Sure, that counts, because the article you linked to doesn't include Ron's words "that I don't know if that's a fair assessment or not, but you wonder about using a cross like he is the only Christian or implying that subtly". That would have made his statement too wordy and less juicy.

I don't disagree with what he said, either, so why would I agree that he made a mistake? Huckabee is a statist. I'd hate to see him empowered to become something worse.

EDIT: not to mention, the article claims that Dr. Paul "lashed out"? Right... you could really see the sparks flying and hear the venom!

About Time!!!! You play with fire you get burned everytime. Huck started the fight by picking on Romney and then by setting himself up as the only true "Christian". Ron Paul said what needed to be said.

Yes, that is correct. But I did HEAR Paul's comments played on radio, which included the "cover my backside" response of "I don't know if that is a fair assessment or not...."

Perhaps a man of Rep. Paul's maturity and experience would have been better served to say, along with what I have suggested previously, something like:
"I haven't seen the ad, so I cannot make a fair assessment. Therefore, I'll hold my comments."

Someone who is in their eigth decade of life, and with as much political experience under his belt should know better.

As I said, we all make mistakes. This one of Paul's just happens to be a gratuitous slam against his own religion and that of countless others.

That quote isn't slamming Christians. It's slamming those would USE Christianity and Patriotism to strip us of our liberties. But that's just science fiction, right?

I agree, LMD. Paul went for the cheap hit on this one.

"I would never call so and so a fascist; we'll let the voters decide."

Almost a Clinton move.

But Catholic League president Bill Donahue said the former Arkansas governor went way beyond wishing people a joyous holiday.

He was especially disturbed by the cross-like image created by a white bookcase in the background of the ad, saying he believed it was a subliminal message.

"What he's trying to say to the evangelicals in western Iowa (is): I'm the real thing," Donahue said Tuesday on Fox News Channel's "Fox and Friends. "You know what, sell yourself on your issues, not on what your religion is."

Huckabee said the bookshelf is just a bookshelf and then shrugged the controversy off, joking: "I will confess this: If you play the spot backwards it says 'Paul is dead. Paul is dead.'"

Like I said, he will shrug it off and act like it wasnt on purpose, what a liar.

Well, I am feeling better.
The irritating snotty little remarks calling Huckabee supporters names and implying that we are all stupid was beginning to make me question myself. Maybe, I thought, these geniuses really can read people's minds and know what they "really" think and believe.
But then the media everyone loves to hate invented a cross in a TV ad. Everyone fell in line and did the obligatory finger-wagging thing and called Huckabee the worst kind of hypocrite. Even Ron Paul jumped on board the make-believe train to Hogwart or some other fantasy land. But at least they have shown themselves to be without serious thought so I can go back to feeling okay about making up my own mind.
What a strange trip.

Traci G,
Please re-read that entire thread to which you refer.
Note I do not support Mike Huckabee and said so.

I also noted that I am a born-again Christian woman who is married. I believe in the Biblical ideal of marriage between a man and woman; their roles of submission one to another and ultimately the most important submission, to God.

I hold no human or their ideals on a pedestal as you have suggested.

Just like in Rep. Ron Paul's and Mike Huckabee's life, in mine that position is reserved for Jesus Christ.

How about in yours?

I dont mix my politics with my religion...they should remain seperate. Somone ought to clue Huckabee in on that.

Yes, LMD.

I did think the Gooberbee ad was staged to highlight a "subliminal cross". And I think that is OK. Huckabee should be justly pleased with his faith, and his Christmas message is in keeping with the faith.

Paul blundered by talking when he should have kept mum, which is all too common on a campaign trail where everyone is egging you on to talk. He looked tired and worn down and was not very good on any of his answers. Why in the world would he intentionally alienate Huckabee supporters (when the guy is clearly not going to run the distance?)

That being said, I think the Sinclair Lewis quote is a good one. And I don't regard Lewis highly at all. But it is not a comment to be used on a campaign trail. The word "fascism" has too many pre-loaded messages. It's the kind of thing that sets libertarian hearts soaring. You know, red meat thrown out to Libertarian Party convention delegates. But not regular folks.

