Kevin Scott Running for Governor as ‘Citizen Candidate’
Urges Increased Independent Representation in Government
ANDOVER – Independent candidate for Governor Kevin Scott recognizes that 35% of the voters in Maine are registered as “unenrolled,” not committed to either of the two major political parties. Unenrolled voters are the largest voting bloc in Maine, yet with only one or two unenrolled or independent legislators serving in Augusta in any given session, the independent voter is also the least represented voter in Maine. This needs to change.
The vast majority of Maine voters do not have a voice in the State Legislature, in effect making them the vast minority. The result is that a growing number of Maine people feel disenfranchised from the process.
Independent for Governor Kevin Scott is determined to address this issue. Scott will work to ensure that the majority of Maine voters, those who are independent like him, have the support and encouragement they need to run for, and win election to the Legislature. Michael Pajak, who managed Bill Beardsley’s campaign for the Republican nomination, is onboard to manage Kevin Scott’s campaign. “Kevin brings a perspective to the race that encourages innovative, insightful, fiscally responsible “Outside-the-Party” ideas that promise to bring sound public policy to the pressing problems we share. We need to balance the State budget, create incentives for business in Maine, remove barriers to success and streamline regulations. We need to nurture an environment where individuals and companies can start bringing jobs back to Maine’s small towns. We need to preserve the fabric of Maine’s historically strong communities by providing young Mainers a reason to stay in Maine,” said Pajak.
“The divisive system of Party politics has brought Maine and the nation to its economic knees,” continued Pajak. “In this race we have one Party candidate who has helped craft Maine’s current financial crisis, one Party candidate who seems more capable of dividing than uniting Maine people, and one candidate who is emerging from decades as an adviser to one of the two major Parties,” Pajak continued. “Kevin Scott is the ‘Citizen Candidate’ who is offering the independent Maine voter an independent option on November’s ballot.”
A native of Rumford and an advocate for Maine’s small towns, Scott says, “The individual tax-paying citizen of Maine has been buffeted by the ideological arguments emanating from Party headquarters in Washington, DC. If we are going to turn Maine around, we need to turn the equation around. Local government, made up of individuals with ties to their community who are independent of Party ideology need to drive Maine’s agenda, not the National or State Parties. That system is clearly not working for the average Mainer.”
Candidate for Governor Kevin Scott and his wife Susan live in Andover, Maine where they serve on local government committees. Kevin is a graduate of George Mason University with a degree in Government and Politics and currently serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Andover Water District. His campaign website is http://www.mainesbestchoice.com/.
Wack job.
How so, Dan?
No Money + No Name Recognition + No Organization + Thinks He Can Be Governor = Wack Job.
Why is Beardsley's former campaign manager working for this non-entity?
Why is Beardsley's former campaign manager working for this non-entity?
I'm not sure, but his doing so will make me take another, closer look at Scott. As a non-entity myself, he should appeal to my clannish self-interest.
The Billings endorsement ("wack job") should also help him, as it did LePage.
(a tip to the person who draws Mr. Billing's name in the AMG Secret Santa pool this year: he really, really could use a new Thesaurus for Political Pejoratives).
I love how people attacked Paul when he made one spelling mistake in his press release but nobody has a problem with Scott randomly capitalizing Words in the middle of a Sentence.
Also - unenrolled voters are a plurality of Maine voters, not a "vast majority" of anything.
francisz: I never called Paul LePage a wack job. I wrote that many of his primary supporters were wack jobs. Big difference.
I just listened to Michelle's interview with Scott. He doesn't seem like a wack job to me. He seems like the only candidate with a plan. He made me think twice about November. We will see how he does from now till then.
Yeah, tossing around words like "wack-job" about Scott does seem a bit out of character for Dan. It does rather make his criticisms of some of the frothing lunacy of his fellow LePage supporters seem a tad hypocritical. Not exactly his normal level of intelligent discourse now is it?
Personally I admire anyone who gets off their arse and runs for something. Whatever party or political inclination it might come from. To run for governor and actually put the time in like Scott & Moody is admirable and should not be treated with scorn.

I agree with you on this Andrew.
I am not seeing anything for Kevin Scott but am seeing lawn signs and bumper stickers for Shawn Moody. I saw 5 lawn sings for Moody within 5 miles of my house last sunday and started seeing bumper stickers on hte highway. I don't thing he will come close to winning but will start showing up in the polls if all the names are in it. I look at all the canidate sites on facebook and there is under 200 fans for Kevin Scott while Shawn Moody I believe is around 1200 and growing quickly. Cutler is around 2000 fan, Libby is close to 3000 and Lepage has over 4500 fans.
How is this guy any different than Moody? They are both outsiders who want to reform, but Moody has money, organization and some name ID through his company.
Why on earth would an Independent vote for this guy over Moody?
What issue is he hoping to bring tot he forefront? The 32 hour work week? If he was running to make that point he might have some sense. But with no money to properly promote it, the MSEA will make certain the idea never sees the light of day.
