I do not believe I have met young Mr. Bowen, but if his enthusiasm is half that of the young people I met who helped with the election in 2004, then it is three times that of most of the eligible voters I know, work and live with here in Maine.Maintain your enthusiasm, Brent. We look forward to having you join the ranks of the voting class. (And the even smaller class of thinking voters!) Remember the words of GK Chesterton, who in 1922 observed, "The unconscious democracy of America is a very fine thing. It is a true and deep and instinctive assumption of the equality of citizens, which even voting and elections have not destroyed."
Brent, make that into a bumper sticker and I will buy one. Heck, I will buy 2, one for me and one I will personally give to my (R)senator who voted YES.[ 07-29-2005: Message edited by: AnnS ]
People being screwed out of their money by Enron (the flying E), now the administration of the state of Maine doing the same to its citizens is how I take it.
I am going to Signworks monday morning. This will be proudly displayed on the rear glass of my pickup cap very soon. Brent, I hope you don't mind and should you wish to profit from this bumper sticker idea, I will certainly send folk your way. Won't this PO the liberal elites, the Intelligensia, and the unwashed at UMF every time I cruise down Main St in Farmington! Perfect!

Sorry I'm behind the curve, but that still doesn't make sense to me and I doubt it will to most others. Take-off on Enron? Never saw the Enron thing to begin with.I'm not trying to discourage Brent, or anyone else, but I doubt the general public would get it.[ 07-30-2005: Message edited by: Country ]
I think to compare Maine to Enron borders on the ridiculous. Enron was corporate fraud to inflate shareholder value. Are you saying that someone in the Baldacci Administration is committing fraud? You may disagree with what Baldacci has done but this type of attack is why Baldacci will win in 2006. Brent, do you know what a common stock is?[ 07-30-2005: Message edited by: thefletch ]

I can imagine that young Mr. Bowen has had that many Finance classes to understand what even happened at Enron. It is another example of why you don't want hyperactive 17 year olds spinning out of control about subject matters they really do not understand. Why don't you Photoshop Baldacci's head on a World Wrestler, it is just as foolish and makes as much sense as your Enron/Maine effort to be creative.[ 07-30-2005: Message edited by: thefletch ]

That doesn't sound too specific Chuck. Republicans shouldn't be throwing around accusations unless we have black and white facts to back them up. How the heck is Dirigo fraudulent? How is Cashman's efforts fraudulent? This is conspiracy type of stuff that isn't true. We have to stick to the issues and not go down these types of roads if we are to have any chance next November.
Brent, Your more right than you know. I've been told Maine has to keep two sets of books. One it let's the public see, and another to comply with national accounting standards. Those standards don't allow taking spending items off budget. Then there's the debt we hear about once in a while, our General Obligation Bonds, but they're only a small fraction of the state's total obligations. Does anyone know how much it's going to cost to keep our promise to retirees for their health insurance? Or what the debt is for all the new schools we've built, and who's legally responsible to pay it off?A corporate executive would go to jail for bookkeeping like this. Keep up the good work, your better informed than most twice your age.

Hey everyone,Sorry I havn't replied to anyone's comments. I got this weekend off from work (and subsequently i'm taking time off from paying off our state's debt), and I just now found the time to come back to the computer. What was meant by the "state seal" is that Governor Baldacci has engaged in enron-like accounting schemes. There is a service called "Cafe Press" that allows you to create custom products, such as bumper stickers and t-shirts. Unfortunately, I don't have the money to sell these. If anyone else wants to help out, or wants to take it upon themselves to make them, feel free (just give me credit!). www.cafepress.com--Fletch, I find it disheartening that you do not value my opinion because of my age. You'll soon find out that young people's opinions do count. There has been an awakening of young people who feel that our state has gone in the wrong direction. Ignore us if you wish, but you'll soon find out how much power we have. Need I remind you that Pres Bush won the youth demographic vote in Maine? The tide is turning my friend...
Brent, please explain the Enron-like accounting schemes that Baldacci has been involved in.
Let's see, Enron somehow "lost" their employee's benefits and screwed the stockholders. Let's see, Maine DHS somehow "lost" millions of dollars and are screwing the taxpayers, for one example. On another issue, I heard a couple of days ago that the sales tax will be going up to 6%. I was told this by this district's rep, a Democrat whom I normally do not speak to. I had not heard this before he mentioned it. He was actually proud to share this info with my husband and I. Seriously, how much more money do they think they can get out of the people of this state?
The Democrats can raise the sales tax. Than can raise your income tax. They can do anything they want because they rule us. The only question is how many Republicans will vote with them. "Me too. Me too." Too many Republicans in the legislature like a bunch of kindergarteners seeking approval from those in authority.
I think the Democrats game plan is to grab all they can while the getting is good; bankrupt the state co-incidently with the "federally induced recession"(see G. Cummings - econonomics extrodinaire) and then blame the Republicans.
If the repubs are holding the governorship and a majority at the time so much the better. If any Republican wins and is faced with making the hard and painful decisions necessary to salvage anything here well, frankly the timing couldn't be better- for Democrats! As far as the shananigans going on, all I'll say is stay tuned folks.
Lets just hope the lid is ripped off of this cesspool of willful negligence, incompetence and fiscal and financial malfeasance BEFORE the election.

Yes. I am not willing to follow these random conspiracy theories and do not believe that this is a good place to start the discussion from when we talk about where Maine is going, who we want leading, etc. Here is the difference and why comparing Maine to Enron is not accurate. When Enron started to unravel, a large majority of everyone involved realized what was happening and acknowledged it. The only people that are alleging that Baldacci committed fraud are a small group of Republicans.
