About 20 years ago, Robbie and Gil McKay from Northern Maine met Helen and Tom Gordon from the coast. Robbie founded Unorganized Territories United along with six ladies around her kitchen table when Angus King wanted to shut down all the schools in the Unorganized Territories (52% of Maine). The moms didn't want their kids bussed as much as 70 miles to school. As that effort progressed and research was done, they learned about the environmental industry and the whole rural cleansing initiative. They learned about the Northern Forest Initiative. The published the Unorganized Territories United Newsletter.
Meanwhile, down on the coast, the greens wanted to make the Gulf of Maine a "non-extractive marine reserve".That means no fishing, clamming lobstering - no nothing. Helen Gordon ran "Fishery Notes" and it was a popular newspaper about the Maine Coast. Robbie and Helen realized that the same groups who wanted to shut down the North Maine Woods wanted to shut down the Gulf of Maine. They combined their efforts and established a newspaper called All Maine Matters. All of Maine does matter and these were matters that pertained to all of Maine. They published hard hitting truthful expose's. The paper was supported by advertisers and became very popular. It was printed in Ellsworth and trucked to the parking lot of the Holiday Inn in Bangor. There about 20 volunteer route drivers took the paper to numerous outlets all ver Maine in less than 8 hours. The term "logistics" is seen on TV all the time today, but we had a fine tuned logistics system 20 years ago.
Advertisers were attacked and it began to cost them money. The paper became financially unsustainable. Management was handed off to another person and it continued for a while. It changed hands again wit the understanding that it would be given back if it could not be operated. Then the paper was sold and killed. We can't get it back. There was no provision to recover it in any bylaws. All Maine Matters was a citizen volunteer operation. I write all this down because the same thing could happen to AMG and the same people could ruin AMG unless there is a mechanism to ensure that AMG will continue essentially as it is. I would recommend a board of trustees to ensure that AMG continues. These would not be content police or day to day managers, just overseers to keep AMG from going over a cliff.
Again it is dependent on person or persons unknown at this point to contact Scott!
Everything else is possibly factual and correct,
To me there is only three things on the table.
1. An offer acceptable to the owner.
2. The offer being sufficient to facilitate AMG remaining as in and meeting owners' end goal.
3. It is reasonable IMO to say the owners desire beyond divesting himself of ownership is quite clear if one reads the original announcement.
A separate issue for continued discussion if we remain AMG we participate in, would be the obvious fact that there are those who do not
appreciate the existence of AMG, suspect it isn't only Dems.! Given history .
How many days are left? Is there an official deadline?
Please, someone, call or contact Scott. Find out what we need to know and contact those on the three threads who have said they'll help financially. I can help financialy a little, but I’ve worked on this a bit already and I don't have a lot of time. The private message APP on AMG might be of use.
Here is Scott’s email address.
I sure do hope that was posted with permission, AO. Something tells me the splinters of wooden spoon will be flying.
scott fish made his intentions for amg clear weeks ago right here: http://www.asmainegoes.com/content/skf-time-amg-say-goodbye-and-thank-you . he gives his email address and telephone number too. as i read scott fish's post he is saying he will consider offers to buy amg, but he is not interested in either giving it away or continuing to run it.
Taxfoe, Russ Belt explained where I got Scott's email and phone number.
It would be nice to know an asking amount; at the very least. Even real estate has an asking price. Negotiations come after that.
And as importantly, precisely what's for sale.
In the business world, such questions are called "due diligence".
" Ed Zackery " WHAT are we buying? What is the price?
If you want to admonish me for asking something that has already been answered; fine. Tell me where I can find the answer.
Furtherance of AMG is something I would invest in, even without a share of ownwership. ( AMG IS that important. )
You people expecting Scott to outline the terms of a sale on an open forum need to get real. Just stop. If you have a serious interest and the means to complete the deal You should discuss it with Scott directly. I hope this very thing is going on, this forum needs to be saved. I stand ready to help when called upon.
As regular visitors leave in anticipation of the shut-down, there is a lot of PM traffic as these anonymous people say farewell to each other and to those of us who are real. It could be the end of an era.
I made this on an earlier thread. Try www.freerepublic.com.
Type in the name of any Maine FReeper. I am larryjohnson. Click on the Maine flag and you find a discussion. It seems to me to be a simple follow up to AMG. You have to join and contributions are voluntary.
Soon my flag will be FLORIDA!!
Not sure if this link is my profile or the Maine page.
I was wrong of how to get to the Maine page. You first have to go to the forum then click on ANY posters name and then you find a space to type in a Mainer.

I, the same as you, am willing to finance but have no interest in operation or ownership. I have seen nothing from Scott asking for an offer to buy.
This thread has made me realize that some people have a cartoon idea of capitalism/property.
On the other hand my recent Q&A post made me realize lots here do understand these things. For those that don't own an organization, whether it be a business or something like AMG, I would plead with you to try imagine what it would feel like to be paying for your customers to host a discussion about how they're going to chop it up and run it in your absence, despite your having shown no sign of interest in such an approach.
I don't like it any more than you do but it's Scott's call. It's out of our control, seemingly. Using Scott's forum to tell him what to do isn't cool, even though I'm sure your intentions are good and you mean no offense.
My personal opinion is that someone with real money should put a few thousand dollars together and offer to buy the site for Naran. Everyone knows what that would mean. But for goodness sake, please be conservative when deciding what kind of conversations to air publicly.
It just isn't done, as the British would say. Maybe I am just an "old fashioned"... libertarian radical. I know people are accustomed to saying basically whatever you want here, but if AMG is going to end or if it isn't, let's have some decorum.
You know what I would like? For some of the old timers to recall their favorite AMG threads from the past and link to or bump them. Someone mentioned bear baiting?
Here's a good one, TPP. Somebody named apondsong wanted to enact a law that would prevent hunting dogs from going on private property without written permission. Of course, nobody can predict where a game animal will go when a hound picks up the scent. It took over 300 posts to explain this to apondsong before that person probably moved out of Maine.
Well said TPP. Although I do hope this isn't our final Thanksgiving for the AMG family, in reality, it looks/sounds like it could very well be. Best wishes to all for a healthy and Happy Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year!
Calvin: Scott entertains the possibility of a sale here: http://www.asmainegoes.com/content/skf-time-amg-say-goodbye-and-thank-you
I never said that I was interested in making an offer, as sadly, I lack the means. I have stated that I'd be interested in taking part in a larger effort to save this site. That could be a purchased membership, donation or some other form of financial commitment.
My post was a plea to stop the crazy attempts to negotiate a deal with no one on an open forum. Some of the posts I've seen here are well intentioned perhaps, but silly.
I agree on not trying to negotiate a deal in public, but many have offered to help either on the purchase or for ongoing operating costs. Possibly all the potential buyers don't need any financial support, but I gather one of those for whom many are rooting might appreciate it. Of course it may be that no one wants any "partners." Has anyone been privately contacted?
TANSTAF1 one option would be to throw together a private group hosted by Yahoo/Google etc. and invite anyone interested in a collective approach via a link in this thread. If someone had time to do it such a group could be used come up with a combined number that could be offered for the site.
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!overview <-- I'm not sure if Google Groups can be private though i think sohttp://groups.yahoo.com/
Is AMG at the hail mary stage to keep going?
"AMG will remain online perhaps through November. Thank you again. I look forward to seeing you up the road. Feel free to contact me at either firstname.lastname@example.org or 458-7185."
I'd say we're 4th and 30 on our own 2 yard line. Hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving with your loved ones. Keep safe.
How about this one?
Tanstaf1: My youngest is a BC grad and will be here later today. He'll appreciate that post!
