Mid-week report from Rangeley

Arrived at the state park Sunday afternoon; of 51 sites only 7 were occupied. Two more left yesterday and only one new arrival today. The weather, until today, has been dismal. I would think in a bad economy, more people would be camping in relatively inexpensive state parks. Downtown was like a ghost town; the merchants have to be hurting. Took the boat out a couple times each day since Sunday. Have only seen two other boats running on the lake.
So, is it the weather? I thought campers would be able to hack some cool temps, scattered T-storms and clouds; or is it the economy? A combination. It would be interesting to see attendance data at state parks. It seems to be on the decline. We're heading to Lily Bay July 31. Will be interesting to see what's going on there.
BTW, gotta love the new ADA bathrooms at Rangeley Lake State Park. Talk about your brick sh..houses. Price tage is reportedly $250,000 and was closed for a few days because of poor water pressure. It's a monstrosity, 10 private rooms, each with a shower, bench, GFI outlets. A bit overkill in my opinion and ruins the charm of the place, especuially the heavy steel doors and aphsalt parking lot, complete with two ADA parking spaces. Seriously, do that many disabled people stay at state campgrounds????
A wednesday trip up Rt1 thru York Beach was a eye opener. Alot of people on Beach, alot of vacancy signs where there should be none. A few signs advertizing off season rates and low rates!!
I think it is a combination of weather and the new no smoking law...The State runs those stupid public service ads constantly on the radio (the bear and moose one) belittling smokers and telling them to stay away and guess what ??? They are by the looks...Sometimes you get what you're asking for....Breath easy , you're in Maine...LOL...
Must be the construction on RT 4 on the way to Rangeley is the culprit. I have a camp in Sandy River Plantation and havent been to stay overnite yet. Too much to do on the farm, so little time
I was "downtown" Freeport last weekend. Usually during a weekend in the summer the place is packed to the eyeballs. Compared to how I expected to see it, it seemed like a ghost town.
I think we're in for (1) bad economic news, and (2) lousy sales tax receipts.

You'd have to be dedicated to want to go stay in a tent this summer.. it's one thing to have a shower come up when you can count on it every day.. (IMO more than a day loses it's charm). You'd think the land yachts (sp) would still be sailing.
