In Case You Missed It...
SEC OPENS FORMAL INVESTIGATION OF PINGREE FIANCE
Sussman Under Suspicion of Misleading Investors, Regulators
Congresswoman Chellie Pingree's fiancé and campaign funding benefactor S. Donald Sussman is being formally investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission, according to reports from Pensions & Investments and the New York Times.
Sussman owns 40% of a company that has tried to pass itself off as 'women-owned', according to the report. A judge in New York recently took issue with the ownership arrangement, and noted the structure of Sussman's role in the company may have been deliberately deceptive:
The arrangement with Mr. Sussman "may have been designed to mislead a number of observers, from the tax authorities to the S.E.C. to entities wishing to invest in women-owned businesses," Judge Richard J. Sullivan of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York wrote in an August ruling in the case.

Money manager lends jet to fly dying man to Maine
The Associated Press
Posted Nov. 17, 2010, at 11:05 a.m.
RAYMOND, Maine — (Sussman)... was the person who anonymously provided his private jet to fly a dying Kansas man to Maine to see his children.
...snip
The Portland Press Herald reported Wednesday that the donor was S. Donald Sussman, founder and chairman of Paloma Partners, an investment firm in Greenwich, Conn., that manages more than $1.7 billion in funds.

Golly - how astounding, that sometimes "anonymous" doesn't stay that way. Sussman's decision to give comments on his generosity couldn't possibly be connected to his growing notoriety and the public displeasure over his and Chellie's lavish lifestyle.
Right?
Apparently Charlie Webster believes that most Republicans in the state want him to continue to spread malicious lies about Sussman. The SEC investigation is only indirectly about Donald Sussman as the real target are the managers of a hedge fund that may have misstated Sussman’s investment in their firm to investors, or in filings with the SEC. Thus far nobody other than the Maine Republican Party has alleged that Sussman influenced what the managers said to their investors or reported to the SEC, although the SEC will likely investigate that. That’s not to say that Sussman shouldn't have informed regulators that the owners might have been misstating the character of his investment to investors, but we don't know that he didn't. However as a result of his investment, Jane Buchan developed what Sussman characterized as a "world-class" reputation and the SEC might consider that considering that men manage almost all the major hedge funds.
Yayoubetcha, Naran. Smells fishy to me. Anyone with a better recall of dates wanna opine on how the use of Sussman's jet as cited in the AP story - which btw originated in a Bill Nemitz mash note in this morning's PPH - coincided with the news about Chellie's highfalutin' travel habits?
Meantime, Politico is carrying a story about a confab of wealthy lefties that threw their reporter out. Guess who was among the luminaries in attendance (Hint: examine 5th paragraph).

I'd pay cash money to see you say that to Charlie's face.
What a great quote in the Politico story... "You can't come to us every two years for $10-$20 Million"
Good... Hopefully these liberal billionaires all go out of business.
If truly a humanitarian he will stop funding her leg. career and relieve us of the pain she creates in DC as a rep..
Sussman top donor in Maine politics
Rep. Chellie Pingree's fiance gave $1.3 million to Maine Democratic causes in 2010, reports show.
By Rebekah Metzler rmetzler@mainetoday.com
MaineToday Media State House Writer
AUGUSTA - S. Donald Sussman, the billionaire hedge fund manager engaged to Democratic U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree of Maine, was the top individual donor to Maine political causes in 2010, according to state campaign finance reports.
Sussman contributed about $1.3 million to causes championed by Maine Democrats in 2010.
Just imagine if the causes had been championed by Maine Republicans.
Pingree to serve on House Armed Services, Agriculture panels
The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — ... Pingree ... will be serving on the House Armed Services and Agriculture committees . ...
... Pingree’s second term on Armed Services, which will deal with issues such as defense spending and the war in Afghanistan. Her subcommittee assignments to Personnel and Seapower will deal with Navy shipbuilding jobs and other matters.
This will be Pingree’s first term serving on the Agriculture Committee. The appointment drew support from Russell Libby, president of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association.

