Exact numbers are hard to pin down, but it's safe to say nobody's getting rich by being a member of the Maine Legislature. The notion that lawmakers go to Augusta to feed off the public trough is, when one looks at the actual dollars, absurd.
But the low pay should not be an excuse for the Legislature to neglect accountability when it comes to expense allowances for Maine senators and representatives. Unfortunately, such accountability is lacking.[/quote]