His candidacy makes no sense.
It really seems like he is only running to hear himself talk and see his name on the ballot.
These candidates are very important to the Left. Without them, there's no stopping LePage. If they flourish, the Leftist elites could still get Libby in. Cutler isn't catching on at all yet, and takes most of his support from Libby. Since it is an incontestable fact that neither of these guys can win, the question becomes "who do they hurt"? Although Scott and Moody are both pro abortion, pro gay social liberals, and don't espouse any major cuts in government spending, they are NOT going to draw from Libby, the ultimate liberal insider. They are after "outsider votes" in a year of volcanic voter unrest. The only person whose votes they could conceivably cut into is LePage.
The electorate, or at least a certain percentage of them, are stupid enough to fall for this, thus electing Baldacci in a skirt.
That's why you'll see favorable posts about them on AMG from people who wish to defeat LePage. Those who want a Republican Governor but don't want this particular Republican as Governor are playing a dangerous game. There may never be another opportunity to elect a Republican Governor, especially a moderate conservative Republican Governor, in Maine.
No one is perfect. Those who obsess about LePage's character flaws, and they are real, should do a little research on the character flaws of his opponents. On public policy pronouncements, LePage stands head and shoulders above the rest of the field. Time to circle the wagons. I'll be happy to kvetch about Paul, AFTER I can be certain I will not be scalped by another Dem administration.
Kevin is a smart man with alot of energy. With his new campaign manager in place, this race just got a bit more interesting.
It's true that Kevin lacks deep pockets, but no one is going to out work him.
His drug testing people on welfare is a great idea and would save an incredible amount of money too.
Yes, yes if you talk about anyone but the anointed one you are helping the left. The same ole' thing that is dragged out every time around to stifle debate, the discussion of ideas and anything other than praising O.... um I mean Lepage.
You might consider LePage a "moderate Conservative" but no one else does. Not even people who support him do. Most of the strongest supporters of LePage I talk to both in the tea party movement and outside of it like him because he isn't moderate.
Last I checked the left had a very strong independent candidate called Cutler. The guy is getting the papers backing him and lots of free press. I think writing Cutler off now is big mistake.
Thrasybulus - What is a "moderate conservative Republican?"
What is a "moderate conservative Republican?"
It's the same as a sort of tall midget?
Oh, I'm sorry. I thought it was a riddle. Never mind.
For most voters this campaign really doesn't start until September so there is still time for Scott to raise name recognition, articulate his issues etc, he's behind in this area no question but there is time.
I think Dan's point about no name recognition and (to date) no money has validity but the fact he managed to get on the ballot pretty much with the assistance of one other person is a testament to his work ethic, the fact he hired a campaign manager evidences he is serious about his campaign, it also may mean there may be some resources available - he, like all of the candidates except Libby Mitchell, has to come up with the money. The next campaign finance report is the 42-Day Pre-General Report on September 21, 2010, he has until then to either raise the money needed for a credible campaign or kick in his own money like the other 3 traditionally financed candidates all have to varying degrees.
No one in the General has yet shown what I would call fund-raising strength - although Paul's last report looked promising. Like it or not money is going to be needed and spent, it's not impossible to actually raise $1,000,000 between now and election day - at $750 it's 1,335 donors, at $500 it's 2,000 donors, at $250 it's 4,000 donors, and at $100 it's 10,000 donors. Yes times are tough and it would require a lot of focus on a campaign's behalf but if you took the 7 weeks between now and the 42 day pre-general report, one could make a dent in that goal.
It will be interesting to see how things develop.
Personally a candidate's stand on social issues is still important, Pro-Life is non-negotiable, fortunately there is a candidate still in the race who fits the bill.
That would be Peter Mills, Bob.
I stand by my wack-job assessment. He has no background for the job, has no organization, and no money. Jim Longley and Angus King were both well known when they ran and King had lots of money. Neither faced two other Independents with money.
To me Scott running for Governor is like Doug Thomas running for President. Doug is a credible guy. He has been a good State Representative and will be a good State Senator. He has been successful with his business. But if he decided to run for President, I would say he was nuts. Scott running for Governor is like Doug running for President. (I mean no offense to Doug. I am just using him as an example of a quality person who would be overreaching to run for a certain office -- just like Scott is overreaching with his candidacy.)
Is it really possible that nobody here knows what a moderate conservative is? It would be a person respectful of religion and tradition, but not sectarian in public. Who has some principals he or she will not compromise on, and others they would be willing to settle for half a loaf on. (With Reagan, the former would include overthrowing the Soviet Union and reviving the economy, the latter would include immigration reform and tax reform).
In short, someone who really wants to implement certain policies, is willing to prioritize them, and doesn't demonize the opposition. Makes alliances where they can, always moves in the same direction, but knows they will not get there on Day 1. Almost exactly what LePage did in Waterville.