I’ve examined all the statements in the release in search of the malicious lies with which LOBSTER charges Charlie Webster. I’m having difficulties.
Is LOBSTER saying Chellie isn’t a congresswoman or Selwyn’s finacée, and that Selwyn isn’t her funding benefactor?
Is he saying that Selwyn is not the subject of a formal investigation?
Is he claiming that S. Donald does not own 40% of the company under investigation.
Does he allege that Judge Sullivan never said that the arrangements with S. D. Sussman "may have been designed to mislead a number of observers, from the tax authorities to the S.E.C. to entities wishing to invest in women-owned businesses,"
Or is he claiming the Judge Richard J. Sullivan is not a member of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York ?
Does he have evidence that that the NYT and Pension & Investments links provided are malicious fabrications?
Is anyone able to help me out with this?

Backstory -- from a reader on the PPH site. The poster cited a news report on this issue (several days ago), which explained the following:
Thistle wrote:
The "bio-degradable" stuff ...mandated by.. Pelosi was so bio-degradable it was degrading as the person was using it. Soup spoons and bowls, after just a few seconds, started falling apart. Also, the costs involved in separating out the bio-degradables and recycle stuff drove up the costs of operating the cafeteria by millions of dollars.
Seems like the GOP is doing just as voters wanted. Rooting out stupid and costly activities done for political theater only.

Instead of wrangling the cutlery, perhaps Pingree could turn her laser-like attention to the massive quantity of petroleum products being used by the "family" jet(s). The emissions resulting from one luxury flight to DC from Maine would probably equal a year's worth of "pollution" from styrofoam soup bowls.
So grateful to know that our "representative" is concentrating on the really important issues, like the economy and jobs.
Don't like it, bring your own that would really be green not to mention saving the taxpayers money. Maybe she should have been focused on jobs instead of worrying about being green.
Good point. Why not a nice, embossed canteen set for each congressperson? The staff could pass them out during orientation. Lose the first set, pay $25 for another.
Easy! Simple! Amazing!

Now we are talking. Toss in a BPA Free water bottle and I think we are on to something.
I can't help thinking that the exact point where Scontras lost the election was when Chellie revealed that the jet was a Hybrid.
Maybe she should have been focused on jobs instead of worrying about being green.
But...but...but...what about green jobs???

Oil is driving Mainers to the brink
By Chellie Pingree
March 31, 2011 2:00 AM
...Maine families have yet again reached the breaking point with gas and oil prices. No one has had an easy time filling up their tanks in recent years, but our most recent oil crisis has made it unbearable for many.
.... Mainers work very hard for what they have, but what they have has gotten smaller and smaller because the oil they depend on ... has become so expensive. Just 15 years ago, heating oil used to be 4 percent of the family budget. Now it's 15, and it's only going up.

I do so appreciate the moaning and wailing from the completely insulated. So heart-warming, don't you find?
Why, at this very moment, I'm certain Ms. Pingree is doing her fair share to help our national fuel reserves, by putting the Sussman family jets into mothballs.
Let's not go down that road, Naran. I have it on the finest authority that the jet's a hybrid.
I'm sure you're right, Mike. In addition, reports say that all cashews and black truffles served onboard are hand-harvested by fair-trade crop owners, and served in biodegradable foam dishes that instantly evaporate, upon their contents being consumed.
I understand all that, but what I can't understand is how an engagement evaporates upon an election being consumated.
Easy -- the engagement ring was made of that biodegradable foam stuff. Once its purpose is served, it vanishes!

Pingree to support NPR funding
Says Congress should be focusing on more important issues*
March 17, 2011
For immediate release
Contact: Willy Ritch 207-841-8400
Congresswoman Chellie Pingree said today she plans to vote against a Republican effort to strip National Public Radio of all federal funding.
“This is an all-out attack on NPR and public radio programming in general,” Pingree said. “Not only would it strip NPR of all their federal funding, it would seriously limit the ability of all public radio stations to pay for programming of any kind.”
The bill being considered by the House today would strip NPR of all federal funding and prohibit all independent public radio stations from using federal funds to purchase programming.
“In Maine, MPBN provides an incredibly valuable service by bringing news and public affairs coverage to the entire state, including rural areas like Aroostook County and Downeast Maine,” Pingree said. “This bill would make it much harder for them and all the 900 public radio stations across the country to continue to provide this service.”
“I don’t know what the Republican leadership has against Prairie Home Companion, Car Talk and in-depth news coverage, but with rising gas prices and continued high unemployment, I honestly think there are far more important issues that they should be focusing on right now,” Pingree said.
