Global Warming in Maine

The next time your politicians start wasting more time debating this crazy issue please remember (or send them) this image.
My steps are still icy - could someone please pass the global warming so I can get them melted off?
Industry, 47'30"N. 19 inches snow and ice, front lawn.
Please learn the difference between climate (the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period of time) and weather (the state of the atmosphere at a place and time).
Yesterday the LSJ published an article that stated that a Republican investigating group has determined that global warming does exist. I would provide a link, but they have screwed up their website again. My wife, the ultra liberal, put the paper in my face and gloated: See?!
I answered as follows: If this momentous announcement is true, would it not warrant better treatment, especially from a left-leaning paper, than a small tag on the front page leading to a small, detail-free piece buried inside near the want ads?
Thanks Nancy, I know the difference well. More importantly, I also know a sham when I see it.
I remember the 1970s cry of "Global Cooling" when we were told daily the next Ice Age was upon us and we had to act fast to stop the ice from covering the Earth. Next I remember the horrific "Hole in the Ozone" layer that was going to instantly fry us all if we didn't act immediately. Then came "Global Warming" where we saw the posed photo of the Polar Bear on a sheet of ice and we were told he was dying, starving and just lost her cub and we must act fast to save the world or we would be flooded with the melting ice cap. Now I see it is "Climate Change" so no matter what the crazy scam is, it can turn 180-degrees and still be "right".
Sorry Charlie, when it became obvious it was a money making scheme (just send money and you can repent for your wasteful sins and your "carbon footprint" (gag) will be magically reduced while the bank accounts of the fear mongers is increased, others started catching on as well.
When Algore uses more energy in a month than I will in a lifetime, and still claim some kind of "moral authority" over us unwashed masses, lots of other people caught on as well.
I'll take science over sensationalism any day, and science says that mother nature creates more harmful "pollution" in a year than all of mankind in 1000 years. The Earth seems to be doing just fine.
I'll worry about "real" issues and let the liberals cry over a tree when it is harvested, and the human impact of a grain of salt in the plains, a spec of sand in the desert, a or a fart in a hurricane.
What Bigshooter said!
Nancy,
Please learn some history as well. The region where I sit and type this was once covered by a sheet of ice a mile thick. It has indeed gotten warmer since then, but man had nothing to do with it. Despite the climate models telling us that we should be getting warmer all the time, we are not. Perhaps you believe becuase of the cooked data and the crooked scientists that show some moderate warming by modifying and cherry picking the data. I understand that global warming is a religion and you appear to be one of the true believers, but you are not permitted to use the government to foist your religion on the rest of us.
What Bigshooter said, with this tagged on: a lot of the same people who were screaming "Global Cooling! Do something now!" are now the same people who are screaming "Global Warming/Man-Caused-Climate-Change/(Insert this weeks scary phrase here)! Do something now!". And gosh darn it, America, then and now, was to blame for it all (ignoring Chinese coal fired power plants and Communism's rape of the environment).
Pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase stop ! You'll make the people like nancyeh cry if you keep confusing them with the facts. AMEN Bigshooter!!!! Personally I'm still trying to figure out what "normal weather" is.
PS I just stepped out to start my car 18 degrees and I have about 20 inches of snow in my back yard....
I live in Aroostook County and have 3 feet of snow in the woods. We're planning to take the grandkids out tomorrow for one more x-c ski tour around the front field. Unlike you all, though, I see what the weather today looks like, but understand that what's outside my window as a snapshot in time has only a small connection to the larger picture. The sad news is: it's my (and your) grandkids who will begin to feel the effects of global climate change and they will - rightly - blame us for not having paid sufficient attention (at least) or having outright denied the problem (at worst). I'd prefer to be known for the former.

Nancy.... you've guilted me ....I'll immediately start working on volcanic discharges , and the change of the earth's tilt........along with the methane releases from the seabed.......
well said bigshooter
I see nothing wrong with people believing climate change is man made and they take steps to reduce THEIR carbon footprint. Good for you, taking responsibility for your own actions.
But it is about the money as Bigshooter spoke and it's all about shoving their beliefs down our throats at the point of a gun.
I would not classify NancyEH as a true believer but more of a true follower. Even Gore admits it is a joke and nothing more than a scam.

But hey if she wants to put poisonous light bulbs in her house because someone told her it was good for something then so be it. But I am still trying to figure out how having poisonous light bulbs made overseas, shipped here and then have to be turned in when burnt out because they are bad for the environment helps with Global Warming, I mean Climate Change. I think one would be more worried about the debt being foisted on her grandchildren than on something that man cannot control.
NancyEH do you have a wind turbine, solar panels, no fossil fuel burning vehicle, no diswasher, no clothes dryer a solar powerd computer per chance (if you do I applaude you) or are you like Gore and the rest, all talk no action.
Here is another gem for the folks who think they can burn up the food supply to save the planet at the expense of starving people just so they can feel good.

