FAIRFIELD -- The state Board of Pesticides Control agreed Friday to add a new Bt corn product to the list of genetically engineered seeds grown in Maine.

The state bows to Agri-business, again. The stuff is not safe to eat. Follow the money.

We've had some debates concerning GMO (genetically modified.... o.... something) crops around here, and the consensus seems to be "much ado about naught." Perhaps there's something I don't know.

ps - the folks who tried (in vain) to get the selectmen in Kennebunk and Arundel to ban GMO corn crops were promptly dubbed "The Children of the Corn," both for their eerie mannerisms in public, and for their apparent lack of a hair comb....

Are these seeds capable of germinating?

I would have no problem if you could decide to make your farm genetically engineered...but it is not an isolated thing...once it gets into the soil..is it?

I would suspect this is feed corn not sweet corn?

Haven't we been putting BT on crops for decades, granted it's a bit weird that they can engineer it right into the variety, but it is a brave new world is it not?

The Green Revolution has forestalled Malthus' warning of population growth and resultant starvation. Engineered crops and selective strains before actual engineering was possible has saved millions from starvation.

. . "much ado about naught." . . , concluded Naran.

CBS is reporting otherwise:

GM grass linked to Texas cattle deaths

"Preliminary tests revealed the Tifton 85 grass, which has been here for years, had suddenly started producing cyanide gas, poisoning the cattle."

Perhaps you missed the second part of my comment, above.

Thank you.

I didn't miss it. I isolated your assesment of the general concensus from your personal introspection.

So . . how about that grass?

. "much ado about naught." .

Same conclusion I came to.

Tifton 85 is a bermudagrass hybrid , not a gm engineered grass.

http://www.examiner.com/article/gmo-food-hybrid-poison-grass-that-kills-...

There are a few grass hybrids out there that do the same thing such as sorgo-sudangrass, which is used to produce cattle fodder. the planting instructions caution the user of the possible cyanide gas production if the grass is highly stressed such as would happen after a frost.
It is an excellent green manure crop for potatoes due to the cyanide gasses it produces when plowed down green, which will fumigate to kill certain soilborne pests and diseases.
Again, MSM reacts and the left eats it up.

Taxfoe - it appears you need a nice walk outside, to enjoy this delightful break between the rain last night, and the rain coming tomorrow.

Thank you.

From Ugenetoo's link: " . . because the only thing in this story that's been genetically modified are the facts."

Now that's funny! CBS should be out with a clarification, shortly . .
