The measure still faces an uncertain fate. It was passed as an amendment to a defense bill, and the survival of the hate-crime legislation will depend on the political currents that carry the underlying bill to President Obama's desk.

also known as the pedophile protection act.

Traci - the law has nothing to do with sexual predators or offenders. That may be your personal opinion, but it's not representative of the law's actual content.

Thank you.

As I said, you're welcome to your personal opinion, but AMG is not in the business of misinformation presented as fact.

Where have I given my personal opinion?? Do a search for Pedophile Protection Act and you will not see me as author of any of those articles. the act has become known as the pedohile protection act due to the fact that democrats refused to add a definition that would exclude paraphilias from being protected under sexual orientation......for some people their sexual orientation IS pedophile in nature. I do not think it was too much to ask to have it and other paraphilias excluded from protection. that is my opinion......the FACT that it wasnt is just that... a fact.

From the article linked in the first post:

The legislation, named the Matthew Shepard Act after the gay University of Wyoming student beaten to death in 1998, would impose longer prison sentences for offenses motivated by gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.

It also would make it easier for federal prosecutors to pursue hate-crime charges when local authorities do not.

so you have no issue with sexual orientation not being defined? I do not think (my opinion) that it was too much of a stretch to ask that it be defined. Heck marriage has been defined on a federal level why not sexual orientation...we see that phrase alot. I think (my opinion) it should be defined.

I am tacking this current, ongoing thread, "Hate Crimes Bill Not What You Think", to this thread for the very reason the exchanges on this current thread illustrate.
Those who have not done background research on this bill from the beginning, and have kept up with all the proposed amendments will be hoodwinked into thinking this bill has nothing to do with protecting sexual predators such as pedophiles.

Traci G is NOT MISREPRESENTING THIS BILL and the proposed amendment(s) which have been shot down.
