One in ten children "born gay", or so they say!

My wife spends some time, most days, on facebook as that has become quite a nice thing for her to be able to keep up with some of her friends, past and present, as well as to make new ones.
She has seen a rise in gay activism on facebook and we have discussed this somewhat. A Rutgers University Student was recently filmed in his dorm room in a homosexual encounter, which was streamed on the internet by his roomates. The student, being despondent about this event, which, no doubt was a terrible thing for his roomates to have done, committed suicide by jumping off the Geo Washington Bridge to his death. A very sad even in anyones book.
A couple of days ago word circulated on facebook, from numerous sources, that 6 gay "children" had committed suicide in the last month. I googled this and checked out numerous sources. It is difficult to find genuine unbiased news when most all of the sources were gay oriented websites. One source I did find indicated one young man, who was gay, committed suicide, but according to his brother, not because he was gay. It is almost impossible for me to verify the statement that 6 gay children committed suicide last month.
Today it is: "One in ten children are born gay". just made as a flat statement, from various sources again. I have long been interested in just how much of a part genetics plays in this and have researced it a bit when I have the chance. My wife and I have numerous gay friends and acquaintences, whose stories we know personally, and from this personal knowledge, can see events in their lives that likely may have contributed to them being gay today. Not saying genetics have no place in it, just saying that we don't believe that it is just genetics.
I just read of a study done in Sweden of 7600 identical twins. Identical twins are of course genetically identical. There were may instances where identical twins had different sexual orientations. So many that the folks conducting the study concluded that one could not possibly say that genetics alone was a cause.
Wikepedia contains a wealth of information on various studies done HERE
I do not write any of this in the interst of putting anyone down. In fact the purpose behind my writing has to do primarily with what I see as the rise of gay activism in Maine, particularly since the vote to rescind the gay marriage law. I have pondered, and am pondering, the reasons behind the increase in the activism, and the long term effects of said activism.
Like I said my wife and I have some friends who are gay and know many others. Though we are bothered somewhat by some aspects of this we cannot bring ourselves to despise anyone because of it. We feel there may be a judgement day some day, but it not up to us to be that judge. So we treat people we know as we would like to be treated, always.
We believe there are tens of thousands of Mainers who feel the same way, who are willing to live and let live, and have felt that for a long time.
However we sense that the rise in gay activism that we believe we are seeing is in direct response to the negative vote on gay marriage. We also feel that the continuing in-your-face activisme that we are seeing almost daily will, in the long run have the opposite effect for its proponents.
Both of us suspect that many people who,. previously been willing to be very acceptive of gays, may be turned off by this extreme activism. We believe that we all ought to be able to live our lives peacefully, regardless of orientation. But we suspect that the onslaught of in-the-face activism like we are seeing, done perhaps in the hope that gay marriage will pass next time, may in the long run have just the opposite effect.
We feel that the leaders of the activism we are seeing must not be too politically astute or they might realize that sometimes this kind of activity can end up having the opposite effect.
Re the "one in ten children born gay comment", advocacy groups these days have a habit of making up facts when the need em. Look at the golbal warming "facts".
Nevertheless I am always looking for new soruces of good science on this topic and many others, that is if there is any good science left anymore.
WC
Birth order, exposure to hormones in the womb, genetic predisposition, and social atmosphere, etc, all play a role. Which is why blanket judgments about the entire question are bogus.
As for social atmosphere, there is some evidence that 33% of people may have a genetic predisposition to lefthandedness, but as far back as we can measure, the incidence of lefthandedness is about 10% (except in societies where it is completely suppressed). This is pure social pressure, which may be why we see spectacles like candidates for state office leaving their spouse and children for another same sex partner. Something just snapped, and it is hard not to feel sorry for all those involved.
As far back as I can remember liberals have been telling us that Barbie and all these model on TV has promoted an unhealthy body image and caused men to be attracted to women with large breasts and small waists. We hear TV is the cause of this and the culture needs to change because we men are being brainwashed into being attracted to an image created by the media.
Now, ALL OF A SUDDEN, people are pre-ordained to be attracted to certain things.
Which is it?
It must be great to be able to just say whatever you want never having to answer to your own hypocrisy and double standard.
Self-will run riot.
I was born an alcoholic.
