Snow piles up, paralyzing nation's capital

By Associated Press
February 06, 2010 6:32 AM

WASHINGTON - A blizzard battered the Mid-Atlantic region on Saturday, quickly dumping large amounts of snow on that piled up on roadways and toppled trees onto apartment buildings and cars.

Officials urged people to huddle at home for the weekend, out of the way of crews trying to keep up with a storm that forecasters said could be the biggest for the nation's capital in modern history.

A record 2½ feet or more was predicted for Washington.

Seriously, it's not that I feel no sorrow for those harmed by the storm, but it has to be admitted - when DC Government cannot function As Usual, it's good for the rest of us.

'Snowmageddon' blankets Mid-Atlantic in heavy snow

By JESSICA GRESKO
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Mid-Atlantic residents were buried Saturday from a likely record-setting blizzard the president jokingly called "Snowmageddon," ...

The snow was falling too quickly in the nation's capital for crews to keep up, and officials begged residents to stay home and out of the way so that roads might be cleared in time for everyone to return to work Monday.

I've had a trip planned to Philly and DC for a few weeks now, and for some reason, had planned to drive this time instead of fly. As much as I hate that drive, it appears I made the right choice. I'm curious to see how much progress they've made cleaning this up by the time I get there. A heads up to Philly, I am headed your way today and tomorrow.

Wish me luck, I'm going in!

Okay, having driven from Maine to just north of Philly, I have to wonder just WHAT THE HECK they have been complaining about regarding snow. WHERE IS IT ALL? Granted, I am ten miles north of the city and tomorrow I hit a wall of snow in town, but folks, I think someone's playing a trick on us.

Tomorrow night, DC. They're saying more snow is coming to them? SHOW ME THE SNOW!

Supposed to be another 20" in the next day or so...I think God is pissed with the Corrupt Congress and is punishing them.

Yeah, I am seeing my appts. in Philly today and returning northward. I imagine my Boston visits will be unaffected by the snow flurries. I'll try DC again next week, if it's still on the map.

Another 20" of snow in DC? Why, it's MORE great news for all Americans! Maybe Congress will have to abandon its earmarking for another whole week!

Maybe DC measures their snow totals just like they handle everything else.... inflated!

The issue down there is the lack of equipment and know how. Years ago when I worked in Philadelphia, a storm which would be cleared within a half-day in Maine would have consequences there for three or four days. Basically they clear the main highways but many residential and secondary streets don't see a plow for 24 to 48 hours. With the middle class flight to the suburbs, commerce would be crippled if they couldn't commute so the major arteries get the attention. Besides, they're charged usurious city income tax on their earnings and it is about the only service from which they benefit directly. If those major streets weren't the primary focus, they'd clamor to move their businesses to suburban locations, shriveling the city tax base further.

If someone has a person to plow their driveway, it is only cleared if the owner of the pick-up can get down the unplowed public street! It is not uncommon down there for drivers to just leave their cars in the middle of the snow on the street and walk away! Some find it more convenient to pay the tow and impounding fee when they come to clear the street than to wait in their cars or pay for emergency road service which won't be able to reach them due to the unplowed streets.

I recall our first winter in Maine. A good Nor'easter would hit but the kids still had school. According to news reports, we got it worse here than the mid-Atlantic states. Yet their girlfriends from south Jersey would call and be astounded because New Jersey had a school snow day and Maine schools were in session.

A friend who worked for years on Capitol Hill said he was always amused that two inches of snow in DC produced 30 percent absentees with the callers bemoaning that they couldn't get in because of weather.

With that mindset in place, Vic, one can only imagine the horror and angst at an actual 2 feet of snow. They must truly think the world is ending.

Vic Berardelli said, "I recall our first winter in Maine. A good Nor'easter would hit..." Nor'easter is not a Maine term but from somewhere farther south, maybe New Jersey. In Maine dialect, r's are not emphasized as in the contraction nor'easter. A Mainer would say Nawtheastah, no r's at all.

The reason being, of course, that r's are too expensive. Living in Maine, we can't afford those expensive, over-used letters, and so we're stuck with the more obscure w's and h's, instead.

Imagine being stuck in your house with little or no food because you go out to eat or call for delivery. Glad they know how to take care of me. Sure would have been fun to have a snow machine to ride around town on.

Agreed - saw a news report last night about a DC family with no heat or power, who were going to stay with neighbors because their house was down to 45 degrees inside... and of course they had no backup generator, kerosene heater, or plans for an outage. Wait until the pipes burst....

Another major storm headed to snowy Mid-Atlantic

By BRETT ZONGKER
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Snow blew across the Midwest Tuesday on track for the hard-hit Mid-Atlantic region, where federal government offices were closed for a second straight day and utility workers struggled to restore power..
...snip

Powerful winds and snow were expected to hit Mid-Atlantic states by the afternoon, and could leave as much as 20 inches of new snow in Washington and 18 inches near Philadelphia ...

Parts of the region were already buried under nearly 3 feet.

Contrast that to the self-sufficiency north of the border. Years ago a major blizzard hit Montreal. As the visiting team was already in the hotel across the street from the Forum, the game was going to be played, even if nobody could show up. At the drop of the puck, there were 13,000 people inside. A photo showed the street outside lined with parked snowmobiles and the lobby of the arena was lined with cross-country skis belonging to fans who transported themselves that way to get to the game.

Actually, it's a well-known fact that Maine generously donated 2/3 of her "R's" to New York and New Jersey so they'd be able to pronounce "warter" as in "Waiter, I'd like a bottle of your famous Poland Warter."

This benevolence, of course, prompted by the fact that NYC waitrons are notoriously (and naturally) warty.

Mike: When I lived in New Jersey, I learned that Hudson County needed the R's to pronounce what you cook with and what lubricates the motor. "Check the earl, please."

Talk about dropping R's. I remember a girl from Massachusetts once asking me if I was "going to the potty." I thought that was a rather personal question and ignored her until she replied, "But everybody will be there. When Jerry and Marge throw a potty it's lots of fun."

"Check the earl, please."

So said the Queen, reclining on her festively upholstered armchair, in front of the roaring fire....

Having spent the day in Philly, and talking to people in DC, they truly are in panic mode. Amazing. I made it back up here to Connecticut for the night, it might not be Maine but I know they have snowplows and they aren't afraid to use them.

Safe is relative. Today I have to navigate Connecticut and downtown Boston. All sorts of opportunities for mayhem there!
