From NSSF Bullets Points:

HUNTING WRITER CRITICIZED . . . Longtime Outdoor Life hunting editor Jim Zumbo today is enduring the wrath of gun owners and industry following Zumbo's weekend blog entry on hunting with military-style firearms. Zumbo had opined that "terrorist weapons" have no place in hunting and that hunters should distance themselves from such imagery. He quickly apologized, but Remington withdrew its Zumbo sponsorship and Outdoor Life has taken down the Zumbo blog because of its controversy. "Jim's comments are as unfortunate as they are inappropriate," said NSSF president Doug Painter. "No one should divide firearms into good-gun, bad-gun categories."

Kudos for the companies that dropped him like a hot potato. The last thing we need are people "who just don't get it" to be running their mouth pretending to speak for the gun owning community and saying stupid lies like that. Those misguided, BS spewing sessions do more damage to Amendment 2 than Ethan Strimling could ever pray for. Bye-bye Zumbo.

Some of the finest people not only of the shooting community, but the nation as a whole, regularly compete with ARs in Civilian Marksmanship Program sanctioned matches such as the Excellence In Competition events and yearly at Camp Perry. To even insinuate that their activities are in any way related to terrorism is disgraceful. I posted a polite message on Mr. Zumbo's site pointing this out. He should be ashamed of himself.

Yes, I hunt with it. It's a coyote getter. And if Mr. Coyote is too far away for my Mini-14 I'll use my Maxi-14. ;-)
Do you hunt with it?
Hunt what?

I'll answer anyway.....Yes.

An AR-15, Mini-14 and AK47 in their semiautomatic configurations are no different (I'll type it slow for the people who are not "gun people") N-O D-I-F-F-E-R-E-N-T than any other legal rifle, no matter if it is marketed for target shooting, hunting, self-defense, competition, counter-sniper, etc.

They ALL function the same and the cosmetic features have nothing to do with the function, rate of fire, accuracy or stopping power. All chambered in the same caliber, a Remington is a Browning, is a Colt, is a Ruger is a Kalashnikov. The name and furniture mean nothing.

If Zumbo is too stupid to know this, especially with his years of firearms exposure, it is time to put him out to pasture. This whole issue can only possibly be due to one of two things; Either the man is so old and sheltered that his "modern" 100-year-old rolling block is as "new fangled" as he has studied, or he is simply loosing his marbles. Either way it is time to wave Bye-Bye IMHO.

What is the point behind this question? Does whether he hunts with it or not have any bearing on the appropriateness of Zumbo's remarks?

But, when talking about this, we should all remember not to get drawn into the false argumment that firearms must have a sporting purpose.

This is a little lie that is creeping into society, and evidently into Mr. Zumbo's mind, like a virus.

We need to remember and remind others that the Second Amendment is not about hunting.

Spot On, and that is coming from a hunter. While I may not choose an AR 15 for hunting, I'd choose something more powerful, I am going to buy one for self defense (about perfect for that role) and in case we need to form that militia the 2nd Amendment talks about - "Being necessary to the security of a free State"!

Who knows, the way things are going with the balkanization/polerization of this country (read - illegal aliens and their liberal supporters), we may even have a civil war or rebellion some day.

Agreed, knucklehead. Guns are guns. As Bigshooter points out, this guy's blunder is inexcusable. He has been brainwashed by the unrelenting liberal attack on gun owners. He has been compromised and at this point needs to be put to pasture.

What is discomforting is that this guy has made a living off using and writing about guns for nearly forty years. Yet even he was susceptible to the gun control rhetoric. What hope can we have for the generation born into a society where the distinction between "sporting" guns and "assault weapons" is accepted and emphasized?

My Maverick 88 12 g loaded with 1 birdshot round and 4 buckshot rounds is not a "sporting gun".

It is a "Positive Home Security System".

I like the tone of this thread. I always get very uncomfortable when people start trying to articulate their own particular need for firearms. United we stand, divided we fall.

The second amendment isn't about "sporting" firearms. It is about the feds (and states) not having a monopoly on force, and about keeping the King of England outta your face.

