Good morning -

I welcome suggestions on how to cut down AMG's double posts. Here's what I do: If I think my post may have already been posted I click the Search link in the menu under the "As Maine Goes" logo at the top of every page - and I search for a keyword. Keywords I favor are the post's key subject (i.e. Woodcock, a town name, a business name).

If the story's already posted - I don't post again.

I also welcome suggestions on continuing threads. IMO threads with ongoing stories are most useful when all the updates/opinions are on one thread. Why? First, the thread is an automatic chronicling of events. Readers have only to go to one thread to get the whole story. Second, it cuts down on double- and triple postings.

If there's breaking news from an ongoing event that I want to draw attention to - I like to post the event on the existing thread. Then I may post a new thread with the breaking news, BUT with a link on that post directing readers to the same item on the existing thread.

Sometimes I think the double-posts are simply people posting too fast. Leaping before looking. Crossing before looking both ways.

Thank you.

A word of caution: "Search" searches only the body of the post, not the headlines on the Public Square page. Use Edit - Find (on this page) to search the headlines for a key word.

That's not true of the "Search" link on my post. You may be referring to the search engine in the upper right corner of The Public Square. That's a different animal.

The "Search" engine linked in my post offers this search criteria: Search topic title and message text.

I don't use the search engine in the upper right corner.

Thanks for making that point, Scott. One-stop search. Neat.

I think the double and triple posts are either when the site is a bit slow to respond (like right now) or we are click happy. I have started to open a second browser to verify if my first click has posted when it looks like it is hanging. Of course the times the post goes right away we usually don't have problems.

The double-postings I mean are those when, say, two people each start a thread on the same topic.

I still think that if we had a separate forum for the news dump, it would be easier to scan the page to see if an item is already posted.

Frankly, I have all but stopped coming to AMG during the week because my computer time is limited for awhile, and I don't want to have to plow through 3 or 4 pages (or more) to weed out the good stuff from the news I've already heard on my way to and from Bangor every day. :(

And then, by the time the weekend comes around, I have not been able to dig through everything.

So much for my tale of woe.

There's a "View Posts Since Last Visit" link on the Forum Index page:
http://www.asmainegoes.com/forum

That might save you time.

Is there a way to join them into one thread at the editorial level?

I know it would be a pain on your end Scott (and easier for us to modify our behavior -- yup, mea culpa!) but sometimes news hounds will sometimes see something happen at the same time and post within minutes of each other.....seeming to be blogging away almost simulataneously.

Michelle~ As offered many times before~ I will stop the ‘NEWS DUMP” if many or the editor wish me to do so. The stories

I ‘dumped’ recorded 6009 views looking at today’s viewed topics alone.

I am all eyes & eahs.

re: joining threads. Just by cutting-and-pasting. Once in a blue moon I'll do that, but it's faster for a poster to do a quick search than it is to cut-and-paste. I know that because I do both!

Paul - I personally appreciate all the time and work you put into the daily media updates on AMG. I know from experience how long that takes, and I thank you, once again, for the daily efforts you make on AMG.

I enjoy it as well Paul. AMG is like a one-stop-shopping place when it comes to important news and information. Thanks for creating it Scott.

Quotes - a reminder

I know it's tempting to use the "quote" button at the top of posts in order to reply, but quoting takes up needless bandwidth.

Please use the "post reply" button at the top or bottom of the page when replying, instead, unless the post you're replying to is on another page.

If you must use the quote feature, to keep something clear, please only quote that portion of the post that is necessary.

Thanks!
