SKF: Time for AMG to Say Goodbye and Thank You

AsMaineGoes Owner/Editor Scott K Fish can be reached by email - editor@asmainegoes.com - or by phone 207-458-7185

---------------

As Maine Goes, AMG, was launched in 1998 as an email newsletter. Not long after, AMG went online as a web forum with a mission to provide Maine conservatives a place to communicate in an online Pulbic Square. Soon AMG opened its doors to people of all political stripes. The only caveat was that conversations be kept civil.

AMG is a success beyond what I ever dreamed it would be.

Now it is time to shutter down AMG. Will it, like Frosty the Snowman, be back again someday? I don't know.

There are two main reasons for my decision. First is financial. AMG costs $150 a month to stay online. I don't earn $150 a month from AMG. Over the years several AMGers have been very kind and generous with their donations — often arriving just in time to drive the wolves from the door. I will always thank and remember them. They have a special place in my heart.

Second, since 2010 I agreed to step back from political postings on AMG as a term of employment. So I haven't spent much time on AMG since. And between 1998 and 2010 I spent most of my time on AMG. Running a successful web forum takes more time than most people realize.

Whatever strength AMG has had over the years — that's due to the community of AMGer's. Always a generous, smart, savvy, gutsy group. Thank you for all of your giving to and though AMG.

Finally, thank you a bazillion times over to Naran. Back in AMG's early days when I had to travel over the road before wifi was standard in hotels — Naran watched my back. And she has been watching my back ever since. Most people are surprised to learn that out of all the years Naran and I have known each other, worked together on AMG, we have only seen each other in person a total of one hour — maybe. Thoreau writes, "No extension of the legs can bring two minds closer together." In terms of Naran, me, and AMG - Thoreau was spot on.

AMG will remain online perhaps through November. Thank you again. I look forward to seeing you up the road. Feel free to contact me at either editor@asmainegoes.com or 458-7185.

Best,

There are some good, creative ideas on this thread. And I understand and appreciate the spirit in which they are given. I would consider selling AMG if one or more of the idea people on this thread want to make a go of it. If so, my contact info is in the opening post on this thread. That said, I came to my decision after years of considering options. And so as good and creative as are the ideas on this thread -- they are not for me.

Also, I am returning money donated to keep AMG online. Again, I understand and appreciate the spirit in which the money is donated, but I did not intend for my announcement to solicit money and, therefore, will not keep it. And it will be easier for me if donations to keep AMG afloat stop. Thank you for your understanding.

Best,
Scott K Fish

Hmmmm....this certainly

Hmmmm....this certainly catches me by surprise, and I'm not sure how to respond, when you come right down to it.

I rely on AMG for many things, most of all, 'news.' On the other hand, I probably spend too much time on it.

I'm now in my 70's, and have had to keep learning over and over that almost nothing lasts forever. Not favorite restaurants, stores, and obviously, friends, family members, and pets. So that factors in.

On the other hand, Facebook, Twitter, and other relatively useless ego stroking outlets (as this old guy sees it) have made untold numbers wealthy, and probably undermined our culture in innumerable and irreversible ways. At the very least, Scott should have become semi-wealthy with AMG, but he was too early in the mix.

More later...that's my 'from the hip' response.

I'll stop there, before I get in trouble, or get maudlin. At least for now.

Scott, thank you for your

Scott, thank you for your years of work on the AMG forum, and for the kind words of thanks to me.

I have been happy to do the daily maintenance work on AMG, because I believe so much in the support and furtherance of fiscal conservatism in Maine.

The common, every-day citizen deserves the real truth, unvarnished by expensive lobbyists and the glitz press teams hired by big political guns and the special interests in our state. Sadly, we can no longer depend upon the mainstream media for the truth about what's happening in Augusta, or in Maine.

AMG represents the grass-roots, unvarnished truth about Maine life, politics and economics. AMG is a Maine institution, and it simply cannot be allowed to die.

To that end, I will be seeking funding to keep the site online.

If any AMG members can help, please send me a PM.

Thanks,
Naran

Maybe viewing should be free,

Maybe viewing should be free, but posting should entail a cost? $5 or $10 a month. I can afford that. This is a fun place with much out of the ordinary to debate, and many insightful posts. There are probably a hundred people who post regularly. That's $500 to $1000 a month.

I'm feeling a lot like Mel, at a loss. I, too, have come to depend on AMG for news as well as opinions and reactions to current issues. Great advice can be found here and updates from around the state during times of severe weather, etc.

I would be willing to commit to a small monthly fee to remain a poster on AMG and wonder if others would also commit to a "membership fee" of sorts. It would not take that many $5 per month contributions to cover the $150. required. Perhaps if we paid on a quarterly basis it would make the Paypal bookkeeping easier.

Thoughts?

I'm in. I actually saw Naran

I'm in. I actually saw Naran briefly at the 2010 convention in Portland. Classy lady! No wooden spoon that day.

In the beginning, before AMG, Scott ran a bulletin board called "The Liar's Bench". I was one of the originals. That evolved into a blog by the same name. It became too big for the existing server and speeds were increasing. Scott and John Hathaway began AMG. I continued as an AMG member. Every time I bought a new computer I got reset and the calendar showed me as a "new member". I have enjoyed liberals, libertarians, progressives in all parties, RINOs and conservatives. It's a relief to see Naran step up to the plate. Many moderators have come and gone over the years. Some stayed a few weeks and some for a few years. Each of them were surprised at how much work it actually takes.

