AUGUSTA, Maine — A Maine House candidate from Augusta is facing a criminal charge after allegedly encouraging 13 people to falsely claim they made personal contributions to qualify him for Maine Clean Election Act funding.

I fail to see the connection

I fail to see the connection between Hein and Ron Paul. Could you shed some light on the implied connection?

Hein is also a Republican, so should we condemn the Maine Gop for his actions?

How about Charlie Webster, should he share some blame?

Should Charlie Webster share the some blame?

To blame RP for Heins behaviour is ludicrous.

If a Romney supporter gets arrested for oui, is Romney to blame.

Bob, you shouldn't have asked

Bob, you shouldn't have asked for proof if you weren't prepared to face it.

Does it matter that he's an RP supporter? Not especially I suppose, unless you're making the point that most RP supporters rail against clean elections, and he not only took clean election money, but apparently broke the law while doing it.

Is it Ron Paul's fault he allegedly broke the law? Of course not, and I haven't seen anyone saying or even implying that it is, other than perhaps you. You really should try to control that knee...

.....

Michael Hein, 42, of Augusta, was summonsed on a charge of theft by deception after an investigation by the Maine Attorney General’s Office. Hein is accused of using his own money to meet the small donation threshold that would have allowed him to receive approximately $1,400 in Clean Elections for his primary campaign, and if he won that, another $3,900 for the general election...

I don't have a State Rep in

I don't have a State Rep in District 138 because he had to resign over his mishandling of Clean Election Funds. I don't know who he supported and I don't care because it has nothing to do with his actions. He is pending criminal charges. I don't know why he did what he is alleged to have done, but I'm certain it had nothing to do with whether he was a Paul, Romney, Gingrich, Santorum, et al supporter. Your implication Pat is petty and juvenile and something I might expect out of the Sussman Press Herald.

From press accounts, there

From press accounts, there seems to be a preponderance of strong evidence that favors the State’s case. If this guy had any brains and a small dose of humility, he’d bargain his plea for a few days in jail and a smaller fine.

But he doesn’t seem to possess either quality and, my gut tells me, he’s going to attempt to maintain his innocence and drag this out as long as he possibly can. He has a history and a reputation of playing the victim in situations where he was actually the instigator/aggressor.

On a different note, this incident highlights the need for more reform in Maine Clean Elections. Allowing candidates to purchase money orders and exchange them for cash contributions is an engraved invitation for fraud.

Is it true you could hire

Is it true you could hire someone to solicit donations, so you pay them $500 and they bring in 60 of the $5.00 donations? Using your own money (or maybe seed money)

AUGUSTA - ...snip

Hein did not appear in court but had an attorney enter the plea on his behalf. The attorney, David Geller of Waterville, also requested a jury trial, which moved the case to Superior Court.

Hein, a candidate in Augusta's House District 57, is charged with falsifying documents and using his own money to try to qualify for public campaign financing....

Maine's ethics commission... found that Hein falsified forms signifying that donors had given him $5 contributions...

From KEY LIGHT's other

From KEY LIGHT's other thread.

Key Light
On September 5, 2008, a woman filed a Complaint for Protection from Abuse against current Augusta House primary candidate Mike Hein in Portland District Court (Docket #1166). On November 7, 2008, after "full hearing on the merits of the complaint," the court found that "[the woman] was abused by [Mike Hein]" and that "[Mike Hein] presents a credible threat to the physical safety of the plaintiff/minor child(ren)." The court ordered Hein to stay away from the plaintiff and relinquish his firearms.

In the complaint, the woman wrote that Hein had threatened to use his gun to take her life and his own life, saying Hein "has repeatedly told me that if I attempt to leave him, he will kill me and then himself in a very specific manner. Yesterday he sent me an email saying things will end 'very, very badly' and that neither he nor I will survive a separation. He has said he has made peace with the actions he has to take."

The woman attested that "I am in immediate and present danger of abuse by the defendant, and I ask that the court issue a temporary order to protect me without prior notice to the defendant."
Food for thought for Augusta Republicans when they choose between Mike Hein and Andrew Worcester in this Tuesday's primary.

But did he ever support

But did he ever support Olympia Snowe ??

Was there ever a resolution to this matter sometime in the last 4 years?
