in November?

Having served with Saviello

Having served with Saviello when he was a Democrat turned Unenrolled I can tell you that he is a Republican for convenience sake
only. In fact he has changed colors so many times I question if he has any core values. He was in hot water a few years back when he was a still a Democrat for supporting his employers fight against DEP. If I remember correctly this didn't sit well with his fellow D's and precipitated his switch to U status.

I watched this guy make a joke of that congress run a few years ago and I'm not sure what his goal here is. I get the idea that he probably doesn't know much of anything about the business of state government and budgets and stuff like that. I think we better stick to legitimate people to run for office or regular folks will think we're a joke.

Frary to primary Saviello for State Senate

Is "primary" a verb? (I have the same question these days about "podium")

From my communications with

From my communications with Saviello he came across as a snotty, abusive liberal. I have great respect for Prof. Frary, he has forgotten more about government than most voters will ever know. He is much more honest and trustworthy than the incumbent.

Republicans have no business

Republicans have no business supporting a major welfare expansion - especially MaineCare, which has devastated our state budget for many years. Besides, a Frary speech on the Maine Senate floor would be worth the price of admission.

Actually, it will be a 3 way

Actually, it will be a 3 way race in November if The Perfesser takes out Savielo, who is already talking about running unenrolled if Frary runs. Tom obviously knows he can be beaten by John in the primary, and in a 3 way in a GOP year Frary gets the nod.

And as for Frary's knowledge of the budget and issues facing Augusta, doesn't anybody read his columns? He would score in the top 1% of all legislators on current events, and we haven't even gotten to the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, the Council of Trent or Justinian II. Some people are so amazingly well read that "regular" folks have no clue they are in presence of greatness :-)

There's no doubt that Frary

There's no doubt that Frary is well read, intelligent and widely traveled. He would no doubt make an excellent foil to Alfond and his ilk. But Frary's problem is that he comes across as a fruitcake. Now, while some of us enjoy fruitcake, the majority of the general election voters in senate 17 (or 18) don't.

Be careful using the term

Be careful using the term "fruitcake" or risk being labeled a homophobe by Michaud supporters.

Prof. Frary is a brilliant man and he would bring some much needed levity, maturity and wisdom to a legislature that seems to be filled with hypersensitive, narcissistic, spoiled brats.

There you go again, Gaffer, offering your 'opinion. "From my communications with Saviello he came across as a snotty, abusive liberal."

I agree completely with your assessment of Frary. Knowledgable about government, and a pleasure to read, or listen to speak.

Just a quick note that

Just a quick note that notwithstanding Ethan Strimmling and the post above both making a possible link, the Governor is not involved in a primary campaign.

Also, see note from Professor Frary at the bottom here: http://stateandcapitol.bangordailynews.com/2014/02/11/update-saviello-wo...

WinnMaine how do you know

WinnMaine how do you know this? Im hearing that he is. He and Beth Oconner and Mary adams and that they approched others before Frairy.
Also hearing that Brent Littlefeld is scampering around trying to cover his tracks.
All this is rumor for me though so i cant testify maybe WinnMaine or others have better facts. I also heard there is a hit list somewhere of other republicans that they will target for vengeance.

From the link in WinnMaine's post: “The rumor is that the governor recruited me,” said Frary. “He had no hand in it.”

The conversation on AMG improves when we exchange facts, not rumors.
