Ghetto Behavior: Spending Other People's Money on Extravagances

Having lived in California housing projects for three years in the early 1970s, I am qualified to diagnose ghetto behavior when I see it. The reckless disregard for people whose money one uses in order to live "high on the hog" qualifies as ghetto behavior.

This thread is for chronicling this behavior, whether by Mr. Obama or his wife.

ITEM:
Expensive massages, top shelf vodka and five-star hotels: First Lady accused of spending $10m in public money on her vacations:

The Obamas' summer break on Martha's Vineyard has already been branded a PR disaster after the couple arrived four hours apart on separate government jets.

But according to new reports, this is the least of their extravagances.

White House sources today claimed that the First Lady has spent $10million of U.S. taxpayers' money on vacations alone in the past year.

ITEM: In June, Michelle Obama brought along her two daughters and two of her brother's children to her African junket.

Mrs. Obama’s South Africa Trip Cost Taxpayers Over $500,000:

First Lady Michelle Obama’s trip to South Africa and Botswana…cost taxpayers well over half a million dollars, possibly in the range of $700,000 or $800,000…Many may question whether such an expensive outreach overseas by the president’s wife is worthwhile given the threat of the ballooning federal debt to the economy.

…the trip, while featuring many official events, also included tourist components…a nonworking chance to meet Nelson Mandela… and a safari.

ITEM:

From last December: Obama's Million Dollar Hawaiian Vacation: Costs to Taxpayers Detailed:

…three luxury beachfront homes…Kailua Bay…Obama and his family and friends...Christmas vacation….

Secret Service agents… have their own room…no more than $250 a day per person…Secret Service and Navy Seals rented…6 beachfront homes for the duration…between $1,000 and $1,250 per day…

…White House staff staying…on Waikiki Beach. Basic rooms...cost between from $350 to $450 per night, plus a $20 per night additional charge and 13 percent tax…

It's the knee jerk reaction

It's the knee jerk reaction from the "non-haters" on the left. Michelle leads off her post by saying she lived in a public housing project. Her family is proof she is not racist, but the talking points have been scripted.

Wonder how Matt would feel about Condoleza Rice in the White House. Now there's a candidate!

I still give Matt8888 comment as being sarcastic. He obviously knows what a stinking corporate stink pile this man is, Obama being a Nobel Peace prize laureate, has laid down as much death and destruction of innocents as any president in the last 20 years. He is just being sarcastic.

Why refer to "ghetto" at all?

Why refer to "ghetto" at all? Egregiously spending money that's not your own has nothing to do with race (and please don't try to pass of "ghetto" as being a race-neutral term). What is gained by calling Obama's spending "ghetto behavior"? Why label it as such? What's the point in doing so, unless you actually want to bring race into it?

Here is a quote from Star

Here is a quote from Star Jones:

"I was recently having a conversation with a friend and the topic of shame came up. Over a glass of Sancerre, I was lamenting how shocked I was that one particular reality “star” had done some ridiculously over-the-top ghetto (not the place, rather the attitude) thing on television."

She refers to a "ghetto attitude" which I take to mean a black attitude. A few things come to mind here:

1. There probably is a ghetto attitude which is not, in my opinion, limited to blacks and...

2. It is OK for Star Jones to use the term and not be called racist but whites are forbidden to use these two good English words in tandem.

3. If an action is indeed characteristic of a race or religion or country of origin then use the term that best describes it.

So spending other people's money is characteristic of blacks? Oh my.

Why not call it "down east doublewide behavior," since so many of our citizens along the airline are on public assisance, yet still manage to sport snowmobiles and ATVs and smoke six dollar a pack Marlboros?

Matt8888: "Racist comments by tea party members. Not surprised."

I find it unbelievable that you might be referring to me, but apparently, you are. As for being a "tea party member," I am not. You need only search AMG to find that I am quite verbal about my feelings in that department.

As for your outrageous claim that I am a racist, I will not dignify that idiocy with an answer.

How utterly disappointing that you feel the need to stoop to such a cheap, transparent, and hackneyed tactic. Of course, you and others who turn everything into matters of race understand that such invectives as "racist" are conversation stoppers, and that's what you are trying to do: stop conversations which you cannot intelligently join.

Matt: "Why refer to "ghetto" at all? Egregiously spending money that's not your own has nothing to do with race (and please don't try to pass of "ghetto" as being a race-neutral term)."

Matt: "So spending other people's money is characteristic of blacks? Oh my."

It is you and the other Matt -- I guess it's another Matt -- who are being racist here, in the very fact that you ascribe either housing projects/ghettos or the ghetto mentality to Blacks.

The word "ghetto" has only recently been co-opted by those who would like to make it about Blacks. Its original use was to describe the place where Jews were compelled to live in Venice.

In modern, normal -- read "non-racist" -- terms, it is a place where people live due to social and economic reasons.

You can go on crying "racist" at every statement with which you disagree but have not got the intelligence or justification to refute. I guess you think it works well for you. Honestly, it does not work well at all, outside the quarters of Media Matters and other progressive enclaves.

I stand by my statement and hereby ask YOU to stop ascribing racial stereotypes to things which are said in plain English.