Well, this didn't take long. I think someone mentioned that this was the biggest threat from Zumbo's diarrhea of the mouth but I am not sure. Thanks alot Zumbo. Enjoy your retirement. Dumbass.

From Sarah Brady's Blog:

Even Remington's top gun writer agrees on Assault Weapons

With important writers such as this on our side, it is clear that we have a cultural imperative to remove dangerous terrorist rifles from our streets, and our woods.

Jim Zumbo is a writer for the prestigious Outdoor Life magazine and represents the views of America's true sportsmen. He is also sponsored by Remington.

I have several AK 47's that I have built from parts. Except for the fact that they are not selective fire they would fit many people's ideas of what an assault rifle is.

I love them. I have been a long time admirer of the Kalisnakov rifles and happen to think that the design is the best light infantry weapon ever devised, bar none. The fact that nearly 100 million have been produced over 60 years and that many variants are in daily use on battlefields around the world is testimony enough to their capabilities.

No, I do not hunt with them.. I like building and shooting something I created from a pile of parts.

They are excellent defensive weapons and that is the role they will play if Sarah Brady's minions come and try to take em from me........just like our forefathers intended.

Statement from Outdoor Life
Due to the controversy surrounding Jim Zumbo’s recent postings, Outdoor Life has decided to
discontinue the “Hunting With Zumbo” blog for the time being. Outdoor Life has always been,
and will always be, a steadfast supporter of our Second Amendment rights, which do not make
distinctions based on the looks of the firearms we choose to own, shoot and take hunting.

Remington came on board pretty quick.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Remington to Sever Sponsorship Ties with Jim Zumbo

Madison, North Carolina – As a result of comments made by Mr. Jim Zumbo in recent postings on his blog site, Remington Arms Company, Inc., has severed all sponsorship ties with Mr. Zumbo effective immediately. While Mr. Zumbo is entitled to his opinions and has the constitutional right to freely express those opinions, these comments are solely his, and do not reflect the views of Remington.

“Remington has spent tens of millions of dollars defending our Second Amendment rights to privately own and possess firearms and we will continue to vigorously fight to protect these rights,” commented Tommy Millner, Remington’s CEO and President. “As hunters and shooters of all interest levels, we should strive to utilize this unfortunate occurrence to unite as a whole in support of our Second Amendment rights.”

We regret having to terminate our long-standing relationship with Mr. Zumbo, who is a well-respected writer and life-long hunter.

Rest assured that we haven't seen the last of the term "terrorist rifle". Should the left take the White House in '08, I have no doubt that they will try to paint the gun control issue in terms of terrorism/homeland security.

"..."sporting" firearms."

There ain't no such animal.

"Sporting" describes a certain mode of behavior. "Firearms" describes a certain type of technology. Some firearms are suited to certain modes of behavior, some are not. The Consitution is not concerned with modes of behavior, but, rather, motives for behavior. One can hunt rabbits with a Sherman tank; one can hunt Kodiaks with a lady's purse pistol.

Speak with any knowlegable gunsmith about "sporting firearms," or "assault rifles," and if you don't get laughed out of the shop, you'll receive as many definitions and exceptions as you have time to listen.

There is nothing more sacred than the "second"
unless it is the "first"! But that is of not much concern here is it?

While not agreeing with his terminology in this "blog" entry,
I don't suppose it is of any use to consider the point he might
have been attempting to make?

I am back,I had to take a break and watch news. That guy in Gaza with AK and funny
headress over his face marching in a parade, looks just like the deer hunters
I saw coming out woods last fall!

At times like all constituancies , on any issue ,the failure to even acknowledge a
possible point is a hindrance to getting people to see the point being advocated!

I want each of us to have as many weapons as one desires to do whatever is legally
permissable with them in a responsible manner! Along with that , however misguided
a view might be, one should look at how the unknowing view things in our world of instantaneous images
and how they make people think about n issue !

Nobody is calling on the government to censor him. The first amendment doesn't shield you from being reviled for something that you say.

I think I'll go replenish my turkey load with a fresh batch of Remington's and tell them why.
