Congresswoman Chellie Pingree today applauded the historic passage of H. R. the American Clean Energy & Security Act of 2009.
“This bill will help create Maine-made and American-made solutions to our energy problems,” Pingree said. “It will help us break our dependence on foreign oil and help make us energy self-sufficient.”
Pingree said the Energy and Security Act would help build the clean energy industry in Maine, including wind, tidal and wood-based energy businesses.
“This bill helps get us back to doing what we do best--creating new and innovative technologies,” she said. “The best way to bring prosperity back to Maine is also the best way to end our dependence on foreign oil and protect the environment from global warming pollution.”
Environmental leaders singled out Pingree for her work to strengthen the bill. Earlier this month Pingree wrote a letter to House leadership asking them to improve sections of the bill relating to clean energy, new jobs in the clean energy industry and the continued regulation of pollution from coal-fired power plants. Approximately 50 House Members joined Pingree and signed her letter.
"Congresswoman Pingree took the lead in standing up to Big Oil and other polluters trying to kill this bill,” said Carl Pope, Executive Director of the Sierra Club. “We thank her for leading the charge to improve this bill in order to increase the number of clean energy jobs it will create, ramp up the pace of our transition to a clean energy future, and to make sure that it acts swiftly enough to avert the worst impacts of global warming.”
Here in Maine, Brownie Carson, Executive Director of the Natural Resources Council of Maine, also cited Pingree’s work on the bill.
“This historic legislation will help address one of our most urgent environmental priorities—global warming—and foster prosperity in Maine by advancing our renewable energy economy and reducing energy costs through energy efficiency,” Carson said. “We greatly appreciate the leadership provided by Congresswoman Pingree to make this bill as strong and effective as possible.”