It's a type of behavior, for

It's a type of behavior, for sure, and we see it in whites as well as anyone else.

It could be the fellow living in a trailer with 2 motorcycles, an ATV and working under the table to avoid paying child support.

It could also be the suburban contractor who gives a cash discount so he doesn't have to pay taxes on his income, doesn't pay his bills, gives about $20 to charity every year, but takes Carribean vacations and drives a Cadillac SUV.

Matt: "Why not call it "down

Matt: "Why not call it "down east doublewide behavior"..."

First of all, let's have YOU use the terms you understand, and I will use those which I understand. I have never lived in a "down east doublewide," just as you have obviously never lived in a ghetto.

Secondly, just out of curiosity, are you averring that that such a phrase as "down east doublewide behavior" has no racial connotations?

Thirdly, I refuse to buckle to people whom I choose to call "Vocabulary Nazis," who have highjacked words. You can use the false meanings of such words if you like, but your arrogance in trying to mandate that the rest of the English-speaking world recognize such corruption of language is shameful.

And now that you have succeeded to some extent in making the conversation about race and racism, I would ask that this thread get back on track, which I outlined in the first post of this thread.

Thank you.

Why not call it "down east

Why not call it "down east doublewide behavior,"

I resemble that remark!

But we call it a "manufactured home".

Anyway, you can't accuse Michelle of being a racist. She's posted here about her ethnic background, and she not exectly white, err.. not exactly BLACK, she's kind of somewhere in the spectrum.

Me, I'm eastern european pale. I am usually the whitest, even in a group of Mainers. Even in the summertime I stand out like a loaf of Wonder Bread in a Jewish deli.

Anyway, my explaination for that type of behavior is that it is caused by a fixation on material things - usually as a result of spiritual bankruptcy.

U.S. sued over Michelle's secretive 'family outing'
'How much did the American people spend to send the first lady' on safari?

Judicial Watch has filed a lawsuit over the federal government's refusal to disclose how much taxpayers spent to send Michelle Obama on a "family outing" that included a safari in Africa.

"How much did the American people spend to send the First Lady on a family outing…the trip seems to have been totally unnecessary and…an excuse for the Obama family to go on a safari..."

I just got off the phone with

I just got off the phone with Judicial Watch, which gave me permission to print the following. (Emphasis is mine, and I am once again aghast at the trend of the federal government to ignore lawful requests for information!)

Judicial Watch Sues US Air Force for Documents Detailing the Cost to Taxpayers for Michelle Obama’s Family Trip to Africa

Judicial Watch, the organization that investigates and fights government corruption, announced today that it filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit on August 19, 2011, against the United States Air Force to obtain records related to the June 21-27, 2011, trip taken by First Lady Michelle Obama, her family, and her staff to South Africa and Botswana (Judicial Watch v. U.S. Air Force (No. 11-1496)). Judicial Watch is seeking the documents to determine details about the trip and, in particular, a breakdown of the costs to taxpayers.

The Judicial Watch FOIA request filed on June 28, 2011, seeks:

  • Any and all records concerning mission taskings of First Lady Michelle Obama’s June 21-27,
  • 2011 trip to South Africa and Botswana.
  • Any and all records of concerning transportation costs for Mrs. Obama’s June 21-27 trip to
  • South Africa and Botswana.
  • Any and all passenger manifests (DD-2131) for Mrs. Obama’s June 21-27, 2011 trip to South
  • Africa and Botswana.

.

According the U.S. Postal Service records, Judicial Watch’s FOIA request was received by the Air Force on July 6, 2011. A response to the request was due within 20 working days, or by August 3, 2011. As of August 19, 2011, the date of the complaint, the Air Force has failed to produce the records requested or respond with a date they will be forthcoming.

It occurs to me as I read

It occurs to me as I read this that in the modern 'multi-cultural' milieu we live in, "racist" can be applied to almost anyone, not just those who think a particular race is somehow inferior.

If a college would not exalt a minority and create special studies, and a campus center for that minority study concentration, they would likely be called racist.

If members of the general population don't similarly exalt "the one" and his coterie of similarly skinned elites, but simply consider they should not 'judge them by the color of their skin,' they risk being called racist.

Anyone who suggests our entire culture and social structure should be 'color-blind' runs the same risk. Try suggesting that affirmative action quotas and set-asides are by definition not color-blind, and see what happens.

Try suggesting that that Obama is a white president because he had a white mama and see what happens. He wants the advantage of deciding what to call himself if he is a 50-50. Why do you think that is?

We will never move beyond racism as long as race gives you advantages, many of them codified in law.

Dale Tudor: "That's two plane trips where one should suffice."

It is my understanding that each time Obama's Air Force One takes off, a decoy with the same number of agents and stand-ins does as decoys. (The same was true for Clinton's air trips. I do not believe W. employed the decoy subterfuge.)

The same goes for the plane which carries the First Lady and First Kids (which is generally the same Boeing 747-200B plane).

So in actuality, that's FOUR plane trips where one should suffice.

there’s also a bit of

there’s also a bit of wariness among the wealthiest ones, an uncertainty whether Obama will affirm them. “Obama is more a man of the people (commoners),” says a Vineyarder who’s part of black high society. “He doesn’t seem to identify with affluent black people.
