Support governor candidate of choice, without belittling others
Kay Rand
Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel 02/06/2010

Like the majority of Mainers...not enrolled in a party and even many who are, I suspect...I share uneasiness over the conservative social agenda of the [GOP] right-wing...and the liberal fiscal agenda of the [Democrat] left wing...

Cutler embodies all that is good about Maine people -- an engaging intellect, a hard-working no nonsense approach to solving problems, and a deep and personal caring about the future of our great state.

Kay Rand is former chief of staff for Maine independent Gov. Angus King.

Oy.

What a weird article. She spends 95% of the print space talking about other candidates... then squeezes in a few words of support for Cutler at the very end.

Does Cutler have a lot of money? If so, Rand is the right person to spend it for him and give him a real shot at the Blaine house.

I agree with Naran. Just plain weird.

Hardly anyone knows Cutler. If Rand wanted to help him, she could have used her space to talk about him.

Instead, she seemed to want to tell everyone how important she is because she knows everyone running for Governor.

I remember a liberal fiscal policy afixed to King's wing.

Perhaps she doesn't say much because there isn't much to say.

Cutler is against local governance?
Cutler railed against the state Board of Environmental Protection, comprised of citizens charged with issuing building permits, among other tasks. He said the citizens usually have "no expertise" and bring "an agenda" to their decision-making, ultimately hurting businesses.

"It's ridiculous," he said. "We don't need this stuff anymore."

I think it is a stretch to call the BEP a "local governance" committee. Its not your local planning board, its made up of political appointments from around the state.

TM- I recognize he was talking about state appointees but the argument he uses could just as easily apply to members of the local conservation commission, zoning board, planning board or board of selectmen. People who get appointed or elected to these positions usually do not know as much about the issues that they are tasked with regulating as those who directly impact from those regulations.

It's clear that Cutler is a Recovering Democrat. He could be big trouble if the GOP comes up with a weak nominee.

HER JOB in the article was to tear down the Dems, hoisting them on their own petard. Positive doesn't work, but negative sticks.
