Faced with a clamor in his party for stricter gun control in the wake of the Colorado movie-theater massacre, President Obama said Wednesday night he would “leave no stone unturned” in seeking new measures to reduce violence nationwide, including more restrictive background checks on gun purchases

When I read the story earlier the thing that crossed my mind was that Obama pretty much has free reign to fire up his base with another core authoritarian statist issue that Romney has no credibility to draw a contrast and cast himself as a legitimate alternative to wake up liberty minded voters.

What's Romney's possible position? That he banned guns and magazines in Massachusetts but he only did it because it's OK at the state level but not federal?

David Codrea's commentary on debate #2 (link)

Quote:
Obama acknowledged his desire to resurrect the ban, falsely equating firearms with cosmetic similarities to military firearms as “weapons designed for soldiers [that] don’t belong on our streets,” repeating the standard anti-gunner ploy of conflating automatic weapons with the semi-automatic variants that was originated to confuse the public by the Violence Policy Center. Obama also let slip another target of interest that has long been a goal of gun-banners with his reference to “cheap handguns.”

I caught both of those references Jeff. I was half expecting him to bring back the term, "Saturday night special."

I suppose it's a calculated risk on his part to throw a bone to his base. I can't see how it can do anything but hurt his chances in places like Virginia and Ohio. My guess is that they're counting on the old "nobody needs these to kill Bambi's daddy" scam. I don't think they understand that the continued boom in firearms sales is being fueled by new shooters whose primary interest is self defense and the shooting sports. The firearms they're buying are the one's he's threatening to ban... semi-automatic magazine fed rifles and concealed carry handguns.
