Looks like I am on the fringe of the blackout and will remain powered up. Looking at the list of Searsport roads, I would wager what they really mean is "the entire town"

Couldn't they wait until it gets really cold?

Thank you so much for posting this! As a nightshift worker from home, this is really important information--info I would have never had access to otherwise as I don't have a TV and rely solely on the internet for my news. Again, many thanks!

Your Coleman 2000i generator will meet the need. It will run 13 hours on a gallon of gas. Be careful with small generators. They make real electricity.

Kathy, are you saying CMP didn't notify you directly? Seems like they could at least have some automated calls made to the affected customers.

No, they did not. HOWEVER, a few weeks ago while I was puttering around outside, a bucket truck pulled in the driveway. Dude comes out of the truck and starts telling me he can fine me $200 on the spot for having my little bird feeder attached to the telephone pole plunked in my front yard and to take it down or he would....mildly antagonistic like. I giggled at him thinking it was a joke and he wasn't amused and went into this whole diatribe about how nothing is to be attached to or even within a 10-foot perimeter around a telephone pole, whether it's on private property or not. Nice customer service CMP, ya bastids.

I have had an American Flag on my ...their...pole for two years now. Lighted at night even.. Sorry CMP.. It a SOLAR light!... No problems.. So...Kathy hang a U.S. flag on the pole above your bird feeder, and see what happens..or does not happen!

I think the restriction comes in part due to the old practice of climbing the poles with spikes, and having things on the pole could create a legitimate hazard. But beyond that, I also believe the pole itself is the property of the power company and they have the right to keep you from mounting things on them.

Huh, the poles on my street all have "this area closed to digging of shellfish" and these are covered with chicken wire! lol

Strange...We've had birdfeeders and a hanging flower pot on ours for YEARS....Right next to the road even...Is there more to the story ???

The director of our local power company (whom I respect and greatly admire), says the rules against posting, hanging, or attaching anything to utility poles WITHOUT PERMISSION is directly related to worker safety.

In particular, staples and nails can rip the protective clothing that line workers must wear to protect them from electrocution. Metal of any kind placed on poles can also create a ground or current where one isn't supposed to be.

An innocent attachment by consumers of something on a pole could inadvertently spell death for a line worker - especially if they need to make an emergency repair at night, in the dark. That's why electric companies ask consumers to request permission before placing anything on a utility pole.

On the other hand, there is no reason for utility company employees to act like a horse's patootie, either. A polite request, with a helpful brochure or flyer explaining the reasons for the request, would net them a lot more honey than flies.

No Mr. Nickerson, nothing more to my "story" at all. Why are some people always looking for dirt where there is none? It's the oddest thing!

If you didn't want to discuss your story you shouldn't have brought it up......I was just asking if there were other reasons why he would stop just to harass you.....People rarely do things like that in such a manner for no reason what so ever...If there isn't more , fine....nuff said....

They might stop to harass her if they were just being a horse's patootie. There's usually at least one in every profession.

Came home late on Friday after picking up #1 son from his Latin league competition. We were prepared with lights etc. But, what jumped out at me was the amazing star light. With no light pollution it was a veritable planetarium show!

So maybe there's some merit to the efforts to protect the "night sky" a little, Ken? (I believe around Bar Harbor there has been talk about light pollution)

Plunging the world into darkness has its downside as well...
