Police Quell Attempted Riot By Oregon "Peace" Prot

LL, there were 2,000 ficken protesters there according to reports, so that is not a small amount. And in the same place last year there was an anti war protest that erupted in violence. The local authorities are only making judgements of these type of people based on past experience, and if the police hadn't been there you know there would have been trouble.I don't mind if the people protest - I really don't. They have a perfect right to. But what gets me angry about them is that many of the protests turn violent, with assaults on police, on members of the military, on passers by, vandalism, etc. just like we experienced here in Portland. And always under the guise of "marching for peace".Did you ever wonder why the riot police always show up at the "peace" rallys but the so called "pro war" flag or yellow ribbon rallies never have any problems?

Riot Police stand outside the Chiles Center on the campus of University of Portland, where U.S. President George W. Bush (news - web sites) appeared at a fundraising event, August 21, 2003. Bush faced protests Thursday as he traveled to Oregon and Washington to promote his environmental agenda and raise money for his re-election campaign. Kept at bay by riot police, the demonstrators shouted "shame on Bush" and waved signs denouncing the president's environmental and economic policies and the U.S. occupation of Iraq.[img]http://us.news1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/rids/20030821/i/1061505908.248306...

Police Quell Attempted Riot...So now protesting is called "rioting"? Was that a provision of the Patriot Act that I overlooked?

Protesters give similar message to Bush but in a more civil tone "But unlike the violent demonstration that greeted the president during his last Portland visit, the rally outside the $2,000-per-person Bush-Cheney 2004 fund-raising luncheon was hardly ugly. Despite 10 arrests and the use of pepper spray to clear a North Portland park, Portland police said, Thursday's four-hour protest during Bush's two-hour visit was fairly orderly. Protesters, some wearing Bush masks in the summer heat, chanted and waved signs. One read, "He lied, they died," and another declared, "My Apache helicopter killed your Iraqi honor student." There were several points where the gathering could have turned chaotic but didn't, police said. "[url=http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/front_page/1061...

I dunno - how comfortable are you with a president sending out black clad thugs to defend himself wherever he goes to shut up any dissent..Imagine if Clinton had done this, the headline would be:"Power mad Clinton sends out federal thugs to steal first amendment rights from reasonably protesting decent Americans - Clinton's hatred of American people reaches new low." That photo up there speaks a million words.Chris.

LL is always over the top. It would have been more productive to sene the storm troopers over to his place.

"I dunno - how comfortable are you with a president sending out black clad thugs to defend himself wherever he goes to shut up any dissent.."No where do I assert the cops are federal. But attributing assertions to others that are false is typical right wing methodology. And you're going to tell me the feds didn't discuss with and require the local police to have security out in force? You think the secret service really had no hand in the strong anti-dissent presence??Chris.
