Dems: Dirigo Works For ME

From mainedems.org

Have at it!
Dirigo Works for ME
Republican leadership has formed a Political Action Committee to kill Dirigo and take healthcare away from over 8,000 Mainers. Siding with big greedy insurance companies over the public interest, Republicans are on the wrong side of this debate. It's time for the Maine Republican Party to stop playing politics with people's healthcare. Healthcare is not a privilege for Mainers; it's a necessity. Dirigo should not be a political issue. The program fits with our Maine values and is step towards providing affordable healthcare to all Mainers.

Let's cut through the politics and look at Dirigo Heath for what it is; a first in the nation program to help Maine small business and families deal with high healthcare costs.

Thanks to Dirigo health, despite the national trends, the healthcare situation has gotten better in Maine. The percentage of Mainers without health insurance fell by over 5% in the last year, bucking the national trend which saw the number rise by more that 17%. Fewer Mainers are going without healthcare because Dirigo works. Mainers are getting healthier too. According to the United Health Foundation, Maine is now the 8th healthiest State in the Nation, up from 10th just a few years ago.

Dirigo Health is working, helping Maine families and small businesses. Now, because it is an election year, Republicans have turned against Dirigo, playing politics with people's healthcare. In the legislature Democrats and Republicans found that Health Savings Accounts and High Risk pools don't work. (Emphasis added. Mike Vaughan, what about that assertion?)
We created Dirigo together. Dirigo is a compromise between Republicans, Democrats and the insurance industry. It's real attempt to provide affordable healthcare to all Mainers. It fits with our Maine values and it is a program we can all be proud of.
Maine Republicans have no alternatives to Dirigo and do not share Democrat's ultimate goal of providing affordable healthcare to all Mainers. Dirigo saves us all money. It works for us all.

The Maine Democratic Party needs you're help to protect affordable healthcare in Maine.
If you would like to attend a rally, write a letter to the editor, or help in any other way please contact Arden Manning amanning@mainedems.org Together, we will fight for the future of affordable healthcare in Maine.

The more they dig in their heals, the deeper they go into an abyss!

Has anyone else heard the MSEA ad on Dirigo...what a hoot. I just started a thread on that subject. Endless opportunities for humor!

They have been reading their own press releases for too long.

When looking at any govt program it is necessary to be soft hearted about the need and hard headed about the cost and whether it is meeting that need. Or whether there really is a need.

They skip all the questions about cost and performance and just hammer away that something happened. Expect to see a lot of this for 11/12 of 2006.

Letter to the Editor

Here is the letter I routed to the paper that shall not be named on the new union/dirigo add.
I am writing in incredulous horror, over the new Baldacci cheer leading pro Dirigo add put out by the Unions. Who do these folk believe they are fooling? To misquote President Reagan "The trouble with our union friends is not that they are ignorant: It is just that they know so much that just isn't so".

They speak of cheaper premiums but sort of forget to say for whom. They forget to note the increase in non Dirigo bills due to the Dirigo tax. They speak of lower costs but ignore the law suits in progress that deny any savings at all. They claim more covered but forget that the 'more covered' consist of only about 1300 folk who did not already have insurance and that the per person cost for these folk is well over $10,000 a year.

Most tellingly, the folk paying for the add, MSEA Local 1989, sort of forget to note that their union members most assuredly are NOT enrolled in Dirigo. In fact, no union in Maine is playing with the Governor’s scheme. None.

Dirigo will only be taken seriously when the employees unions, the education unions and all those legislators in Augusta are enrolled. Till then it is simply a PR scheme that is costing a fortune.
I doubt they will print because I had a letter in the paper a scant month or so ago AND, so far at least, the paper has not mentioned the radio add. Add to that that they love Dirigo and will always carry water for the democrat governor.

Still, I could be wrong.

Quick, we better inform the majority of the states that have High Risk Pools that they don't work.

I demand that if you run an ad for a product you must be using it. If not you are an outside spoke person and should disclose that fact. If this is so good then let the unions and the Pols enroll.

We are looking at an HSA amendment for Dirigo (Lindell) and there are two other HSA proposals on the table.

There is a High Risk Pool provision in Dirigo already, and there is another HRP bill before the legislature this session.

I guess we ain't done decidin' yet, or maybe...

note he didn't say the elderly......

Isn't that advt. a political commercial for Baldacci?

..so why haven't the Rep's filed a complaint with the ethics commission? Sounds like it was paid for out of a union PAC.

The union members in the Dirigo alliance were very passive; but a good response is 'well if Dirigo is so good, why aren't the unions switching policies?' ....but will there be a response without allies with PAC money?

This Radio Spot is a JOKE

I heard the radio spot this morning - what a JOKE!!

"...lowered premiums..."

"...cut costs..."

"...saved millions of dollars..."

Liberals are so eager to believe in something,
they'll believe anything!

Dirigo is a distraction. Another expensive experiment.

Please remember that "FREE Healthcare" means that somebody else is paying YOUR bill.

