I am a bit confused on how some of the percentages are displayed. For example, on question #4. "How long have you been visiting AMG?" the third highest response was "Less then 1 year: .090%" I assume this mean 9% which should be typed as 9.0%. As written, .090% means less then 1/10th of one percent or only 1 out of 1,000 responses.

Don't mean to be too picky, just trying to clarify and correct things!

Thanks for doing the survey Scott and sharing the results.

AMG Editor's Note: Hi Sukee. Of 243 people responding to this question, 22 said they have been visiting AMG less than 1 year.

Yes, thanks Scott.
As a part of the .09% (as opposed to Obama's the top 1%).
I found this very revealing, to who was here on AMG.
Being a 'newbie' to all that Blog stuff, I was very taken back by the results.
I've been following this site for a while, to get some inside info on local issues.
These day's of reading brought me to believe that there were maybe 5% were state workers.
But, no 17% were state workers.
I would have guessed the rest were just at home, not happy.
No that's at a combined .20%.
No, I didn't do the math- just a rough guesstimate.
So, I was certainly surprised when- of the 251 replies came back that 33% were self employed.
The rest were working for someone, which we all are whether we like it or not.
That's @ 24%.

The other side is obvious- by reading the blog
Republican @. 61%
Democrat @ 11%
The rest of us- really that's all we are?

Also, If I'm interpreting this correctly.
Most of do write to our Congress, Senators or local paper and give our opinion.- like me on deaf ears no doubt.
I do a lot.
Most of us, do attend a town meeting or some other meeting on our tax money.
Makes me feel good that you do- I'm guilty of not often enough.

Public speech? seriously?
I think the survey said "beep" on this one.
But you said would or could otherwise @ 39% out of 232 people?
Man, that's my biggest fear.
No way I'm standing in front of people, even if I like them.
And that's not likely.

My point is you have a great crowd here.
AMG has brought some great people together.
You keep up the good work.

I am really glad see these results. Just one question...why do so many questions not add up to 100% and not even close to 100%.

I think what is interesting is the huge difference between the male and female demographic. I think I knew there would be a large gap, but not that large.

When looking at number 10, the only one I have not done is attend a political rally in the last two years.

As a female who posts often on AMG, I have at times regretted my choice of user name and even thought of asking Scott if I may change it.
Why? To see the effect of a gender-neutral name on responses to the things I write. Just curious. But not curious enough to try it.

Keep the handle, mainemom. Having smart, younger, analytical women here refutes any notion of AMG as a haven for cranky old men.

as an occasional poster and more than occasional reader, I find the survey much as expected AMG showcases the voices of the more active conservatives. My occasional visits may even become regular. Keep it up folks!

mainemon, your comment reminds me of seeing this recently -- "Study Finds Female-Name Chat Users Get 25 Times More Malicious Messages" http://www.ece.umd.edu/News/news_story.php?id=1788. As a software developer (male dominated field) I have heard similar things from women for years. Despite (or because?) of the fact that most guys in that field tend to be inept with women, there is this insane level of hostility behind the veil of the internet.

Unfortunately, it may be self-perpetuating to some degree, since so many women online have adopted gender-neutral or male names in response. I'm curious as to how you think the female username may have affected your interactions here.

It would be interesting to know the stats on the thousands of AMG lurkers - the ones who read AMG every day (sometimes multiple times per day), but never sign up or comment.

EVERYONE was happy! No one had a discouraging word!

why do so many questions not add up to 100%

Theat's the problem with multiple choice questions - one might not like the choices offered, or may not care to answer. For example the question" "Male or female"? Some would be confused, and some would even be insulted, when asked that question.

eagleisland, thanks so much, sadly I'm not a young woman anymore - it has been 8 years since I designated myself as mainemom and in that time my young'ns have all gone out on their own!

But I'll keep the name.

Three Pipe, the effect I attribute to my name, (not just a female, but one whose indentity seems to be wrapped in motherhood), seems to be a tendency for my comments to be ignored or skipped over while others obviously by men are taken seriously and responded to.
This is infrequent but noticeable.

As an experiment I have a gender neutral discus profile, and all commenters who reply to me assume I am male. It's pretty funny.

Ahhh, yes, Mike G. Everyone in the parade is out of step except for you.

And mainemom, you're still a spring chicken in my eyes. Then again, I'm a cranky old man! ;->

I thank you all for your comments and questions. This morning I posted an introductory paragraph to the AMG survey results. Here it is again:

Editor's Note: This survey was available online to registered and non-registered AMGers from April 6, 2012 through June 15, 2012. Most of the question results are here. Some questions were asked for in-house purposes. Some questions allowed one response only. Other questions, such as Question 2, allowed survey takers to choose multiple responses. Also, none of the questions required mandatory responses to submit the results. A survey taker could answer Questions 1-6, skip 7-9, and then answering all remaining questions.

I dont click on to this site for politics, per se. More for; [State] breaking news, breaking weather news, timely news,'news-you-cant-get-elsewhere' and to read the general climax of attitudes in the state.

If a national emergency[weather or terrorist] occurred that was effecting this state, i would go here to read news updates of what was going on, than to the slow poked news stations in the state. I recall one year there was a sizable earthquake in the state on a Sunday Morning, it was in the Boston news about an hour later. Maine news channel first reported it on the following Monday night news. One year a small child was run over and killed in a parking lot, It took three days for the news to first report it.

Also, this website has a clean interface like the Drudge Report. Unlike many websites which have switched to flashy bells and whistles and flashy sounds and pop ups
