My wife and I recently returned from a family visit in Toronto, where we had the great pleasure of seeing "The Phantom of the Opera" for the third time.

Early in the first act is an eerie scene which the vulnerable and innocent Christine is mesmerized by the Phantom, whom she believes to be her "angel of music." The Phantom, masked and elegantly robed, appears through a veil of smoke in her dressing room mirror.

Great letter Pem! But watch your back, these dastardly actors in Augusta are the villains in a play of reducing taxes as promised last fall. Here we are 3 whole months into the current session and we are no closer to tax relief than we were last November. I guess it is time to start another petition for TABOR. It will be harder but fortunately all these lies and smoke and mirrors that is coming out of Augusta will turn off a few more tens of thousand Mainers, and that is a good thing.

The only time that Maine people are safe is when the legislature is not in session!

I saw it in London with the original cast and then again a couple of years later with Lucille...great play...the DVD is also great.

Excellent column by Pem Schaeffer.
Watson and the majority have masqueraded as tax reformers for years. While doing so, they've raised taxes and fees by more than $1 billion during Gov. Baldacci's first term, overrun their LD 1 spending "caps," and propose to raise spending by 12 percent in the pending 2008-2009 budget.
I wish it were fiction; sadly, it's not.

Pem is a fantastic talent and has a keen grasp of the challenges we face in Maine.