Dems: Dirigo Works For ME
This Week at the Maine Democratic Party:

Dirigo health has quickly become a huge campaign issue.
Wait....didn't a paper say Dirigo was a complete none issue?
Dirigo fits in with our Democratic values and our vision for the future.
Yes, but your vision of the state is having the few pay for the many.
It really is a step towards affordable health care for all Mainers. Republicans understand that Dirigo will lead to health care for all and they oppose it.
No, Republicans oppose it because it's an expensively bad implementation of a good goal.
We need to stand up for Dirigo Health and fight for health care. Please write a letter to the editor. If you need talking points about Dirigo for a letter please contact your Field Organizer. You can find out who the Organizer is for your area by going to http://www.mainedems.org/meet_party_staff.asp
We need to tell Republicans that Dirigo fits with our Maine values and that Republicans should let Dirigo work because it works for all of us. Here is the general message around Dirigo.
And the Sun Journal gave me a hard time about "leading text" for a LTTE....... You see a LTTE with any of these points call them, email them, shout at them and let the papers know that the LTTE is strictly because of "leading text".
1. Maine Republicans want to bring Bush-style health care to Maine. Under George Bush’s leadership, we have entered a health care crisis in this county. 17% of Americans did not have health care last year and over 8.5 million children went without coverage, according to the United Health Foundation.
But they'd be wrong on the 17% number. If 45 million Americans don't have health coverage than to get to a 17% number the USA would have to have had roughly 30 million people just dissappear. Little math lesson for the Dems, 45/297 = 15.15% It is reasonably supported that 8.5 million children went without coverage.
2. Bush Style healthcare is wrong for the county and wrong for Maine. Nationally in 2005, health care costs rose by 15%, while salaries only rose by 4%. Who does Bush-style health care affect most? According to Americans for Health care, 74% of the uninsured are working families. The Bush health care plan doesn’t work. It hurts working families and children, ultimately leaving 46 million Americans without coverage.
Bush has a health care plan for everyone? Note to Dems, 2005 isn't over yet, just where are you getting 2005's numbers from? Are you guys prophets now too? Regardless, healthcare costs increased more in Maine and wages grow less! And which is it? 45 million or 46 million? Geesh, you guys need to higher a prrof reader and a fact checker!
3. Thanks to Dirigo health, and despite the national trends, the health care situation has gotten better in Maine. The percentage of Mainers without health insurance fell by over 5% in the last year, bucking the national trend which saw the number rise. Dirigo works for all Mainers, saving us all money. Democrats have always fought for working families.
You sure this wasn't because of the medicaid waiver that allowed the state to cover the parents of children who qualify for Medicaid? That's was a pretty big bump up to 24,900 people....unfortunately the state hit a federal spending cap and now has to dump 7,000 - somehow I'm not sure those 7,000 are getting counted as uninsured yet.
4. Republicans should let Dirigo work it works for all of us. Dirigo fits with our Maine values and those opposed to affordable health care are out of step with Maine's tradition and heritage.
Find me one Republican who doesn't want affordable health care. I dare you.
Click this link to find a listing of newspapers to write to http://www.mainedems.org/letter_editor.asp
Give them the leading text then send them off to write the LTTE......
Republican Leaders continued their attacks against Dirigo Health this week. Siding with big insurance companies, the Maine GOP is playing politics with people's health care. If you have time, please write a letter to the editor telling Republicans to "let Dirigo work, it works for all of us".
You can find an e-mail address to your local paper at http://www.mainedems.org/letter_editor.asp
Leading them again.....Republicans have sided with the people of Maine. If Dirigo is allowed to continue it will be yet another drag on the economy. If current health insurance regulation is allowed to continue it will continue to be a 1 billion dollar drag on Maine's economy.
George Bush actually admitted that he is responsible for leading us into war on faulty evidence. This is the first time Bush has publicly stated that the evidence was faulty.
You're going to be amazed with how well the American public likes it when a politician admits that they made a mistake.
Thanks for everything you do and have a Happy Holiday,

Pat Colwell
Chairman of the Maine Democratic Party
That'd be Merry Christmas, "Holiday" is singular so you couldn't possible be referring to both Christams and New Years.

Have a Nice day Pat.

Towncrier isn't the only MSEA member who's being fooled by the union, as it seems like most of the membership has no idea how high their staff salaries are. In 2004, when the median household income in Maine was just $39,395 (2004 Census), many of their staff earned a nice wage:
· Carl Leinonen (former exec director) $97,900
this is now Tim Belcher's job
· Tim Belcher (former MSEA general counsel) $72,042
· Susan Mitchell, director of policy & legislation $70,411
· John Graham, director of field services $70,361
· Joan Towle, director of finance & administration $69,424
· Matthew McDonald, director of organizing $63,640
· Steven Butterfield, IS director $61,656
· Chester Hillier, employee rep $61,656
· Ronald Ahlquist, employee rep $57,218
· Pamela Morin, employee rep $56,889
· Todd Ricker, employee rep $53,010
· Stephanie Von Glinski, organizer $53,007
· Harvey Carr, employee rep $47,992
· Leslie Manning, employee rep $47,980
· Ethelyn Purdy, insur Coord. $39,504
· Mary Labbe, support $34,794
· Debra Roy, support $34,105
· Diane Sharpe, admin assist $34,085
· Melissa Powell, support $31,147
Plus a nice benefits package (most likely),
Plus an array of excessive amount of hotel and restaurant bills,
Plus a LOT of other wasteful stuff... but the Governor doesn't seem to mind this, especially since he is now forcing almost all state employees to financially support this wasteful union.
