Hello all... I'm new here! I follow education news here in Maine, and nationwide (I am a teacher, but not a union member!).

So, without further ado, here's my first contribution!

Announced via Maine Association for Charter Schools Facebook page:

Governor LePage will sign LD 1553 into law on Wednesday, June 29th at 11:15 am in the Hall of Flags. We'll be meeting there starting at 10:45am, before the signing ceremony. Please come and join us! Children are welcome!

Well HOO-RAH!!! Better late than never.

This will drive the Human Secularist Communist inspired NEA Union thugs into fits of apoplexy, which will be marvelously fun to watch!

Of course we can expect that they will not take this threat to their virtual monopoly over the indoctrination, brainwashing and mind control over the Proletariat Children of Maine's mere Peasantry lying down.

I fully expect another "People's Veto" attempt to overturn this reform and if that does not work they will start shopping around for sympathetic Courts which will impose an injunction against it and tie it up in litigation and appeals for years. The left never seems to lack for money and Lawyers.

Moonbats are all for "Democracy" you know.... as long as it works to their advantage, that is.

What I really want is School vouchers so that Taxpayers can CHOOSE how their kids are educated.

It seems that the only thing parents are allowed any "choice" in is with abortion. Once you let the little rascal live and get born though, the almighty State takes them over from there.
I don't think that our Founders had such a dictatorial system at all in mind when they came up with "Public Education", do you?

**************
Now that I'm off the soapbox...

Ahoy and welcome aboard, Mate! Hang on tight and enjoy the ride!
Thanks for your contribution to the AMG community and we'll be looking forward to hearing from you again!.

It's about time! I'm hoping to start a charter school so this is good news. That little rant about secular humanist unionizers is a bit of wishful thinking. Unions are organizing in charter schools around the country and there is no evidence that charter schools will (or can) break away from secularism. The school I (and others) are planning is all about improved outcomes through technology- the connected student. Yes, that means smart phones, tablets and internet. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/27/education/27charter.html

If smart phones, tablets and internet produced improved outcomes our kids in Maine would all be geniuses.

Critics warn that charter schools operate outside state and federal mandates, so their quality is suspect.

Yes state and federal mandates have worked so well. The only reason to be in favor of this is it gets rid of some mandates. This may improve education for a few, but this society is so FUBAR, there won't be any stunning results.

There are swarms of posters on the big media sites in Maine, most of them totally opposed to charter schools.

I've read all of the objections to charter schools in these comment sections, and they all amount to some variant of "You should go where you're told to go, you should do what you're told to do, you should pay what you're told to pay, and besides! this personal freedom extended to you by the State will move the trough 3 inches further from my snout! How dare you!"

With statist attitudes like this, it will be a long slow crawl back to freedom.

Correct. Let's not forget the computer labs, laptops, Smart Boards, and all the other techie bells and whistles we've been financing for some years. Our IT department is now stumping to have 1:1 computing for all high school students, since the middle school has that ratio, and gosh, how can we "go backwards"?

The Kennebec Journal
Charter school panel defies LePage
By Susan McMillansmcmillan@mainetoday.com
Staff Writer 6/15/12

AUGUSTA -- ...Maine Charter School Commission will not consider two applications to open virtual charter schools this fall....

...commissioners [will] hold the applications for Maine Virtual Academy and Maine Connections Academy for the 2013-14 cycle because of concerns about school governance and quality.

The virtual charter schools have been proposed by newly formed nonprofit organizations that would contract with for-profit education service providers -- to provide the curriculum.., educational software, hire/train teachers and administer the schools.

[Peter Mills is connected with Maine Virtual Academy, Ruth Summers to Maine Connections Academy.]

Too little and too late. As soon as the Progressives get back in this will all be undone.
