TO CASINOSNO! CAMPAIGN KICKOFFPORTLAND "“ Gov. John Baldacci will be the featured guest at a major fundraiser for CasinosNO! next month hosted by more than two-dozen prominent Maine people who are opposed to gambling casinos in Maine. The fundraiser will be the kickoff event for the effort by CasinosNo! to defeat the November referendum to legalize casino gambling, and represents the initial fundraising event for the group that is growing in strength and support. "No one is more concerned about economic development in this state than Gov. Baldacci," said James Bartlett, spokesman for CasinosNO!, "and no one is more convinced that a big Las Vegas casino in Maine is the wrong way to go. We are proud and grateful to have his leadership in working to defeat this terrible proposal to bring gambling casinos and the problems that come with them to Maine." The host committee for the April 10th event is comprised of a diverse group of Maine people, including business leaders, health care professionals, political officials and members of Maine's arts community. "They are joining with us because they are convinced a big gambling casino will destroy Maine's quality of life and worldwide reputation as a clean, relatively crime-free state," Bartlett said. "They also know that the casino interests are going to spend millions of dollars to try and turn Maine into Atlantic City, and it's going to take a lot of support and contributions from Maine people to prevent it."The fundraiser, which is expected to raise close to $30,000 for the campaign, will be held Thursday April 10th at the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport.