For the sake of argument, let's stipulate the climate is changing (it always is).
Let's also stipulate there are limits to our financial capacity to address the problem of climate change.
Suppose we put our resources (money) toward efforts to avert man-made climate change, but the climate doesn't stop changing. The predicted harmful effects on future generations go unmitigated.
Or suppose we admit we don't know if there's anything we can do to stop the climate from changing, so instead we put our resources (money) into technology and intiatives to mitigate the harmful effects being predicted about climate change (eg, potable water, tropical disease, etc.).
Which seems wiser?
To me it's obvious that putting our resources toward mitigation is wiser, and kinder to future generations.
Nancy, the important phrase here is "Man Made". Nobody will argue the climate changes and shifts in cycles. It's nature. What the joke is (and the point of the frustration) that by my changing vehicles from a safe SUV to a silly "SmartCar" it makes any difference at all, other than making my family less safe while traveling. It is a zero impact effect. Like someone else said, if you want to "believe" and you alter the way you live to "feel good" about your Earthly contribution, thats great. Please just be as understanding at my choice. Neither of us will have an "real" impact anyway, so we might as well do what we believe to be the best for our situation. Fair enough?
The real point of contention is when we KNOW a SINGLE volcanic erruption spews more carbon than all of us humans could ever produce in a lifetime of horrible enviromental behavior and there have been 10s of thouands of these erruptions, (and I think we try to keep our impact as low as possible just because most of us do care enough to not do things that obviously pollute to excess), to believe that we have any REAL impact. When we start legislating and altering the ways we can live that are more dangerous and expensive on one hand, while the biggest "Enviromentalists" fly their Jets all over the world spewing more than the rest of us will ever make in several lifetimes, while demanding that "we" cut back or pay a big sum to a magic bank account that will make everything all better again, it's not so funny or cute anymore.
Asking that people not dump used motor oil into the nearest lake makes sense. Mandating that a cow not fart in the midst of a tsunami does not.
Someone else also pointed out that where we live used to be burried under a mile of ice at one time, so I think all in all, "Global Warming" can be a good thing.
Sorry, I just have "real" things to focus on and can't muster up a tear for the things that don't actually count. But, hey, if it makes you feel good, have at it. Just stay out of my wallet. :-)
Your grand children are much more likely to feel the effects of the decreased economic opportunities brought on by con men like AL Gore than any effects from "global climate change".
Climate Change? Duh!
Evertime I hear this, I ask, "What about the Ice Age? Fortunately, things warmed up a bit." Climate change is as real as the difference between low tide and high tide, just over a longer period of time. It's pure arrogance to assert that you can "save the planet." It's also absurd to waste natural resources." Switching to CFL bulbs or driving a Prius may make you "feel" better, but the facts (and history) simply do not support the argument that modern man has caused global warming.
That said, I recycle, attempt to use resources efficiently whenever possible and support alternative energy production, from nuclear to wind. I do these things for two reasons: 1.) I believe we have an inherent, moral obligation to be good stewards of our environment; 2.) I save money. The rest is hype and just the latest marketing buzz, driven by chicken-little types who are always focused on some sort of disaster.
As you may already know, there is a group of scientists at UofM, Orono, that check ice cores from Antartica to determine global warming.
I have a nephew in UMO that has told me some of the scientists have learned/ noticed etc'. that the facts don't support the science. They have been told to be quiet. If you ask the university about global warming findings, you will be directed to the "one" scientist to answer your questions. Because: They know the science is wrong or at least questionable, BUT, the university gets federal dollars for their "research". Without the federal dollars, a group of scientists don't have a job/income $$$$$.
NOW DO YOU UNDERSTAND ?
The Group, VOLCANOS NOT! is organizing a conference in New Guinea this summer site of several active volcanoes. Thousands of members are expected to make the lengthy jet flight in order to attend the conference . A 50 acre site in the rain forest near the base of one volcano is being cleared so the group can set up a base of operations.
The conference will center around the study of primitive tribes sacrificial rituals that have been scientifically proven to reduce volcanic eruptions. This is based on the recent studies by a highly regarded English university research team's findings.
The group is currently seeking members who would like to participate in an actual ritual sacrifice to appease the volcanoes. An unnamed spokesperson said that "these volunteers may become the first of a new regime of environmentalist superheroes who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice . And unlike the primitives who believed that "gods" were responsible for the eruptions , we will not buy into any of that "religious foolishness."
When questioned about the environmental impact of jet flights and thousands of visitors on the island fragile environment ....the VOLCANOES NOT spokesperson said it is a small price to pay if we can stop the eruptions.
There is a simple, basic question that the believers in global warming need to answer: "What is the correct temperature of the Earth?" It's a question occasionally asked but never answered. It is akin to the question "Exactly what is the fair share that the 'rich' should be paying in taxes?"
(OK, so we already know the answer to the latter--"More. Whatever it is you're paying now, you have to pay more for your Fair Share".)
Vikingstar... as I said in an earlier post , I'm trying to figure out what "normal weather" is.
Saw a t-shirt the other day - "Maine Orange Growers Association." Curious, I inquired how many orange growers there were in Maine. Well there aren't any yet, but this gentleman and a number of his ambitious friends are waiting for global warming to make Maine an ideal orange growing climate. It was their way of poking fun at the chicken little crowd. Like Readers Digest says, "Humor is the best medicine."
Al
NancyEH:
Since you 'know' that Man-Made-Global-(insert the current Scary Phrase here) is taking place, please tell us what the 'correct' temperature of the Earth should be.
While you're at it, please tell us what percentage of people's incomes should be confiscated for taxes. Thank you.
NancyEH will not respond, for she is a troll, sent here by her liberal masters to muddy the waters.
Reaganite, don't you mean master baiters?
Al
I might mean that, Al. But this is a family friendly site. ;-)

It is 11:35 a.m. on Thursday, April 7, 2011 here at 44,41N/69,1W in Penobscot County and it is 38 degrees F with piles of snow in my yard!
And the problem with global warming is??????? I'd welcome it at this point in the calendar. And if Al Gore doesn't like it, I'd be happy to bury him head first in the piles of snow on my lawn.
