Proposal Would Have Doors Swing Out, Not In

BOSTON -- If Bellingham resident Douglas Flavin has his way, all public bathroom doors in Massachusetts will open outward, not inward.
The Legislature's Committee on State Administration and Regulatory Oversight reviewed the bill Wednesday. State Rep. James Vallee (D-Franklin) filed the bill on Flavin's behalf.
A law would be a bit much, but it is a peeve of mine. What's the percentage of men who actually was their hands after doing their business? Thirty percent? The handle of a public restroom door is probably the dirtiest implement in an establishment.
Some of us are highly adept at using a shirt tail, or our elbows, to open said swinging doors. Amazing what can be accomplished, no matter which way the door opens.
:)
In addition to this being a waste of taxpayer dollars for the time to consider the changes, you have to wonder if the change if/when imposed ("imposed" term used on purpose) would be in conflict with fire egress codes which "generally" state that doors not open into hallways (which "most" bathrooms are located in) so as not to block or impede exiting routes in an emergency...
CUZ.
coming soon,,,,push button bathroom doors that drop into the floor ! 8)
A representative for the state Department of Public Safety told the newspaper that the state building code does not specify the direction public bathroom doors must open.
It would certainly be more user friendly if the STALL doors opened outward, instead of inward.
