Treasurer grills director about travel expenses

........Poliquin asked Executive Director Robert Lenna why he and others flew to New York last fall and spent $4,000 on meals and $4,600 for four people to spend two nights in a hotel.

Poliquin asked Lenna why he couldn't conduct closings in the bond bank conference room in Augusta and get take-out from the Wendy's down the street.

"I don't eat at Wendy's," Lenna said. "You are absolutely wrong, and I resent the implication that I'm somehow wasting money."

Interesting leadership shown here. Inorder to make a team work you need to spend a few hundred on dinner? Granted any meal in NY is costly, there is more to be dug up here.

Notice how Lenna changes it to "a few hundred" as the cost of doing such business...........when the actual meals were in the thousands.
I'd be embarassed too, if I were him.

At least he didn't try and blame it on Bush. It looks like we are just scratching the surface on what has been going on and if 19% Mitchell had been elected it would still be going on.

Yet another hard working, dedicated public employee. He and Violette should get together . Between the two of them they must know the all most expensive eateries.

Still trying to figure out how many people went to dinner for 2K? Did they just drink a lot? Or did they buy gift cards to use at a later date?

The majority of pubic agencies only reimburse meals at the per diem rates. Any expenses above the going per diem is out of pocket. Not every public employee lives a lavish lifestyle on the backs of the tax payers. This may be a policy issue with the Maine Municipal Bond Bank, something that can be changed relatively quickly.

Poor Mr. Lenna can't be lowered to eat at Wendy's like us poor, ignorant folk. See, some of us HAVE to eat at Wendy's because the people who work for us make far more than we do, plus they spend our money like drunken Sailors. Sound familiar? Well, thanks to the last election there is a "new Sheriff in town" and his fiscal posse is shaking the last several decades of "Vote Democrat, shut your mouth and look the other way."

You can tell a lot about someone by the way they order on someone else's tab. Most descent people order light where the "entitlement" people order extravagant meals and waste amazing amounts of others money, only to look or feel superior.

Thank God that Bruce Polquin is looking into these deep, dark, formerly forbidden places that Democrats built as a money maze and have been abused for years. If you are one of these wasteful people you better get your resume polished up. You may not lower yourself to eat at Wendy's but you just may need to work at one with that attitude while holding our wallet.

Let’s hope that the administration make the necessary announcements to the general public about how they are spending the people’s money wisely. There is a bonanza of good publicity available to them as they dismantle 30 years of malfeasance.

Who exactly were the 4 people who got in on this 2 day extraganza?

It would be quite interesting to know as lot of taxpayer money has been spent on, shall we say, "entertainment" before now.

And the elite class always believes these things are their "entitlement".

In my humble opinion, anyone who would do this does not belong working for the public.

I've eaten at Ruth's Chris and Morton's, the latter twice in recent years. It cost me around $100 a person. It would be impossible to reach the numbers shown without buying $500 a bottle wine and such.

The attitudes revealed are disgusting, shameful, and worthy of penance in the public stocks.

This is the same crap that says you can't possibly cut 1% out of a buget that has grown by 25% in two years, etc.

Criminality of the absolute worst kind.....with a public imprimatur.

Wire brush the whole bureaucracy; these folks can't be the only ones.

Scum, pimps, parasites, addicts, pushers.

It's another good example of how the political and bureaucratic elite are out of touch with the people who foot the bill.
Mr Lenna resents being questioned on his expenditures ..... and God forbid he had to eat what the great unwashed do.

A perfect example of Takers and Makers. As one who has eaten in many fancy restaurants on a company tab I never saw one go over a couple of hundred for 4 people. But over the years I have noticed that many order the very best when they know it is being covered by the expense account. They are indeed the Takers and ought to be loathed by those of us picking up the tab.

STS, that list is very revealing. It is also disgusting. Lenna's mistake was that he didn't contribute to the LePage candidacy (just joking). Imagine what other outrages have, and are, occuring in the bureaucracy. I wish Bruce Poliquin best of luck in his researches.

I suspect many voters would be outraged if they saw the list of Mr. Lenna's political donations (along with his menu choices), but chances are very small the list will get much, if any, ink. This just isn't the sort of story that holds much appeal to mural-focused Maine news outlets these days. However, a good way to force the issue is through letters to the editor. If the letters generate enough interest, reluctant editors will have to recognize the story.

The meal and hotel tab makes $60,000 for a mural look, well, reasonable by comparison.

At least the mural memorialized the expense whereas the meal tab was a blip on an audit trail that some would probably rather keep in the books and not in the “light of day” (so to speak).

Go to http://www.maine.gov

Search for anything containing the word Department, Bureau, Division, Commission or Office.

With on-line services like GotoMeeting.com which can display all the data on remote computer screens and face-to-face conversation via Skype, why should they even have to travel? How long does the face-to-face business take? It seems most of the budget and time is for transportation, hotel and meals which could be curtailed easily using such on-line services. Businesses tighten their belts by cutting out travel and using these services. I'm a member of the National Committee of one organization which does its business by conference call with the data displayed on the computer and we get a lot accomplished in an hour or two. But, then, we can go back to our regular activities locally. Colleges even offer interactive remote courses so students don't lose a whole day traveling roundtrip just to take a two hour class. Why should state agencies be any different? If they're in it for the junkets then they don't belong there.
