Bean store to close soon

By Doug Fletcher, Staff Writer

LEWISTON - It was nice while it lasted.

The temporary L.L. Bean factory store that opened in November in the old Ames Store off East Avenue will be gone next month.

"We are closing in five more weeks," Rich Donaldson, a spokesman for the iconic outdoor outfitter, said late last week.

It isn't that the Freeport-based retailer didn't find business satisfactory. "We've been pleased with the result of our sale" at the Lewiston store, Donaldson said.

Rather, right from the beginning the outlet store was intended to be a three-month sensation.

As I recall, they (LLB) did the same thing here in Augusta several years ago. They opened a temporary store for a few months in a vacant building that had originally housed a warehouse club (whose name I forget).

Must be a ploy to get rid of the items that don't sell well enough at the flagship store, or the outlet in Freeport.

I have been very disappointed in the way LL has gone from sturdy, reliable goods to the more trendy "home and garden club" items in recent years. If I wanted to shop at Bed & Bath, I could go to any cookie cutter mall.

Typical of large corporations. We are pleased to have you help us succeed but tomorrow when we don't need you,,,,who are you? They needed extra space for the Christmas surge. It's over, ,, move on.

Companies open temporary stores in NY and LA to pick up a trendy vibe among the beautiful people. Nothing says beautiful, trendy and outdoors like a closed Ames in Lewiston.

I didn't even know they had the store, and I live here.

They also did a quicky temp store back on Marginal Way in Portland back in 1990.

When I saw the headline, I thought it meant that they were closing their Lewiston call center. That would have been very big and very bad news.

As noted, this store was always intended to be temporary.

I went several times... not a great selection of items, unless you want a gray fleece pullover. They had hundreds of those.

Some great deals on used sea kayaks as well.

It was great they rented out the place for a few months. Hope they come back again soon.
