John Frary has compiled a list of the 9 Characteristics of Fascism. Let's see how the Dems rate, shall we?
1. Exalts the collective over the individual.
Check
2. Disdain for Property Rights
Check
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause, e.g., Ultra-conservatives, the Religious Right, KBR, Big Oil, Big Pharma, Corporate Interests.
Check
3. Supremacy of the Central Government
Check
4.. Controlled Mass Media, e.g., NYT, NPR, WaPo, Hollyweird, et al.
Check
5.. Corporate Power Subordinated to the State
Check
6. Labor Power Associated with the State
Check
7. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption, e.g., Chicago, Mass., Detroit, Kansas City, Baltimore, Washington, DC.
Check
8. Fraudulent Elections, e.g., Chicago, Baltimore, Kansas City, Hudson County, NJ, Camden, NJ, ACORN, etc.
Check
9. Obsession with Charismatic Leaders

Yup. Works for me.

Any list that omits mention of #9 is odd. Every fascist movement I ever hear of had its Fuehrer, Duce, Poglavnik, Conducator, or Lider Maximo (OOOPs, that would be Castro. How could he be a fascist?)

I am sorry, but the dems fail test 1 and 4 and they only are concerned about national security when they can use the issue to attack their political enemies. Number 11 is not disdain for but use of...the rest fits.

To me, the two elements of fascism that are most dangerous to our constitutional republic are:

Obsession with a charismatic leader solidifies a political majority based more on the platform of that leader and his party than on constitutional principles.
and
Industry exists to advance the goals of that leader and/or the state, subordinating property rights, enforcement of contracts, individual action, and voluntary exchange to the will of the leader and his majority.

Substitute a variable for "industry" above: financial institutions; automakers; medical care providers; insurance carriers; energy companies; and so on.

I bet Al Gore's list has lot's of Government disdain and abuse of the environment in his top ten, and Clinton's focuses on Governments interference in personal and private life.....

Making lists is delitefully entertaining....think I'll make a list my top characteristics of behaviors of machiavellism.
