Lewiston/Auburn Merger

So... On my regular trip over to Maine this month to fleece a few more pine-staters, I happened to notice that the L/A Merger debate is heating up.

20 years ago, I proposed this idea to many people, only to have most people poo poo it..

The concept? Why do you need, two city admins, two police chiefs, two fire chiefs, two school superintendents, etc, etc, etc...

Not being over there I have not heard, nor followed the debate... Nor have I seen anything here.

So let's here from the greater L/A squawk box crowd... for or against.

I asked a couple people over there what they thought.... What I got was Lewiston needs Auburn to rescue it.

What say you AMG crowd?

How much do you think taxes

How much do you think taxes would go down because of a merger?

Good chance they would not.

Good chance they would not. Someone is going to take over duties that are double what they had, chances are they would expect to be compensated fro the increase in duties.
These consolidation schemes tend to be nice fantasies with results not meeting expectations. Regionalization can work and has proven succesful in areas where services didn't exsist before or areas out grew services.

Taxes don't go down.

Taxes don't go down.
For whatever reason, taxes don't go down.
If you believe that consolidation will save money, see my first sentence.
My little town, a few years ago, under the guidance of a Baldacci inspired town manager decided to take on the book keeping for two other tiny towns.
These towns are so small that they should be de-organized, but the legislature has made that virtually impossible.
All went well until it came to crunch time about the end of December when the budget was being done.
All of a sudden, we need an extra person to help for a couple of months.
Then, those couple of months became a permanent position.
We've been through three town managers since that first consolidation and each one cited the increased workload of looking after three towns as the reason for leaving.
As far as I'm concerned, you can take your dreams of consolidation and stick em where the sun don't shine because you will NEVER make taxes go down.
EVER!

As an Auburn resident, I'm

As an Auburn resident, I'm voting no. Minimal if any savings, and the 'new' name is to be "Lewiston-Auburn". The area really needs to dispel the "Dirty Lew" image. The name should be something totally different. Then I might of considered it.

All the wages/benefits of Auburn union contracts (police, fire, public works, teachers, etc.) are lower than Lewiston. If the merger occurred, I think it would more likely for the Auburn employees to get raises to match Lewiston personnel than vice-versa.

Ben Chin as Mayor of the

Ben Chin as Mayor of the merged cities would instantly increase his street cred.

And Maine would reap media attention you can't buy.

What's not to like? For us who don't live there, that is.

The new name should be Great

The new name should be Great Falls... Who wants to go to Lewiston-Auburn?

Lewiston will always be Lewiston and Auburn will always be Auburn...

To prove this, a part of Auburn burned to the ground 100 years ago and they named that part of town New Auburn... It hasn't been new for a long time, but the name persists.

Auburn has some really good people leading it. At the top of the list is APD Chief Phil Crowell. I'd be curious to find out his feelings on this plan.

I thought Bob McDonald was still the Mayor in Lewiston?

"What say you AMG crowd?"

"What say you AMG crowd?"

There is a strong movement toward consolidation in Maine. It is in towns, school districts and counties. The end goal is single payer medical care, single payer education and single payer highway maintenance. Towns would become irrelevant despite Maine's home rule law. You all remember home rule, right?

I'm all for group purchases of such things as school bus tires, but initiatives like the tyrannical Common Core should be resisted wherever they rear their ugly heads.

This is perhaps the first

This is perhaps the first thing we have ever agreed upon U-Haul. The yes campaign has been horrific. Most of their ads feature the typical chamber of commerce types. No blue-collar, no average joe. I predict 75% No vote.

The Yes campaign has been

The Yes campaign has been significantly mismanaged and I truly hope those running the show aren't collecting a paycheck. BY election day pro merger forces will have spent almost $500,000 to force the issue down the throats of a community that has no interest in the merger. The community has rallied behind those of us at COLAC (Coalition Opposed to Lewiston Auburn Consolidation) and we have their support, but pro merger forces call us Groundhogs or the Mayberry RFD crowd or as I was called today "Thuglicans". And through it all they provide running commentary of better representation and power in Augusta, better economic growth and other soundbites but have yet to give one point proving any of those would occur.

What about 2,000 new jobs,

What about 2,000 new jobs, millions more for schools, millions to offset property taxes, and millions to help the elderly and disabled?

Not to mention vastly increased tourism?
