A letter to the Editor of the Boston Globe has been making the rounds through various blogs and e-mails. In the letter, a self-identified "progressive", math teacher Doug Van Gorder of Brockton, Mass says that, in his opinion, evacuating a school immediately at the start of an active shooter situation quote: “ rewards resourceful children who move to safety off-site more shrewdly and efficiently than others. Schools should level playing fields, not intrinsically reward those more resourceful.”

Van Gorder goes on further to argue against allowing potential victims from defending themselves by saying quote: "as a progressive, I would sooner lay my child to rest than succumb to the belief that the use of a gun for self-defense is somehow not in itself a gun crime."

This is so totally non-sensical that I can't begin to understand the thought processes going on in this man's head. This sure isn't the kind of person I'd want responsible for his students' safety in an emergency situation

If the man has children, they should be removed from the home for their safety. He should be restrained and medicated for his own safety. Every child he's ever interacted with should be subjected to lifetime monitoring for abberrant behavior.

He would rather the child die than defend the child? Yet another good argument for school vouchers and private school!
