Report from candidate forum in North Yarmouth
The seven GOP gubernatorial candidates took part in a lively forum Saturday evening (March 20) at the grange hall in North Yarmouth, moderated superbly by Tarren Bragdon. At least 200 people were in attendance (lured no doubt by the yummy bean supper.)
The best thing about an event that had a lot going for it was the terrific display of humor among the candidates. If you’re going to sit for two hours listening to what seven guys have to say, you appreciate a good laugh now and then.
I went into the event with no preferred candidate. I hadn’t seen them before and I was eager to see and hear them. They’re all impressive people and any one of them would be a vast improvement in the Blaine House.
I was most impressed by Steve Abbott and Matt Jacobson. Paul LePage has a compelling personal story, an outstanding record of accomplishment, and a no-fear approach to what’s ahead. He won the straw poll – in Cumberland County!
In the straw poll I chose Abbott. He opened with an impassioned statement about how disgusted he is with what the Dems are planning to do on health care tomorrow in the US House. He was able to relate that back to Maine and how Democrat regulations have destroyed health care and the business climate here. I found him sincere, endearing, and ready to do battle with the likes of the Maine Peoples Alliance and the SEIU, among others he specifically called out as pressure groups that hold sway in Augusta.
By the way, the biggest cheer of the night was for Dean Scontras when he was introduced. People really want to unseat Pingree.
