The Press Herald-Chellie Pingree Fund: Wise Move?

Editor's Note: Setting aside the work involved - is it prudent for a newspaper to team up with a Member of Congress on fundraising efforts? Especially so during a campaign season which the same newspaper is allegedly covering objectively?

Maine Med rehab center to double in size
By Robert M. Cook
Mainebiz staff reporter
Yesterday

The rehabilitation center in the Barbara Bush wing at Maine Medical Center will get a little bigger and better thanks to the parents of a Falmouth teen who wanted to give back after doctors helped their child recover from a serious illness.

John Lamb, Maine Med's communications director, says the Herald-Pingree Fund, which is sponsored by the Portland Press Herald and U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, donated...$30,000 to make the...project a reality.

This is chump change for Pingree's boyfriend...Donald Sussman. Besides it would be nice for a change is his $$ went to help people who really need it as opposed to all of our referendums which he seems to have a major stake in judging by his donations.

It amazes me that the PPH or any newspaper in Maine won't do a story on Sussman and how his out of state dollars are influencing policy here. YES...I know he has a Maine address but you don't need to be a rocket scientist to see who's pulling the strings here....right Rochelle?

From a professional

From a professional standpoint, I find the merger of the newspaper and the politician quite vulgar, even if it is for charity. I don't recall them doing the same when Barbara Bush raised money for the Maine Medical Center children's wing. It would be appropriate for the newspaper to lead the fundraising and report that Pingree made a donation to their fund (as they've done with the John Roberts Fund at holiday time) but it is not appropriate -- in or out of an election year -- for the newspaper to be doing joint ventures with politicians. I don't fault Pingree on this one, she'd be foolish as an opportunistic politician not to seize advantage if they were stupid enough to offer.

Donald Sussman is very

Donald Sussman is very familiar to the old-timers on AMG. In 1997, when Gov. Angus King and Jonathan Carter were going after Maine's forest industry using the referendum process (and Mary Adams was there with a third option to promote the forest industry) - Mr. Sussman appeared at the 11th hour with major dollars which kept alive Carter's campaign.

That was when I first heard of Mr. Sussman.

Logging Debate in Maine Makes a Referendum Impenetrable
By CAREY GOLDBERG

The poll was taken before Mr. Carter's ''Vote No on 1'' committee suddenly took off last week, powered by donations of several hundred thousand dollars from a S. Donald Sussman, a businessman from Greenwich, Conn., who has a summer home in Maine.

UTU and Mary Adams defeated the COMPACT twice. The grass roots were energized then as never before. They are energized today even more. Remember in November.

The Mainebiz story is not

The Mainebiz story is not correct. The donation came from the Harold Pingree Fund--no relation to Congresswoman Pingree. Congresswoman Pingree was not involved in this project nor, as far as I know, was the Portland Press Herald.

It is a worthy cause, to be sure. But I agree with Scott--that would have be an odd partnership.

Speaking of Sen. Pingree, I

Speaking of Sen. Pingree, I got a recorded message from her office to participate in a phone town hall meeting tonight. Regretfully, I will not be sitting on my cell phone racking up the bill in hopes of a chance to say anything meaningful, which will inevitably be ignored anyway.

I suppose I should be grateful or something, but random selection is not always good luck.

'Harold' error sets a rumor mill in action
A reporter hears 'Harold Pingree,' thinks its 'Herald-Pingree', then Rep. Pingree's office corrects the goof.
By Matt Wickenheiser mwickenheiser@mainetoday.com

The never before heard of (and nonexistent) collaboration between the city's paper of record and a sitting congresswoman who is running for re-election raised a few eyebrows, particularly on the somewhat-right-of-center website As Maine Goes.

Site owner Scott K. Fish posted a blurb Wednesday, wondering whether it was a prudent collaboration. ...Pingree spokesman Willy Ritch posted a correction to As Maine Goes.

"I'm glad -- that's good news," said Fish on Thursday....

Scott: You didn't show the best part. The Press Herald incorrectly identified her as Sen Pingree in the sub-head, although the text correctly called her Rep.

Maine Media Mistakes of the Week
Submitted by Al Diamon on Fri, 07/23/2010 - 10:03am.

It’s the error that can’t seem to get completely corrected.

It began on July 20, when Mainebiz magazine published a story....

The news that the state’s largest daily newspaper and its incumbent 1st District congresswoman, a candidate for re-election in November, were jointly operating a charity caused considerable consternation. Posters on the As Maine Goes Web site speculated on the political implications and the likelihood of biased news coverage.

Pingree is a representative,

Pingree is a representative, not a senator.

And let's make sure that's as far as it ever goes.
