Cultural Appropriation

Comments?

http://www.msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/smart-living/5-things-you-may-have-no...

I thought this was how cultural blending started... accepting influences.

How many existing cultures wouldn't if this had not occurred in the past?

I think the world has been culturally appropriating from us long enough... give back the suits, computers, TVs... ;-)

Yeah that's retarded. I mean

Yeah that's retarded. I mean to be honest, as an atheist who doesn't take things very seriously (and as a result hold nothing sacred), I have a hard time identifying with the people who would be offended.

That said, while I can't understand why all the things listed in the link would be offensive, they are all extremely lame. Wearing a bindi? Lame. Talking about "my spirit animal"? Lame. White suburban teenagers trying to sound like they're from the hood? Extremely lame. Do I even need to address chopsticks in the hair?

I have a friend who went

I have a friend who went through really serious medical problems for many years culminating in a double organ transplant, lost and then restored vision (partial), and an amputation. This person adopted an "avatar" - a representative animal - to assist in the psychological response to the stresses involved. You imagine yourself as that animal, with its strengths, to bolster your mental state as you go through the troubles. This is, of course, the "spirit animal" adopted from native practices.

The jerks in the modern world would call this "cultural appropriation", make it illegal (as they are trying to do at the UN as I write this), and call my friend a cultural criminal.

I say it's mimicry, the sincerest form of flattery, and it was my friend's means of survival. No disrespect, insult, bad intent, or cultural oppression was intended - and none should be inferred.

And I'm not at all amused - or tolerant - of their bigoted claims to the contrary.

If I sound angry, it's because I AM.

Eh, I don't like it but how

Eh, I don't like it but how can you let that get you bent out of shape?

There will be idiots spouting on, everywhere, in every era. It's just that with the internet, the crazy voice gets amplified (both on the right and the left).

Do what I do, learn to tune it out.

They're trying to start the

They're trying to start the process of getting treaties and laws to ban it.

I'm hoping they fail...
