SKF Subbing for Ric Tyler, 10/10-11, GHRT Show, WVOM-FM

AMG owner/editor Scott K Fish is substituting for the vacationing Ric Tyler with George Hale, Monday and Tuesday, Oct 10 and 11, 6 am to 9am, WVOM-FM 103.9/101.3. http://www.wvomfm.com/pages/2965571.php

As of this writing, no idea about the guest lineup. I will be on-air in my capacity as Citizen Fish.

Best,
skf

I'll be listening (and probably calling in), Scott! Do us proud. And try not to let George talk too much... it's just best that way.

Scott,
WVOM will have a conservative voice for 2 days. I hope you have the opportunity
to put Emily Cain in her place. Good luck Scott, I’ll be tuned in!

I find it bizarre that a station would use a flack for a politician as a guest host.

What would we say if a staffer for Michaud or Pingree were hosting a local talk show?

ps - we've been enduring Strimling on the radio and tv; I'd say turn-about is indeed "fair play."

Dan, have you ever listened

Dan, have you ever listened to 103.1? That, of course, would be Stephen King's liberal talk radio station. It's really a caricature of the liberal perspective. It's hilarious when conservatives call in with rational arguments and the only way the host can controvert is by screaming insults... hey, I guess if you can't debate with reasoned logic, be louder or hang up.

Naran: Strimling stopped his work on WGAN when he became a candidate, both for Congress and now for Mayor.

The problem with having a staffer as a guest host is that someone who is on a politician's payroll can't do anything but repeat the party line. Scott can't say on WVOM what he really thinks about what is happening in Augusta. He can't publicly disagree with his boss.

The promos are announcing him

The promos are announcing him as "Scott Fish, owner of As Maine Goes and -- um -- the State Senate."

I thought it was funny because he isn't really the owner of the State Senate. But I also note that even if they fix that promo, he is being touted as wearing two different hats, neither of which is "citizen," and one of which will prompt people to call asking questions he can't answer honestly.

Ric and George have always been good to me as a listener and occasional emailer to their show. They always write back with a quick email if for ever reason they do not use it on air.

WVOM is an alma mater. In 1998 Deb Plowman and I had a show on that station called "Fish & Plowman." I was also on air several times during the '98 Ice Storm when WVOM was one of the few radio stations standing; a literal lifeline to many in rural Maine during that time. That's when I first met Ric Tyler. I first met George Hale in 1994.

My current employment at the State House is but a blip in my 22-years in Maine politics. OF course I can answer questions honestly, even when the honest answer is, "I can't answer that question," or, "Contact me off-air." But that situation is true of plenty of radio hosts, guest hosts, and guests.

It is nice of Ric to have extended the invitation. (By the way, Sen. Deb Plowman is guest hosting on Thursday, Oct. 13.) If I can remember what a microphone looks like -- I'll do okay.

I worked both as a contractor and as a Emergency Responder during the Ice Storm. The only station worth listening to was WVOM. You guys were great. You really put WVOM on the Map. By the way, where's Charlie now?

I still hear Charlie's

I still hear Charlie's familiar voice doing commercials on WVII-7 in Bangor, ME.
Very nice man. Had the opportunity to do some 'volunteer' work with him for a short time during his stint on So Goes the Nation. Wish he was back doing radio.

The last I knew Charlie was

The last I knew Charlie was still in sales at WVII-TV Channel 7. Charlie is a great guy and one of Maine's best political minds. Everytime I see him I encourage him to get back into the political fray. He tells me - in so many words - he's thinking about it. But Charlie Horne was great on radio, he has an encyclopedic knowledge of Maine politics, and he is one heckuva political writer. Charlie has to do what Charlie has to do, but IMO, his absence from Maine politics is Maine's loss.

Um. I tried to send an IM to "." but no luck. Wanna re-check that?

You sounded great this morning, though. How do we get you on in that slot permanently?

Great job, Scott.

I cannot tell you how much I appreciated hearing you and George actually exchanging ideas instead of being all uncomfortable with the "chemistry" between Ric and George.

Again I ask, how do we get you in there permanently?

I also listened both days and I thought you did a great job showing that you were informed. I especially likes the catch you made on josh whoever the Dem operative when he was talking about Cain not having any political knowledge or experience and wasn't ready for prime time, You compared that to Obama being exactly the same. Was great and I was wondering if someone was going to pick up on that which left the ball in your court. Caught the whole lot of em off guard. Good catch !!!

Thank you for the thoughts.

Thank you for the thoughts. Overall I thought the shows went well. I always have afterthoughts of a few things I could have done different or better. George Hale and John Shields were great to work with. It was a very relaxed atmosphere.

I worked both days in what Ric Tyler refers to as "spacious Studio A." It is a good size room. I sat with this black computer monitor in front of me but never used it. Instead I used my laptop and a little yellow notepad. The in-studio guests sat in there with me.

Spacious Studio A at WVOM

I did have eye contact with John Shields - who made sure the show ran on time and also joined the conversation time-to-time. But George Hale and I could not see each other while we were on air. There is an upside to that arrangement: I had to listen. Normally I'm a good listener, so that was easy.

This was my view. George and John were behind the glass. John's face was always between the two computer monitors. George was seated to the left, out of view.
