GOP Chair calls for Resignation of Democratic Party Leader

The Maine GOP Chairman today is calling on the Maine Democratic Party Chairman to demand the immediate resignation of Maine Democratic Party Secretary Susan Cook for her outrageous and false personal attack against the Senate President. Ms. Cook made her attack while testifying at a public hearing of the Commission to Reapportion Maine's Congressional Districts. The Independent Chairman opened the public hearing by requesting those testifying to remain civil, and on topic. Ms. Cook blatantly disregarded that request, launching into a bizarre, accusatory rant. The Senate President was neither in the room nor a member of the Reapportionment Commission.

Ms. Cook's accusations against the popular Senate President Kevin Raye speak to the fears within the Democratic Party of a perceived run for higher office by Raye.

"This is just the latest in a series of recent attacks by Maine Democrats to divert attention from Republican successes," said Maine Republican Party Chairman Charlie Webster. "Democrats have failed in their assault on Republican job- creating policies championed by the Senate President so they have resorted to personal attacks. Kevin Raye is an honorable public servant who is respected by members of both parties. These extreme, false, and slanderous attacks made by the Maine Democratic Party Secretary have no place in Maine Politics."

STATEMENT

"I just listened to this recording of the slanderous accusation leveled
by Susan Cook, Secretary of the Maine Democratic Party, in her testimony
before the Congressional Reapportionment Commission this morning. I am
astounded that she would make such a baseless allegation.

"Specifically, Ms. Cook said, 'The third example, that you're probably
aware of, is that we now have a President of the Maine Senate who
records constituents' phone calls without their consent, and indeed
without even announcing as insurance companies do, that the call will
be recorded. The consequence of that is intimidation of constituents so
they do not call, or certainly not as much as they usually would.'

"Moments later, she said, 'Shame on lawmakers who record constituents'
phone calls to intimidate them and make them fearful of voicing their
opinion.'

"I am furious with this slanderous and apparently politically-motivated
accusation by the Secretary of the Maine Democratic Party. I have never
recorded a phone call from anyone - ever."

If you record a call without letting anyone know you are doing it. How are you intimidating them?

Senate president calls for apology for ‘scurrilous’ accusations
By Eric Russell, BDN Staff

Ben Grant, chairman of the Maine Democratic Party, stressed Tuesday afternoon that Cook was speaking as an individual and not on behalf of the party.

“To be perfectly honest, we were completely caught off guard by the comments made by Susan today,” Grant said. “Regardless of who she was speaking on behalf of, our party values facts and honesty, which is why we are looking into her accusations and we will deal with this accordingly.”

I believe this was the woman who stood up at a townhall meeting in Newcastle last spring and introduced herself as "Secretary of the Maine Democratic Party." In a feeble attempt at "gotcha," she asked the governor what books he had read lately. He answered and she and her party looked foolish.

Apparently the fact that her testimony was being recorded didn't make her fearful of expressing her opinion.

'Personal attack' sparks Maine GOP chief's call for resignation
Comments by the state Democratic Party's secretary prompt a call for her resignation.

AUGUSTA — ...snip

Cook, of Bath...accused Senate President Kevin Raye, R-Perry, of recording phone calls from constituents.

"The Senate president records calls in an effort to intimidate voters," she said.

Raye, reached on his cellphone, said that's not true.

"I have never recorded a phone call in my life," he said. "I'm not even sure how one would do that. It's a very strange accusation and frankly, I'm furious. It's slanderous and politically motivated.

I love this double standard. If a member of the State's Republican Committee had done a similar thing Republicans would be pounded right now. Maine Republicans, including Governor LePage, need to take a stand against this double standard and demand this woman resign immediately. If I were the Governor I would refuse to meet with any Democrat party leader, elected or representative, until this happens. It is time for Maine Republicans to take a page out of Governor Christie's play book and start demanding Democrats hold their own as accountable as them demand Republicans do.

Opinion

Susan Cook Is A Lunatic
By: Matthew Gagnon Date: August 24, 2011

...snip

Susan Cook...gave a rambling, incoherent speech about the virtues of the Democratic plan and the evil of those horrible Republicans, trying to abuse their power.
...snip

...Her accusation...boiled down to Raye recording constituents, without consent and without announcing he is recording, as a way of intimidating them ...from calling him in the future.

I’m going to go ahead and assume that Cook’s accusations have no proof and are either an invention of her imagination, or of some fringe leftists she hangs around.

Cool. As someone else said, the district boundaries are completely arbitrary to begin with.

I'm glad to know that fair share has his hands in this; that should help things go smoothly.

Is he still teaching those classes on how to get your tax rebate?

Ms. Cook is in the leadership of the Democrat party. She's one of their best and brightest.

I suppose when she has an idea, a CFL pops up on top of her sweet little head.

That would explain a lot Mel, since it takes those damn CFL's awhile to reach full brightness.

I got a kick out of the gum chomping gentleman in the back of the room, doing his best Fonzie imitation.

Those CFL's accompanying bright ideas explain a lot. The mercury from the CFL's has seeped into her brain causing episodic temporary derangement.