So, does that mean politics are more important than your "religion"?
Why should they remain separate?

I think Bob, to answer your difficult question, is that many people will feel excluded from politics if they don't share your exact brand of religion. I'm afraid Huckabee has reinforced this fear.

It makes me wonder how Bob Emrich, Gerald and Peter (the self-professed RINO), can all favor the same candidate. Strange days, indeed!

Ron Paul will be on Glenn Beck at 9pm tonight on the Headline News channel. Should be interesting, as Beck has said awful things about Dr. Paul and his supporters in the past. I don't think it will be the love-fest we saw on Mad Money last week.

I agree with what you are saying Traci. Huckabee is running for PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. We, as a people, are not united as a Christian brotherhood...we are united as a people who love our country. And hopefully, we are united in the wish to be civil to our fellow citizens and show maturity and civility in all we do. Christmas has absolutely NOTHING to do with it....and shame on him for using a specific time of year to condone actions that any wise person would reflect 24/7...or attempt to....no flaunting needed.

First he pulls the trick on Mitt Romney about his religion believing the devil to be Jesus' brother...then he says he's sorry (gag me..it's out there and he knew it). Now this ! What a slime bag !! He just lost any respect I had for him...and for awhile, he really had my attention. Not anymore...it's clear enough to me what his true character is.

LMD...you can't think he is above board ! ??? [/i]

No person watching the ad without the comments by the media would think that was a cross. Good grief, did he even look at the ad?

I agree with Bob. The cross story is the liberal media falling into conspiracy theory territory.

It is shameful that any Republican would fall as low.

And I am no Huckabee fan.

Race, gender, sexual orientation and/or religion, all part of human nature and modern day politics. If a candidate celebrates or is proud of any of the aforementioned and they won't judge or discriminate against others by their own attributes what is the big deal?

Who isn’t proud of their heritage, believes in their own religion, celebrates the attributes that they believe define themselves. If they don’t, I would not want them as the leader of my country.

So Huckabee defines himself as a Christian and celebrates it. Good for him. There are people who will identify with that and might just vote for him on that alone. That is not different than any other one issue voter. That’s their call and they have a right in this country to choose on a single issue.

To criticize a person, even a politician, because he celebrates his religion is the critics issue. This is all part of the modern day PC crap. Sorry if your offended by my or another persons religion and choice to be partially defined by it…well actually I’m not. Get a life, welcome to the human race and reality.

mike in maine you have touched on the very reason I do not like huckabee...I respect how mitt romney handled the issue of his faith, there is no evidence that he uses it to discrimiate against other people Mike Huckabee however accused an opponent of drinking a different kind of "jesus juice" than he did when it came to illegal immigration...therefore he has proven he can not differentiate between his obligation to the people, and his obligation to the Lord. I do not see that these two issues make good bed partners, and therefore religion should be left out of politics all together.

Traci,
I'm not a Huckabee fan and I'm with you right up to your conclusion. To ignore the fact that religion, race, sexual preference, gender influence politics is ideal at best, but not realistic.

I don’t at all support some of Huckabee’s comments, but admonish him for those, not the fact that he identifies himself with a religion. And if he wants to use that as part of his campaign so what. He risks alienating some while identifying with others. It’s a political gamble or a true conviction.

Mike: I couldn't care less how Hukabee celebrates his faith. I support his being able to celebrate and practice it 100%. But I do care when he assumes that I am of like-mind and addresses me in kind. That is either extreemly ignorant or extreemly arrogant of him. And to publically diss somebody elses faith while thinking he is presidential material...that's both ignorant AND arrogant.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with being PC. It has to do with ones maturity and wisdom as leader of the United States of America and her people of all denominations and religions ! Period.

After the two aforementioned actions of this man in my previous post, I have lost any respect for him that I had. I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him....Hucksterbee is more like it as far as I go.

I watched the replay of the cross segment at least half a dozen times and yes, it was a cross and yes, I believe it was deliberately done, but , so what, are we now going to ban the cross, or a persons use of the cross? What other religious symbals would you ban? As an atheist, I can see nothing wrong with this ad and as you all know, I am not a Huckabee fan. In fact, Just the opposite, I believe he is a liar.
