I looked for an existing thread for this, but it didn't quite fit into the "Police Good Shooting" thread.
Perhaps if he had shot the window out before rescuing the citizen, which would have been more dramatic, it would have fit, but that wasn't the case, so I've started a new thread.
Please feel free to post your good police stories here.
A local police officer is being credited with rescuing a Tremont man early Sunday morning by breaking the rear window of a burning car and pulling him to safety.

I'm waiting for [someone] to show up and say “the cop should have shot the guy. “
I mean, the guy could have caught on fire and then rushed the police officer and set him on fire, too.
Then the flaming perp could have careened around the neighborhood endangering the public - and even started a forest fire that could have caused untold death and destruction. And perhaps the citizen was arrested once, or got a traffic ticket, providing even more justification for just shooting the guy.
Safer for all if the cop just shot the fellow while he was in the burning car. At least then the officer would have been sure that he would go home safely that day.
Fortunately, as we see here, not all officers subscribe to that philosophy.

Sassaman called 911 for what looked like a head injury but quickly realized the real problem — her husband’s heart had stopped and he wasn’t breathing.
She administered CPR until two police officers arrived, and lucky for her husband, one already had four lifesaving medals to his credit.
“It is without question that Mr. Sassaman is standing with us here today, thank God, as a result of the work of these two men,” Martin said.

According to a retired police officer and author Norm Stamper, police departments across the country have been doing away with the slogan "To protect and serve" for social service-related slogans. I cant think of an example right now.
The slogan was part of the oth taken by all swarm Officers. It should be reiterated at every daily briefing.
Three Stonington police officers who formed a human chain to rescue a man from the frigid waters of the Pawcatuck River in the dark last year have received the medal of valor from the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association.
It was the first time a Stonington officer has received the award, which is given to officers who show heroism and bravery in circumstances in which they risk their lives to save others.
Police spoke with the suspect over a cellphone and a public address system, but as darkness fell, the standoff continued.
At 8 p.m., Delisle agreed to come outside where he was arrested and taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn.

The standoff on Washburn Avenue came to an end as police took 41-year-old Patrick Mullen into protective custody around 4:30 a.m.

Mullen has not been charged with any criminal offenses, but police hope to recoup the costs associated with the standoff. Capt. Ted Ross said he did not have an estimate of the costs.
"I do know it's significant," Ross said.

Hey, here's an idea. Next time I go to visit my client I'll pull up in a Ferrari. When he complains about the $50,000 bill, I'll just point to the fancy car! "Hey my costs are SIGNIFICANT!"
Anyway, good work by the police.
But, really, admit it. Those guys get all that fancy equipment to have fun, not to serve the population better.

His ballistic vest saved him from the 9mm that hit him in the chest. He shot the dirtbag crazy (yes, crazy) reclusive schizo dead. I have some personal experience with the implements saving lives of officers.
PS: Before the badguy had stopped breathing, they tried to patch up dirtbag crazy scum to save him. Good for them for trying. Good for Federal ammunition that it was lethally effective.

Perhaps citizens such as Seattle woodcarver John T. Williams should be issued ballistic vests as well. It would keep them from getting shot, too!
Police rescued a wet pup that fell into the frigid Hudson River Sunday.
Bodhi, a two-and-a-half-year-old Airedale Terrier, fell into the river while chasing a Frisbee near 13th and West streets about 4:10 p.m.

Before such vests were "issued", many LEOs used to purchase them with their own funds. Guns too. Ditto full auto guns. Ditto canines.
In Maine, it is legal for private citizens to own and use body armor. It therefore should be legal for cops to do so also. They are citizens, too.

I suppose the heart wants what the heart wants.
Nope, it's got to have treads. I don't want an SP or TD, either. I would go with an M-113 if I could find one cheap nowadays. Up to a couple of years ago you could get them for about $20,000 operational. Now all the US stuff is being bought up by the collectors and nouveau riche, you can't get a Sherman for less than a quarter million.

A woman who jumped from the International Speedway Bridge in Daytona Beach was rescued by Daytona Beach Police and Firefighters early Tuesday morning around 7:30 a.m as police and fire units were responding to calls about a distraught woman at the top of the bridge.
