State looks to assess fee on canoe, kayak owners

The canoe and kayak fee makes extending the fee increase for hunting and fishing licenses more palatable for sportsmen, said George Smith of the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine.

"The people against (canoe and kayak registrations) have no case at all," Smith said. "They are just being selfish. It's time to pay their share of the services. I have six canoes and kayaks and three people in my family with a fishing license . . . but I don't object. This makes it fair and it's compelling. It gives sportsmen a break."

I already checked with George. He said, "I wouldn't do that, I got 6 of em anyway!"
If you find it, you let me know.
Thanks

Why be confused they just did the expedient political thing of
having a poll and then no endorsement! There is nothing surprizing
here they are just like the rest of the lobbying shills for what's good for them!

I'm not sure about dementia, you can ask him yourself if you want.
Also, I don't think I stand corrected. I didn't see anything in the article that said, "SAM sponsors legislation to tax canoes & yacks". I happen to agree that sportsmen & women who hunt and fish carry all the freight for so called non-consumptive users. I don't see anybody else stepping up to pay the increasing costs. George said that & I agree with him.

Excuse my ignorance but what freight i.e.costs
are being carried?
Seems to me that the people who have K's and C's have minimal
impact on things andsinceall lakes andaponds sre everyones' to use
what is the issue?

No problem Bruce, one example relative to canoes & yacks are the rescues or recoverys after someone drowns or nearly drowns every spring. Also, the state has deemed that said users must have a lifejacket on board. This requires enforcement.

So George Smith, citizen has a different opinion than George Smith the director of SAM. I guess the papers will now have to ask him if he is speaking as a citizen or for SAM.

That would be up to the media establishment who is always fair & balanced to decide. Not for me.