I was quite happy being a drunk for nearly 20 years. Then I realized that it was not good for me to be drunk all the time. It was bad for my daughter, for my family, for those who loved me, and most of all, it was making me miserable.
In 1988, I stopped giving in to my urge to drink, drug, and generally do things which caused me problems fitting into society.
Alcoholics DO commit suicide. And there are statistics that prove that. In fact, alcoholism is one of the top "reasons" for suicide.
I'm not seeing a lot of "in your face" activism to let alcoholics who were born that way to drink and drive, to be neglectful parents, or to change the laws so that people have to hire and rent to people who are drunk.
Self-will run riot.
I don't care who anyone is attracted to. You are free, in this country, to do what you want about it. And I am free, in this country, to believe it is wrong. So, why don't you do what you want, quietly, and I will object to what what I believe is wrong, quietly.
I don't care who anyone sleeps with. Just leave me out of the process. Don't try to drag me into what my own conscience tells me is wrong.
I can make up a bunch of fake statistics too, but I wouldn't feel right about it.
How can anyone possibly have any idea how many people were "born gay" when science itself is not sure that being born gay is even something that happens?
The origins of "gayness" will likely be debated for decades.
Here's what's not open to debate - simple, human compassion, respect and understanding is just the right thing to do.
The tragic death of that college kid wouldn't have likely happened if his partner had been a female. His roommates probably wouldn't have bothered to use a webcam, ending his life, and effectively destroying their own.
If sending a post on Facebook asking for compassion, respect and understanding is "activism," I plead guilty.
Suicide is always a tragedy. The reasons for suicide are almost impossible to determine. The college student in question may have committed suicide because he was gay and was "outed". He may have done it because his "lover" betrayed him. Maybe because he was ashamed of his behavior. Maybe because he was hungover, etc.
No one honestly knows and speculation seems insensitive. Using it to advance a cause is shameful, no matter what that cause might be.
As for 1 in 10 being born gay - hogwash!
"She has seen a rise in gay activism on facebook and we have discussed this somewhat"
Not a function of Facebook but a function of your wife's friends postings.
Check out the latest national Pew Poll "Fewer than half of Americans oppose gay marriage, poll finds".
You'll find the fat lady singing on the back of the stage and she is taking her time coming out to be heard. Most of us hear her.
If you don't want in in your face, dump your gay friends or unsubscribe.
Gay marriage will pass in no longer than 5 years.
Are pedophiles born with the predisposition to be sexually attracted to young boys or girls? Is NAMBLA next? Just asking; the logic is consistent.
Without redefining the word there is no such thing as gay marriage. Invent a new word and I am all for it and don't really care if it is nature or nurture or some combination of both. But to credit genetics for choices that are made carried to its logical conclusion would legitimize any behavior.
The recap:
Gays are like drunks, and oggling Barbie is healthy. Got it.
Good grief . . .
Gay marriage will pass in no longer than 5 years.
Really Chris? How? 42 out of 50 states, including Maine, have already voted down gay marriage. Since the liberals are going to permanently lose their congressional majorities in less than a month, the only way is for a group of activist judges is to give the middle finger to the people and say that they are legalizing it anyway.
You've got it backasswards Appolo.
It won't be legislators or judges. In time, it'll be the people's decision. And we find the next batch of voters will replace old ones.
The former being strongly in favor of and the latter being strongly opposed.
It's like moving weight on a boat.
Beyond that trend, the middle aged people are certainly shifting toward allowing gay marriage. It's just boring really.
Apollo,
The sides in most of these votes have only differed by six or eight percentage points. Solid political wins, sure, but not exactly representative.
Homosexuals have been seeking legitimacy since it has become popular to come out of the closet. I once witnessed a cow in a field perched on the back of another cow going through the motions as would a bull. I concluded that nature does have a way of producing mutants of one form or another and with the number of humans now in the billions that this same anonomly applies to two legged as well as four legged animals. Those who consider themselves different have now parlayed their differences, whether real or imagined, to garner special treatment. It is not surprising that many would imagine themselves as such to get on the bandwagon and gain their 15 minutes of fame. Minorities have been doing it for years.
The cow experience you talk about has an explanation.