I know a lot of conservatives who thought Reagan was too soft. And a lot of conservatives believe LePage is the sort of fanatic they have been waiting for. A look at the actual record will show them the truth. Paul and Ronnie both have/had moderate and libertarian and conservative views. I know some here may be pining away for Martin Luther or Joseph de Maistre or Robert Welch, but it ain't happening.
As for LePage being "the anointed one", the Republican primary electorate anointed him with a landslide victory. That is what anointed means - "chosen". In a two party system, which the United States has always had, that means that those who reject the primary voters' choice are supporting the other party.
Since the other party are socialist proponents of the nanny state, and all that that implies, one would have to be absolutely certain that the pro-liberty candidate was completely unfit for public office to offer aid and comfort to the socialists. Are Mike Pajak, Dolly and Andrew absolutely certain that Paul LePage is unfit for public office, to the extent that they are willing to see a socialist as Governor?
And to think, we have a Republican leading in the polls for the first time in 20 years, and there is still a remnant of anti-statists unwilling to support him? Very strange.
I believe the number sending in signatures in support of Scott was a total of 15 or 16, including some family members. I do know from a conversation with him that the addresses of those sending in signatures were: Auburn, Lewiston, New Sweden, Bar Harbor, Farmington and others - seems like maybe some more reach that people are aware of.
Did anyone see his parade appearances in Lisbon or Fort Fairfield? - far superior numbers to Cutler and no Moody at either event.
Someone today who was at the MMA interview, who contacted me, said "wow", a candidate with details, and a plan.
But, no denying it, he needs money. hey Dan, are you sending in a contribution?
Rumor is he sat with a few Commissioners for informational meetings recently.
And to think, we have a Republican leading in the polls for the first time in 20 years, and there is still a remnant of anti-statists unwilling to support him? Very strange.
Not strange....EXPECTED is the word you need...LePage rocked the GOP when he won so big...Abbott was supposed to be the winner...He had all the establishment endorsements , the most money , ect. , ect.Hell , he even had me convinced the outcome was a forgone conclusion..You didn't think they would take this lying down did you ??? LePage must be stopped and the take over of the GOP by the un-washed masses pushed back , even if it means 4 years of Libby....IMHO...
Did anyone see his parade appearances in Lisbon or Fort Fairfield? - far superior numbers to Cutler and no Moody at either event.
That is completely false. I was in Lisbon. Scott had 5 people. Cutler had 30 to 40. In fact Cutler had more people for him than the entire Democrat contingent.
I think Dan is being kind calling him a wack job. How is he any better than Phillip Morris Napier?
He's better dressed? :)
Getting people to donate money to a campain is a lot more difficult if they don't think you can win. So, IMO, if he's going to start fund raising he's going to have to kick in some serious money to make it look like donating to his campain wouldn't just be throwing money in a hole.
It's possible he's not really even expecting to win this election. Maybe there's a longer range plan.. run this time and get a little name recognition, move out of Andover to a bigger town and get elected to something to prove he can actually work with people to get things done (and get a little ego stroke now just as a bonus). Having a degree in government and having "ideas" doesn't prove you can lead people.
Interesting details on Mr. Scott's background. Looks like my assessment was correct. Someone who has filed three different protection from harassment actions without winning any has problems.
Interesting article, ruffling a few feathers can be a good sign of trying to get something done or could be a sign of a whack job. I think the former. There may be a place for Keving Scott I just don't think he is qualified to be governor or has a snowball chance in hell of ever winning it.
Perhaps he is vying for a position in the PUC.
Someone who has filed three different protection from harassment actions without winning any has problems.
The faithful AMG reader might recall that we had death threats, had our home vandalized, and had our online newspaper declared a "threat to the community" by the more corrupt -- and now gone -- members of our town council.
You might also remember my anguished posts here after the employee of one counselor physically threatened me after a council meeting in the chamber, prompting me to get a TRO. He prevailed at the subsequent hearing, primarily because we could not afford an attorney, and he had the town attorney's office defend him.
And you might even recall that the newspaper article about that hearing made the front page, above-the-fold article which had one sentence about the TRO and the rest of the article, which continued on a second page, was strictly about my drug and alcohol use, more than 16 years old at that time, inasmuch as I have been clean and sober for more than 21 years.
That, of course, backfired, but not until we lost just about every material thing that we had, and I got to watch my husband's anguish as my character was dragged through the mill, water hoses were emptied into our oil tank, and our advertisers were called personally by members of the town council to warn them about advertising with us.
So, I said all that to say this:
The profile I just read -- including Dan's diagnosis based on filing TROs -- makes me like him even more, makes me more sure of his ability to stand on principles he knows to be right, and indicates to me that he is the "street fighter" in this race.

Street fighters do not run to the courts when they don't get their way. This makes me think that Kevin Scott has no problem dishing it out, but has a very hard time taking it when it is dished to him.

Wack job.
I think all the candidates are citizens, except maybe Cutler.