Like many others have said, I

Like many others have said, I depend heavily on AMG to find out what is going on around the state. Sometimes, as others do also, I post about something that has happened in my area of the state. Most of the time, in my experience, AMG has not only "beaten" the convential news, but lots more insight has come from an AMGer who was on the spot with up to date info.

The politics can get intense, especially when someone like Demnemisis gets going, like he has lately. Though he seems to have some problem understanding why many of us feel "disillusioned" by the supposedly "conservative" party, at times, he does a service by causing me to think more about my own position on the items of the day, and why I feel that way. Give and take is not a bad thing and the debate has been much more enjoyable, and polite, in the recent years, compared to when I first joined.

Naran, count me in for a monthly fee of whatever sort it takes to keep this going. If any other kind of help might be needed, even only on occasion, let us all know.

Scott, thanks for all you have done to keep this going, and putting up with some of us who must be "exasperating" at times. It has been a great time, very informative, and my main source of detailed news of Maine stuff, for nearly 9 years.

Well a good point at this

Well a good point at this point, would be to pony up 50 bucks to Scott for years of service being the best libertarian website of 1999 and now

I'm in

The best thing whether Scott continues AMG or not is that he deserves it, and more.

Scott! You once remarked

Scott! You once remarked that AMG was like a rooming house . .

Rather than distort it with my softening memory, if you have it, please repost it.

To that, I would add that this virtual rooming house sure sits on an interesting corner. It never ceases to amaze me now smart so many of your guests are and how much there is to learn from a room full of complete strangers. There was a number of years that I went 'read only' and read I did. Again, Scott once remarked that he was amazed by the places people logged in from . . lots of them were me (Percival, IA, tonight.)

As an 11 year, Maine expat, AMG sits near the top of my remaining Maine connections.

Count me in.

Scott, I met you once in the

Scott, I met you once in the State House. I was impressed then and I am impressed now by the quality and perspective with which this site has been operated. $1800.00 per year is nothing to sneeze at and I understand the need to make this a profitable endeavor. If shutting down is the answer then is the question of transferring the site to another operator out of the question? I do not believe Maine can afford to lose the information nor the posters here who so endeavor to dig out the truth wherever it is hidden. I hope that some means of saving AMG in one form or another is possible.

One idea would be to set up a Kickstarter with the purpose of funding the site, could be repeated on an *annual* basis. This would allow people to contribute based on their ability, maybe get a t-shirt back. And would end the problem of a perpetually underfunded site and ongoing fund raising battles... at least a year at a time.

As I read these comments, I'm struck by the fact that we need to remember that Scott owns AMG. It is an asset which belongs to him. Any attempts to keeping it running would mean a sale, a lease, a transfer of title formalizing a well thought out transaction. One doesn't just pick up someone else's asset and keep it running without some form of legal documentation and remuneration.

Freerepublic.com has quarterly fundraisers.

They have a goal, and a progress meter graphic. It's been done that way for many many years.

As a practical matter, you take that Donate button, put it up top center - put something in where the top ads are with a nice flash graphic countdown or something.

MaryAdams - It doesn't need to be that complicated. He can still own it, someone else could do all the work. He can keep ownership. If you're arguing that people can't just take it over without Scott agreeing to this, you're absolutely right.

A quarterly beg a thon for $500 would get the needed money quickly.

Thank you Scott for all you

Thank you Scott for all you do to bring us AMG and thanks to Naran for all the hard work.

AMG is an essential part of my daily pursuit to know whats going on around me. The prospect of losing it is almost unthinkable. I like the idea of an annual fundraiser with a set goal and a means to track progress toward that goal. Please consider this and don't let this be the end of a wonderful resource and a place that feels like home.

LOSS ? More like death. AMG

LOSS ? More like death. AMG is my home page. It is my stabilizer for sanity. Being in the midst of people that think the same gives one validity. We can't rely on the News for news.
We are at the beginning of the greatest train wreck in history I believe. A.C.A. also known as "Obamacare" and so many people don't even know it's the same thing. AMG is the biggest window in my life to see it happen around me.
Well, before I don't have the chance to say it here, let me say it now. ( and Scott will know from whence it comes )
"Thank you and goodby Fish."

A fundraiser progress chart

A fundraiser progress chart would be nice to look at. Sort of like a gas gauge, when it gets low, people tend to respond to fill it. Also, on other sites a little title of "sustaining member" is added under the user name to those who make a 5 dollar a month donation. There are ways.

SKF - First off, let me thank

SKF -

First off, let me thank you for providing that absolute shining example of what an Internet 'political forum' should be. Given the tons of crap websites and other website "political subforum" (eg. "Politics Forum" on a fishing website), I use AMG as the perfect model for how the discussion should be presented and moderated.

There will always be obnoxious voices and crazy posts, but the moderation of vulgar language along with a few posters who back up their words with references or experience (whether I agreed with them or not) went a long way for me to stick around and contribute what I could.

Thank you for being there for my first posts regarding my (awful) experience working for the State and how the Union steamrolled employess into "Fair Share".

Thank you for allowing the 2nd Amendment forum. I enjoyed being involved with that. I enjoyed being able to post my brand of political satire with my amateur photoshopping. Baldacci and Co certainly provided enough opportunities for material.

I will be sorry to AMG go. Even after moving to GA recently from Maine, I still lurk/post when I get the chance as part of my heart is still linked to Maine.

Thank you for the gem that has sparkled above and beyond the stinking pile of poo that can be Maine politics.