I have been around a cow or two and it is quite common for a cow that is in heat, to mount another cow. One of my cows even tried to mount my 80 yr old grandmother one time. I don't think one can put too much significance in that.
WC
Now that they finally do feel safe enough to come out of the closet (and I know plenty who have not, AKA Rev.s Long and Haggard etc.), 1 in 10 sounds just about right.
Born that way or not, they are standing there right in front of you insisting it is safe for the rest of them to live in the world as everybody else does.
It is a damned shame there would be kids offing themselves. Because it won't be long.
On the contrary woodcanoe, threads like this just aren't the same without a little animal sex and pedophile reference.
Chris, I don't think you understand. Woodcanoe's cow must have been molested as a calf to present such behavior.
I gotta get off this thread . . .
I think you're on to something there , Matt.
It's interesting to juxtapose the confidence in new generations of voters allowing gay marriage to become legal, which I suppose is "normalized," with those same new voters setting the stage for Islamification of our country, and the imposition of Sharia.
Should make for a very interesting new generation of talk shows and polite public discourse.
Who will blink first?
Sharia? It just keeps getting better.
Mel, back in the day, did you blink when your generation allowed a black man to use the white crapper, or did you keep your eyes wide open?
Who will blink first?
Reminds me of the recent parade of overweight breasts in Farmington... In the course of poking around the coordinator's FB page I happened upon one of her FB "friends", a fellow UMFer, an out-of-the-closet lesbian who was also a convert to islam. She was lamenting that she could not participate in the parade of breasts because her "religion" forbade such public displays. I suppose it had yet to occur to her that her adopted lifestyle choice was also forbidden by her adopted religion.
If she is a lactose-intolerant vegetarian I suppose that would be like hitting the victimhood trifecta.
[Hey, matt, took quite a while to play the race card on this thread... great exercising of restraint!]
Makes sense the Farmington parade comes to your mind.
Doing research there Disturbist or just a lurker?
Dist--
Not nearly as impressive as you making a connection to global warming in post #2. Good work!
Sorry my own parallel is not up to snuff. Blink.
Au contraire, Matt. Your parallel is just the grade of snuff the world has come to expect from a post-modern relativist, and is on par with Coose's analytical skills. Keep up the moderate work! When all reasoning people die off in accordance with Coose's ultimate plan, you'll no doubt move to the head of the class.
The tragic death of that college kid wouldn't have likely happened if his partner had been a female.
Not sure what information you base that on, but Perez Hilton is very vocally saying the opposite.
We agree entirely on the issue of compassion.
We agree entirely on the issue of compassion.
Which brings to mind this piece: There is a proper response to the dilemma posed by same-sex attraction, one that does not abandon truth out of a false sense of compassion.
1 in 10? LOL. Statistics: the mathematical theory of ignorance.
Some food for thought...
"Although not supported by the research, many therapists believe that homosexuality is solely biological in nature, and therefore unchangeable. Yet despite ongoing efforts, researchers have not discovered a biological basis for same-sex attractions. In fact, many researchers hypothesize that a homosexual orientation stems from a combination of biological and environmental factors."
Homosexuality 101: What Every Therapist, Parent, And Homosexual Should Know
I am just wondering how they prove it?
Gays are like drunks...
No. You missed the point entirely.
My point is that if one accepts that gays are "born that way" -- and that's a huge leap, since genetics would indicate that we would have FEWER people "born that way," not more -- but if one accepts that premise, it is obvious that we do not have to ACT on our urges.
So the excuse is a lame one.
I am responsible for what I do, not what I feel like doing.

Nice post, WC. The dearth of proof suggests the one-in-ten myth is propagated for political reasons, and belongs to the same junk science category that global warmists have been found guilty of fabricating. Were there any legitimate scientific standing for the behavior, the discovery of such evidence would be front page news and Nobel Prize material. Same as if there were actually any real-life instances of discrimination, i.e., partners not being allowed visitation rights or joint property ownership or any other of the false arguments used during the assault on marriage, those, too, would be front page news. They aren't because they do not exit.
The intellectual dishonesty exhibited by homosexual activists and their appeasers is of titanic proportions. The social pressures applied at-large to acquiesce to their demands of acceptance and full endorsement have been frighteningly successful.
Existing information could lead one to conclude that homosexual behavior is to genetics what islam is to religion.
